Santo Domingo. – The executive secretary of the Council on Dominicans Abroad - CONDEX- said the Constitution Revisory National Assembly’s decision to include Dominicans abroad in the country’s new Charter is a positive move.

Alejandro De los Santos said it’s an important step is a recognize president Leonel Fernandez’s vision to establish a direct relation between the Dominican State and its diaspora around the world.

The Cabinet-level minister said the decision to be applied in the few next years is an important step forward to recognize the influence of the Dominican communities abroad and their involvement in the country. “With this initiative the role our communities abroad are called to play is positively revalued, in these times of integration and globalization, where borders don’t exist and relations between citizens of one same country need a direct contact.”

The Condex official said Dominicans abroad are grateful to the Assembly’s lawmakers for supporting Fernandez’s initiative to establish legislators for the citizens who liver in other countries.

Well, this can be a good opportunity for dominicans to go beyond clientelist influences to support a political leader. However, given that clietelist ties are simply replicated abroad (see Pamala Graham's Excellent 1996 work on this), there's not too much hope for this as well.

Corruption starts at the top, and b/c our political leaders got to where they are at via clientelist efforts, then what hope do we have?

An illegitimate legislature, drafted a constitution that cuts back citizens rights... Until clientelism is defeated in the DR, we can't expect development or the standard of living to improve, despite all the metros & elevados the government builds.

What this means is that it will now be legal for an officeholder for any office to live abroad and collect the perks of office. Read between the Lines. :)

Baldoria & Josean,

I disagree with everything this legislature has done and stands for. However, I would stop short of calling them illegitimate, for they were elected by the people-even if the votes were bought with empty promises; in that case, maybe we got the government and legislature we deserve.

This is nothing but BS and idiots who support this are too caught up in the political embellishments. You people are idiots if you really think that this will leverage the Diaspora political power and say. It is only an instrument for those well connected to close the loops expand their corrupt little empire and become more powerful. Wake up people. Dominicans are idiots to believe that Dominicans(politicians) on the Island are doing this for the benefits of all. keep dreaming.
