Miami.– Haitian President Rene Preval and the secretary general of the
Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, are scheduled to
speak at a luncheon on a cruise ship at the Port of Miami on Saturday.
The
two leaders are being honored as "heroes of the hemisphere." The Pan
American Development Foundation is hosting the event. The foundation is
the disaster relief arm of the Organization of American States, or OAS.
The
PADF was created in 1962 and seeks public-private partnerships to
assist the least advantaged people in Latin America and the Caribbean,
according to the organizations website.

May I politely ask why ??? no sh?t is this a joke ?. I think he should be jailed for incompetence. Leonel perhaps should have been considered, he had brought his country back from the helm of bankruptcy and the only sitting president in DR history who tried hard to foster bond and good relation with Haiti.

Couldn't we just have waited a little, maybe until there is clear evidence of a measure of improvement in Haitian life, a functioning government, reforestation and influx of foreign investment?
I don't have anything against Haitian people or its gov. I just wanted this award to be somehow well justified, so that it has some real meaning and encourage some other leaders to pursue it in future. That's all.

Jesus Christ, are you kidding me? I'm usually one of the more mild-mannered people on here (haven't posted in a while) and this is absolute BS. Insulza has been completely ineffectual as OAS Sec Gen... In Honduras especially, his "diplomatic skills" has actually hurt the situation.
Renee Preval? Please. Nobody in the Haitian government, unfortunately, deserves the title of "Hero of the Hemisphere". Keep in mind, I'm for better treatment of Haitian immigrants (legal or illegal) than most Dominicans, but I'll tell you that the Dominican government has done more for the Haitian people in the last 10 years than the Haitian government has done in the last 200.

I don't know which report is accurate, but I just read somewhere that Preval said he was going to attend, but this article does not mention him at all as a recipient of this recognition.
In fact it sates that the 5 honorees are:

After they humiliate him in Washington and in Trinidad at the beginning of his term (he was an unknown who was preaching sovereignty), it is normal for him to be rewarded for having docily implemented the World Bank and the IMF destructive economic policy that has turned our country into an open sky poverty pit.

Now, he has a free hand to rig the upcoming Parliamentary elections from which he is going to have an absolute majority which will allow him to change the Constitution in order to offer himself the gift of a second term or maybe the presidency for life.

CAn someone tell me why this fool is getting this recognition. He haven't done sh&^^t but drink barbancourt all day. He is a friend of the Fam, last year I saw him, and ask him about the country what he plan to do, he's repsonse was the country should do something for me, about 2 Haitian carries two cellular phones and find money to put minutes, that must mean the country is doing good. I am not sure of what to make about the editor of this newspaper.I wonder is he or she is intelectually challenge as most of his readership seem to be.
