NEW YORK.- The Dominican community leader Julissa Ferreras was voted a New York City Council member on Tuesday, in a special election for three vacant districts, two in Queens and one from Staten Island, newspaper Daily News reports.

Ferreras won in the 21st Council District and Eric Ulrich won in the 32nd Council District in Queens. Ken Mitchell won in the 49th Council District on Staten Island.

The winners of the nonpartisan special election will serve through the end of the year. They will have to run again in their parties' primaries on Sept. 8 and in the general election on Nov. 3.

Four candidates were running in the 21st Council District in western Queens, which includes the neighborhoods of Corona, East Elmhurst and parts of Jackson Heights and Elmhurst.

Daily News said with 100 percent of precincts reporting, Julissa Ferreras won with 46 percent of the vote, and Francisco Moya had 25 percent.

They were running to succeed Hiram Monserrate, who won election to the state Senate.

A Dominican Today source said Ferreras is well known in northwest Queens and her father has also been active in politics in the sections Corona and Jackson Heights.

Congrats! Show them that Dominicans can be great leaders too. Use your influence in NY to put great pressure on the RD Gov and trade with the city of NY.

And she is cute too!

The thing i could said about Dominicans now is that they are changing they ways at least in outside of dr and a lot of them are engaging in progress for themselves and their communities. Many reasons is because the drugs business is no longer fruitful in usa and the consequence is very dreadful and so change need to happen. Every time there is a change of tactic there is always chance of success. Now a lot of Dominicans here in the usa are getting educate and changing in every way. it is a good thing. Again I said those that leave outside of dr.

It would be nice if contributors to this forum would refrain from engaging in personal attacks. Do we think that only the erudite has the right to express his views in public? When we resort to belitling others, we become Lilliputians ourselves.
