NEW YORK.- Dominican residents in the United States were again, the same as in 2000, excluded from being counted as a specific nationality in the 2010 census, which will begin within six months.
Promotional samples of the official form, already being distributed to community activists and organizations again reveal that Washington will not take Dominicans into account as it does with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans, despite promises in several meetings by several lawmakers –including senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Washington Heights representative Charles Rangel- to Dominican politicians at the start or this year in Upper Manhattan, that a box with the word "DOMINICAN" would figure.
The 10 question form has also been printed in Spanish, and includes specific nationalities with much lower numbers than the Dominican population in the U.S.
Box 8 of the form asks to specify “another Hispanic race" such Argentinean, Nicaraguan, Salvadoran, Spanish of Colombian.

Why does this matter? Its not like they are going to help the Dominican population more than others

Oh my God, what a tragedy, US has excluded Dominicans from being counted as a specific nationality!..Oh my God..we are so close minded and lambones.

It's unfortunate that once again we have been excluded. We are the second largest hispanic immigrant group only behind Mexicans. We are estimated as having a larger population than the Cuban community. We are the third largest hispanic group behind 1. Mexicans 2. Puerto Ricans. Dominicans are definitely making great progress in the U.S. and we will continue to do so. However, it's a blow not to add us to the CENSUS as we are an important contributed to the United States.

Perhaps. But we have surpassed the Cubans and that has been known for some time and yet the Cubans have their own category in the upcoming census. It's a clear indication of how Washington views our community.

NY and cibby. There are more Dominican illegals than Cubans. I think that this is why we don't get that spot yet

Xwii7,
I don't think that is the reason. We have a large legal community in the U.S. and a relatively small undocumented community when compared to many other nationalities. I think Ciby is right. After being promised by Politicans of our inclusion we received a smack in the face. I think its a clear indication on how Washington views our community.

With so many Dominicans getting deported for crimes and even the ball players cheating, I don't think we will ever get that spot anytime soon. They don't want to celebrate us

The LEGAL Dominicans here and their progeny have surpassed the Cubans already. Even without us having a specific space to indicate as much in the coming census said census will demonstrate as much regardless.

I couldn't vote for Rangel even if I wanted to...I live NOWHERE near his district and never have.

Can anyone explain me how this decision benefits Dominican Republic?
If DR is so concern about having our Diaspora counted in 2010 census, why don't we do it with our resources, how difficult is to run a census?
I hate DR's servility and flattery speech to the US.

"Can anyone explain me how this decision benefits Dominican Republic?"
It has nothing to do with Dominican Republic but everything to do with the Dominican and Dominican-American community in the states. The census is used by the government to formulate policies such as the allocation of resources and as such it is vital that everyone is well represented whenever a census is conducted.

The race selection is on the form because the US Govt is RACIST. They love to divide people with race division. Be happy Dominicans are not an option on the form. In this manner Dominicans will not be singled out in any manner. Good advice is to simply NOT answer the door and/or supply any information to the criminals whatsoever.

What is the big deal about this? Those persons of Dominican origin can list where they are from and the information will be taken in consideration for available govenment programs.
It's like showing up at a party and your name is not on the official guest list. However, you leave your name at the door and then let in, you still get the benefits of the party.
This is all a tempest in a teapot because some media type had to create a storyline.

Racism in the US? Maybe. Would you rather be black (like Haitian black) in the US or in the DR or Cuba? No racism over there. Just coincidence that wealthiest are also the whitest and the poorest are also the darkest.

BFD They should take the race and nationality boxes off the form they are are counting people living in the USA, should not matter where or what. just how many.
Should be no special programs by nationality anyway, Plus should not have the forms in Spanish,or any language other than english. I sure as hell cant find any in english here.
