Kingston.– This month marks the 102nd anniversary of an earthquake that measured a relatively mild 6.5 on the Richter scale, but killed over 800 people in Kingston, Jamaica. The 1907 earthquake occurred on January 14 at 3:32 p.m. on a hot, cloudless Monday and its was preceded by the sound of a mighty wind and followed by the sound of a train roaring in a tunnel, The Gleaner newspaper recalls today.

The ground shook so violently that people and buildings were tossed about like puppets. In less than a minute, Kingston was flattened, with hundreds lying dead or dying buried beneath piles of rubble. Twenty minutes later, the devastation was exacerbated as fire engulfed the streets of Kingston and raged continuously for four days.

According to the newspaper, experts from the University of North Carolina and University of Texas in the United States (US) believe they have evidence of at least 10 significant tsunamis in the northern Caribbean since 1492.

All 10 have been triggered by earthquakes caused by friction along the boundary of the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates. This boundary, which lies along the north coast of Hispaniola, extends for 3,200 kilometers from Central America to the Lesser Antilles.

All earthquakes of 7.0 magnitude or greater on the Richter scale have the capability of creating a tsunami, and within the last 500 years, there have been at least 12 global earthquakes of such magnitude. The last major Caribbean tsunami took place in 1946 and killed about 100 people at Matanzas, near Nagua in the Dominican Republic.

Witnesses at the time in 1946 account for the giant waves about 5 stories high that were approaching the shores at great speed.
The aftermath devastation was terrible and all homes were leveled to the ground.
Huge fish were found dead inside land for several miles.
Nobody knows the real death toll at the time may have been larger.

There is a lot of seismic activity in the Caribbean although it hardly ever gets noticed outside of the affected areas. This is something that should have been addressed a long time ago.

yeah, the 1946 tsunami hit hard in my Home Town. The older folks still remember it, and tehre are HUGE bolders on the beach that feel from the coast line cliffs.

Isn't the DR part of the Atlantic tsunami-Warning network? I thought we were. Anyhow, I would think the beach-front properties on the northern-coast.

peace out...

My mother who was 11 years old always told us the story how she was on a horse that day she just has gone to buy some coffee and suddenly she start falling of the horse but she barely was barely hanging on to the mane of the horse. The horse was a very good horse named Zepelin
the horse swam across the camu rivever, she recount and can not believe how she made it home that day.
However besides the tetonics activities of the caribbean trench that is now visible with google earth the question is.who is researching all the ufo activity in the zone? back in august 1976 when I lived in Sosua our neighborgrs an dI saw the ufo going in the water and then 15 minutes later emerging out again. What are they doing down there? right infront of la puntilla.
My neighbors still live there in los charamicos close by the bermudez home they still remember.

Can you tell me the exact location of the UFO sighting please.
This would be great option for Dominicans that want to embark on a yola. Instead they could go to outer space!
What were you drinking or smoking when you saw he UFO? Or was it the cow dung mushrooms?

It really must have been a slow news day if a headline is about gloom and doom over matters one cannot control. Dominicans have more of a risk of being run over by a truck than being victim of a tsunami. Write about accident prevention, something humans can control,.

Baby, forgive me, I was just being facetious. No harm intended.
Let me apologize to you and nashvette both for being such a mean blabber mouth.
I will wash my computer hands with soap and water and slap them.
But really I would rather be in the comfort of a UFO than in a yola in the high seas.
Even though the aliens might do some mean experimenting on me. LOL.

This is to answer the enquiry of the gentleman generoso who obviously did not read completely what I have written.I specifically mentioned that the UFO or USO(unidentified summergible object) was right infront of la puntilla, well if you are not a native from Sosua you might not know the location,I lived and grew up right on the ocean front and I was 12 years old when that happened.for your information I have never even try drugs in my life nor have I been a drunkard I am a believer in the lord jesus christ I am a Christian.
However it would not hurt you to investigate things like for instance the history channel, discovery channel the internet the bible will tell you also about what giants did in the book of genesis chapter 6.I do lot of research and reading before I even dare to talk about something I do not have knowledge of.that I leave it to the ignorants

I did live in Sosua right in front of the ocean in Playa chiquita, maybe we were neighbors.
I did not have the opportunity to watch any UFO or USO sightings, and I do not doubt that they may exist either. Just that I haven't seen them, and I do sometimes indulge in spirits.
Regarding ancient literature and giants, and no offense intended, I choose to have different views on the matter, which may differ slightly from your beliefs, which I respect nevertheless.
I was once told the story of a man with the head of a fish that walked the beach at night, in front of my apartment but I never had the pleasure to meet him.
I am glad the person who bought my unit never saw him either!

When the sighting occured Playa chiquita was just a bunch of wild bushes the only house around there was the one own by an american attorney from ohio named Rod Russell, anything after was just jungle. The development of that area started on 1985-86 when Martin fernandez started the construction of the hotel Playa Chiquita,I know all this because he was a friend of mine.
So I do not know the tales about a fish creature but after all that island was raided by pirates and all kind of wars I have heard a lot of stuff myself about supernatural things overthere, even the history book that we use to have in the 4th grade tells how the aborigens were fighting with the spaniards and the virgen the mercedes show up and stop the battle and since then it's called "El Santo Cerro".Perhaps someone was drinking back then too.
The one in the yolas might need to worry more about the puerto rican chupacabras:-)

The development of Playa grande in Sosua started in the mid 70's when Carlos Bermudez had the idea to buy the pig farms in "los Charamicos" and build a resort there.
Development in playa chiquita came next after the cheese factory moved from there.
I remember Don Antonio Imbert throwing concussion grenades in the ocean to scare off the sharks that used to come attracted by the smell.
I used to spend a lot of time there as it was my favorite beach.
The Puerto Rican chupacabras is another myth that has never been proven, mostly used by grandmothers to tell tales to little children although lot's of adults believe in them.
