Miami.– A federal agency came to South Florida on Friday with a $170 million budget to find local groups to help them rebuild Haiti.

South Florida, home to the country's largest Haitian population, was the first of several stops the U.S. Agency for International Development plans to make. USAID sent $45 million in food aid to Haiti after riots broke out in April.

Friday's meeting, held at the Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, is the agency's first attempt since then to work with Haitians in the United States to create more self-sustaining economic development in Haiti.

"Emergency food is not what we want to talk about," said Jose Cardenas, acting administrator of USAID's Latin American and Caribbean bureau, at the forum. "We're promoting long-term growth so we don't have to lurch from crisis to crisis."

Why seek a consensus amoung the Floridian Haitians? Why not go directly to Haiti, where they can observe and direct the effects of the "aid monies" being put to use?
This is the main problem with all these "aid packages". They seek to help by using the same people who have caused and extended the problem to begin with. You give them money to solve their problem and they just squander it on "pet projects" that have already proven to be insufficient and inadequate
Set a series of objectives for each segment of the "aid" and look for the effects of that segment before releasing the next segment. Only by periodic allocation, defining the desired results of that allocation, and insisting that the objectives of the allocation be met can any "aid program" be effective. To do otherwise is to merely perpetuate and exacerbate the endemic corruption that always accompanies these programs.
Demand positive progress or cut them off and save money.

170 million is good but not enough to help rebuild Haiti. What Haiti needs is jobs and infrastructure. Create more sustainable jobs then your on the right track.

I have to agree with Blanco on this one, but i don't see Haiti giving up it's soverignity anytime soon to anyone. It's true $170 million wont fix Haiti, but it could , as some have said help fix key infrastructure such as a modern sewer system and clean drinking water availibility to all areas. The UN or NGO's could better asses where the money should be spent than Haitians-Americans who may not speak with a united voice.

A federal agency/ USAID $170 millions. Thats very nice, and Miami Little Haiti, had you been around there, they could used all the help they can and first rebuilt Little (MIAMI) Haiti. What this is about, is trying to find some leaderships or someone who will dare to rised up politically and assumed the role of a political leader. The ( agency ) don't trust the people in mainland Haiti, so they are looking in Little haiti to find someone that may be capable of crating some oppositions to the chaotic political situation that is taking place in Haiti. They know that if they make that proposal to Haiti there will be no guarrantee that anything can be done but here they can at least supervised the money and trained whomever comes forward to lead his people. The problem will then be the groups which are running Haiti at this time and they are armed and dangereous which is another reason as to why they won't go to Haiti. Have fun with it Little Haiti.
