PARIS. - President Leonel Fernandez revealed Wednesday that Colombia par Alvaro Uribe asked him to mediate in the conflict between Venezuela and Colombia, the second time in as many years.

Fernandez’s meeting with the Colombian chief executive occurred during the Latin American Summit, in Estoril, Portugal

The Head of State said Dominican Republic has been asked to mediate to solve regional conflicts in other opportunities, given its geographic position and friendly relations with its neighbors. “We maintain very close ties of friendship with Cuba, Venezuela, but also with Colombia, Panama, in short, with all the countries of the region, which has allowed us to play a role of mediation to solve the political and diplomatic conflicts which have surfaced in the region in different opportunities.”

LIE-onel Fernandez can’t mediate a decent salary for Dominican doctors and nurses but he has his Pinocchio Nose in Columbia’s and Venezuela’s business.

Good news for Guillermo Moreno Presidente 2012!

Bad news for Banistan's "concrete" oops I meant to say solid candidate St. James!

Margarita leads in the PLD

First Lady Margarita Cedeno received 28% of public preference for running on the PLD ticket in the Gallup-Hoy poll. The poll was conducted between 16 November and Sunday 22 November, and 1,200 people of voting age resident in 31 provinces and the National District were surveyed.
Other options for presidential candidate for the ruling PLD party were former Minister of the Presidency Danilo Medina, who has practically disappeared from the political scene after not supporting Fernandez's bid for re-election in 2008. Former Vice President Jaime David Fernandez received only 6.1% of the vote. His image has been tarnished by his support for the construction of a cement plant on the perimeter of Los Haitises National Park.

Vice President Rafael Alburquerque received a 2.6% preference and Interior & Police Minister Franklin Almeyda Rancier 1.2%. According to the Constitution, President Fernandez cannot run for re-election in 2012.
For the PRD, 62.1% say that party president and candidate, former minister of public works Miguel Vargas should run on the PRD ticket. Miguel Vargas was the runner-up candidate in the 2008 presidential election, losing to Fernandez.
Former district prosecutor Guillermo Moreno received 16.7% of the vote, while Eduardo Estrella, former candidate for the PRSC, received 11.4%.

"Presidente Moreno" has a nice ring to it!

First of all Leonel's true sympathies are with Hugo el loco Chavez so he really cannot mediate fairly and anyhow Chavez only listens to the voices in his head, but even he is not crazy enough to send his pot-bellied army against Colombia's crack troops.

If the Chabestia invades it will be the perfect opportunity to spray tyrannicide over Miraflores and get rid of the MicoComandante once and for all. Then let the Venezuelans handle the Castro Cubans in Venezuela.
The Reaction has just begun and the reds will start crying about the human rights they never respect and talking about DEMOCRACY and FREEDOM which the don't believe in ! The same cycle as the 60's and 70's but with probably more blood.

Wow ! what a joke.....as I see it LF hugging Hugo-a-go-go at every news photo opt anyone with common sense will see what side LF will take and defend.

If not does this mean Hugo-a-go-go will take all the homes to poor he promised ? something LF did not do or will not ever accomplish.

Ateo1992,
What else is new ?
Only now you have one current Prez. one pointing fingers at one past Prez. as if to not to take personal responsibility for his own non-actions and failed policy's, and to think we have 31/2 more years of this crap [real CHANGE 2012 election] . Yet, many Oh'Blama lovers will deny and will go though hurdles, hoops and loops to believe and defend his lies, stalls, failed economy, back scratching and failed leadership.
Have you and everybody else noticed how "Josean da Chosen, El loco lefty" has dodged me altogether !
Josey WHERE ARE YOU my brother, we have so much to talk and discuss on the latest issues.

Either way you put it, this is a great thing for the country. Even if LF is not in office another president can step in this position and continue these relations to carry them forwards. It is to the advantage of DR to keep close ties to its neighbors regardless of their political affiliation.

yes that is true .....We all must admit LF was the first president of the modern era .....The hippo was a stooge and an ignoramus

I think in the long term history will be kinder to Hippo and harsher to Leonel.

