Miami.– Hurricane Ike was downgraded to a category three storm in the Atlantic Ocean on Friday but remained a serious potential threat to the Caribbean and the United States, the US National Hurricane Center said.

With sustained winds of 205 kilometers (125 miles) per hour, the hurricane over the western Atlantic was now a category three on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale instead of a category four, but the center said Ike remained dangerous and was "still forecast to be a major hurricane in a couple of days.

"As of 0900 GMT, the eye of the hurricane was about 1,065 kilometers (660 miles) northeast of Grand Turk Island and was moving west at about 24 kilometers (15 miles) per hour, the NHC said.

please do not get a false sense of security when reading the word "downgraded", with Category 3 Ike is still a major hurricane with wind gusts up to 165 miles per hour that can easily rip apart anything if not properly nailed down.

Stay safe everyone, and lets hope Ike does not take a sudden trip to the south like Hanna did...

Cabarete webcam at http://www.cabaretewebcam.com should give a view of the ocean as Hurricane Ike passes north of the Dominican Republic..
Winds (light breeze) have begun to come from the north & waves are stronger than last night, though by far nothing out of the ordinary right now. Can see waves growing out near the reef (though not clearly on the webcam)

I'm pretty naive on this topic, but has Ike moved past DR? Was or is Punta Cana affected? And when is hurricane season truly over? Looking to visit for the first time...
