New York.- Dominican community activist Julissa Ferreras is leading in the Queens District 21 voter preference in the special elections slated to fill the post left vacant by the now state senator Hiram Monserrate.

Ferreras, who has a long record of community efforts to benefit Hispanics and other minorities, will compete against two other democratic candidates; Francisco Moya, who reportedly has the support of the Democratic Party’s machinery and the Puerto Rican Nydia Velázquez.

Also running for the same seat is the African American George R. Dixon.

Hello, all-

Allow me a correction: she WON. The election was yesterday. I was there, as a volunteer. Though that community is deeply divided by nationalistic lines (if not animosities), she came through like a champion. It's surprising how the Latino, Dominican and Female-sensitive media haven't celebrated this extremely difficult achievement by this young woman in an all-male Queens political machine, in an election sullied by low mud-slinging (by her opponents)... and still she won.

Here are some of the links to the news coverage:

Oh, another interesting fact about her victory:

Due to term-limits in NYC, reaching a second term would make her senior-most member of the council, which lines her up to become Speaker of the New York City Council, people. This is BIG news for the Dominican/ Dominican-American community---the equivalent of being president of the chamber of deputies--a position, which in NY politics is truly agenda-setting.
