Dajabón, Dominican Republic.- “We Dominicans have a responsibility to fulfill with the Haitians, the international community has a responsibility to fulfill with the Haitians and even more the Haitian people have a responsibility to fulfill with themselves,” said the priest Regino Martinez in a mass by the Jesuits to mark the 12th anniversary of Border Solidarity.

The Jesuit priest, in a mass held in the Dajabón’s Nuestra señora del Rosario church, said there are three topics which the Dominican Republic, the international community and the Haitian people must address positively to improve the situation for all.

The prelate, who’s also the director of the movement Border Solidarity, said there are Government officials who don’t even know the border and live and work in the capital “talking nonsense,” citing the case of National Border Council president Radhamés Batista, whom although is a native of a border town, left to live in the capital when he was very young.

Martinez regrets that “it took a visit from the likes of Jimmy Carter” to gauge the poverty and unhealthiness in which most of the Dominican-Haiti border’s inhabitants live under, because our officials fear leaving their air-conditioned offices in Santo Domingo and prefer to speak to the media contradicting reality. “It’s incredible that the ex president of the United States Carter and his wife have better eyes to penetrate into the deepest part of one of the poorest barrios of Dajabón for them to tell us.”

“We Dominicans have a responsibility to fulfill with the Haitians, the international community has a responsibility to fulfill with the Haitians and even more the Haitian people have a responsibility to fulfill with themselves,”

what is this supposed to mean? i find it funny when individuals think that they can order dominican around by saying that we have responsibilities when it is the people that come whenever they feel like it. things begin to be thrown on our lap like we have some sort of responsibility. im not saying that dominicans aren't responsible. all i am saying is we need to clarify the fact that it is corrupt dominicans in higher powers that are responsable.

"We" is a pretty all inclusive word, we as fellow humans? What I don't agree with is that we Dominicans have a "responsibility" to fulfill with the Haitians, "we" are each individually and collectively responsible for ourselves, in the pecking order. First we are responsible to our immediate families, then to our friends, fellow countrymen and neighbors, and then to the rest of the world.
In no way "we" Dominicans are responsible for the mess in Haiti, and the sooner the Haitians stop blaming others for their predicament, the sooner they will leave it behind and break the chains of poverty, that has coexisted with the Haitian nation, since its inception, and free themselves from this failed state of dependance and despair.

Generoso exactly we are not an ALL-INCLUSIVE resort. Good one.
DR has responsibility with its own people. This is getting ridiculous. These pro-Haitian, traitor ECT will not had seen the light of day in our country. Either self deported, exiled or would had done something outside DR but not spit their venom inside our country. had we have a true Dominican government who will look for the Dominican's people interest first. This is evil Jesuit when he talk is like our president is talking. Oh boy where had our lefty govt taking us. A long time ago I came to the conclusion LEFTY'S GOVT bad for third world country.

The Jesuits have lots of money
Carter and Clinton can request some sort of visa waiver from "brother" obama
France can increase its visa percentage from Haiti
Canada also

All of them talk and talk but do NOTHING for Haiti .Maybe they know you can win a Nobel Prize for "good intentions" these days.

Why aren't all the posters pressuring these rich groups and nations instead of focusing on DR?

Rubirosa,Jesuits are not priests ,they are just commies with a robe and a cross ...ever since Pope JPII they are out of favour in the Vatican to the point that JPII publicly chastised the Sandinista priests and pretty much ripped the Jesuit "liberation theology " out of the power structure.

The problem is that Haitians are praying to voodoo demons and unless those demons are exorcised from Haiti you will remain a cursed nation !

You cannot serve 2 masters and praying to God and at the same time praying to demons will not work.

BTW the Patroness of RD is not the Altagracia ,but I wouldn't expect Haitians and bad Dominicans to know this.