Leonel is selling the county out. He is no different than Uribe - he unofficially on the US payroll to erode his own nations sovereignty.

Columbia has just allowed the US to build bases on its territory. Is there any doubt that Leonel may allow the US to do the same in the DR.

Dominica,
I'm puzzled.
A lot of questions come mind, like.......
1. Can you help me out by informing me what good has come out of elbow rubbing with Hugo-ago-go ? [please not the obvious]
2. It's one thing opening up relations with fellow Latin American Country's but to what extent ?
3. Did we have sour / bad relations with Venezuela before ?
4. Could LF's support of Honduras be a step LF would like to follow and be supported ?
5. Could the Socialist of Latin America Country's be trying to unify and establish a "United Socialist States of South America" ?
6. Could LF be selling out the DR's neutrality by playing the middle Man ?
Only history can be a judge of this, meanwhile I'm reminded of four old saying "Keep your friends close and your enemy's closer"..."Don't get upset when your pet snake bits you, after all he's a snake by nature"..."What sounds good today may sound terrible tomorrow" and one of my favorites "I told you so".
GOD, I hope I'm wrong.
Take ca

Another classic rectal statement from Banistan!

As he swings back to LIE-onel Fernandez, since his "sure to win hero" St. James has self-destructed!

Banistan care to retract your statement:

Borrowing big in 2010

The Ministry of Hacienda will be contracting loans with international commercial banks for US$1.272 million in 2010. According to the 2010 National Budget sent by the Presidency to Congress, 14 loans need to be approved, 13 of which will finance infrastructure works and one would be used to equip the Border Control Force (Cesfront).
The new loans are:
Guaigui dam: US$70 million (INDRHI). Hermanas Mirabal aqueduct: US$50 million (INAPA). Nagua aqueduct: US$20 million (INAPA). Moca aqueduct: US$40 million (INAPA). Peravia aqueduct: U$110 million (INAPA). Puerto Plata aqueduct: US$100 million (INAPA). Santiago aqueduct: US$29 million (INAPA). Pinalito hydroelectric Dam: US$155 million (CDEEE). Las Placetas hydroelectric dam: US$98 million (CDEEE). Duarte Corridor: US$67 million (SEOPC). Viadom Samana highway:

US$400 million (SEOPC). Low-income housing: US$90 million + US$80 million (INVI). Border security equipment: US$12.8 million.
Clave newspaper reporter Edwin Ruiz, nevertheless, points out that the international banking loans are a horn of plenty for the government, supplying an endless source of funds tied to contracting works and goods and services, often contracted without tenders.
The cost of these loans that would be negotiated for 7-year terms, with a 2-year grace period, is Libor plus "a margin compatible with the interest rate in effect for the DR." This plus the payment of commissions according to market.
Clave reports that in 2008, the Ministry of Hacienda reports having taken on US$686.9 million in new debts.
Clave reports that taking on international loans during the Hipolito Mejia government (2000-2004) was widely criticized by members of the ruling PLD when in opposition.

Mejia's government borrowed with the Deutsch Bank, Sociedad Anonima Espanola and the Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria for similar terms, and without tenders. The newspaper says that that practice led the foreign debt with private senders to increase from a share of 19% of foreign loan borrowing to 35%, or 226% more foreign debt, to US$2,256.5 million.
Interestingly, the newspaper quotes a leonelfernandez.com campaign page where Fernandez, who is into his second term, apparently criticizes this debt taking and the burden on the national budget. But instead of correcting the practice, his administration takes it a step further and announces new plans to issue sovereign bonds for US$600 million in 2010, and then for US$500 million in 2011 and 2012.

Sourcre DR!

The country cannot be mediator because it has no voice, no power. Our GDP has to be bigger and we need a super arm forces in order to be heard. The DR is not even mentioned in major newspapers. All the greatness can be acquired with education. Increase the funding to education in order to increase our GDP and influence other countries.
