Port-au-Prince.– Canadian Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier pledged $555 million in fresh aid to Haiti, as he wrapped up a three-day visit to the impoverished Caribbean nation.

The funds, to be paid over the next five years, were earmarked to help build roads, police precincts and implement social and economic programs in the Western Hemisphere's poorest country, Bernier told reporters.

"Compared to other donor countries, our assistance to Haiti is one of the biggest per capita contributions," he said.

"We are proud to be able to help Haiti because we have in Quebec a Haitian community that has brought so much to Canada," said Bernier, adding that Canada will act according to aid priorities set by Haitian authorities.

Despite other pledges of foreign aid since President Rene Preval took office in May 2006, Haiti's government has faced growing complaints about a lack of effective action to deal with the high cost of living and widespread unemployment.

"The hunger is unbearable and no one really seems to care," said Marcfel Joseph, a father of three who has been jobless since 2004.

"The government seems more inclined to please International Monetary Fund obligations than taking necessary measures to turn the situation around," he said.

"The government has failed to act and has proved to lack creativity in dealing with the problem," said legislator Isidor Mercier.

How long will we have to live on hand outs? Thank you Canada, I pray that at least a small part of what you are giving will actually go to those nice projects that are mentionned in the article.

Let's go Haiti. Handle your business and use the money wisely. Build and fund projects to benefit the mases in Haiti. Preval you have to do what's necessary to make sure the money used to benefit Haitians. Limit or prevent any corruption that this may attract. I'm glad Haiti received these funds.

i guess more countries like france and the united states should help haiti financially so they can improve and eventualy remove the burden of the dominican republic. the thing that bothers me the most is that the dominican republic has always been acused of been racist against haitians and the fact of the matter is that the dominican republic is the only country in the western hemisphere that helps the hatians the most given the fact that haitians are our nextdoor neighbours. thanks to the government of canada which is one of the greatest nation on earth for helping haiti with this amount of money.

They key word here is "pledge". The word "pledge" means promess. The United States said in the past they "pledge" 500 million to Haiti. Venezuela said that they "pledge" 100 million to Haiti. Canada has said the same in the past concerning Haiti. We pledge. We promess to give. But in reality, Haiti has not received money from any of the "pledging" countries. There are numerous "projects" for Haiti. If any money is given it would go to a private third party who would assure that the people in power do not steal the money. It is true that a lot of people in power in the past in Haiti were very selfish. They stole and built themselves mansions with international aid money. Nowadays, there are checks in place to prevent theft. No money has been given to Haiti for the past 5 years. What the Haitians need to do is to develop Tortuga island for toursim. Basic infrastructure should be built (roads, electricity, water). Then invite investors. See, www.ilelatortue.com.
