Port-au-Prince.– At least 259 people were reported injured in the concluding hours of Haiti's Carnival 2009, bringing the total casualties in the festivity to one death and 540 injuries, local police said.

The sole fatality was identified as 15-year-old Sandra Pierre, who suffered several fractures in the skull after a gigantic carriage rolled over upon her during a street concert in Port-au-Prince, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

According to official statistics, around one million local residents participated in this year's Carnival, which began last Sunday. In order to guarantee social order and security, Haitian police had sought the cooperation of the Red Cross and UN peacekeeping forces, Gary Desrosiers, Haitian police spokesman told reporters.

Olsen Jan Julien, Haitian minister of culture and communication, said that Carnival celebrations help create employment and consumption in sectors like tourism and transportation, which implies considerable economic profitability to the Caribbean country.

DT, I'm curious. Why report about Haiti's carnival here? Why should these people care? I see an agenda.

...Or maybe, it's me!

With all due respect, I'm Haitian and I do not see this as news that must be printed on a Dominican-themed site.

How in hell can 570 be injured?

kmnupe,

Don't be so sensitive man DT reports news from other countries.Carnivals are to feel good and happy and i can see 10 killed and 540 injured and something to put light on.Lots of Haitians visit this site too.so if your neighboor kill his kids would't you call the police.I would do it without thinking.Hiding the problems won't make them go away.

Actually my point was not about what happened during Carnival as much as relevance to topics discussed here.

If all the Haitian bands were going to DR this week-end for carnival , that would be something to think about (LOL). Also, if Dominicans went to Haiti in droves to party, it would make sense

It's no paranoia or such on my part. Good day all. Carry on!

kmnupe,

Actually my concern was not what happened during Carnival as much as relavence to topics discussed here.

You as a Haitian may nt want to put another statement like that.If something like this would had happened in the Dominican Carnaval that sure won't be a dominicans reaction to it.If this happened in DR i would appreciate to see it in every headline on this planet.

I agree with KMNUPE... just because the newspaper is DT doesn't mean they should only report what happens in DR. many newspapers report things that happen around the world..

I believe that just by the comments on this thread the newspaper accomplished its goal of opening up dialog amongst its readers.. good or bad.. communication is key...

good job guys!

Wait a minute, why am I a bad guy in this?

ETIENNE, I don't understand your comment. I'm not sure if it's an attempt to insult me, but, I've always been civil to you.

BELLY,

I'm not saying that what happened in Carnival does not concern me. But. let's look at it further. What happened? What caused the injuries? What kind of injuries? Who got injured? Were they shot? Did they fall? Was is assaults? police brutality? Stampede? Was it PAP? Jacmel? Cap-Haitien? St. Marc?

If this is worthy news and an interest outside of Haiti, I stand corrected.

Like I said before, Carry on!

DO4SELF,,

I've posted here often enough in the past. Diversity of news is good. Some are relevant, others not.
There's been tension on this site because some Haitians come here to start trouble and some Dominicans here are bigots.

Constant news about Haiti does not help. Nothing malicious about my sentiments. Just the way I see it.

That's fine KMNUPE.. I am new to this paper and was curious to see the interactions of the readers on the threads..

as for tension between Haitians and Dominicans... that exists on and off line... Sad to see it though... I hate racism of any kind...especially amongst Dominicans... I experience it all the time.. when people see me they think I am African American, Panamenian, Guyanese or Trinidadian... never Dominican... which for the most part is fine by me.. until they cross the line....

I say .. why not pray for those who are so blinded by their shortcomings, or feel the need to insight arguements instead of promote dialog...

I choose to think positive... but that's just me.. lol

kmnupe,
We are all entitled to our opinions and i respect that. But we live in a global village where all kinds of news go around the world in minutes. Did you watch TV today where a puppy was rescued after its owner left it on the highway in the U.S.?I believe that the more we know about each other, the more chances we have to learn how to live together. Any news about the DR is of interest to Haiti and vice versa, specially when human beings are involved. LA VERITE.

Thats sounds like Ex-President Bush type of statements.Thats something local authorities have to find out but is the resposability of the locals to make sure they do.In San Fracisco where i'm from there would have been a huge strike already(with me on front lines).

Now let me respond to kmnupe.
kmnupe I notice that your nickname starts with 3 consonants.(kmn)upe
In artculatory phonetics a consonant is a speech sound that is articulated with complete or partial closure of the upper vocal tact..
Therefore a diagrah like KMN in kmnkupe has more than a consonant which makes it very hard to pronounce your nickname.
Only a genius will compose a nick name so difficult to articulate
Only a genius is able to decipher this code name " do4self69 "
Great job genius !

kmnupe if we display our intellect all the time in this forum we will be so boring.
My teacher asked me once why you are telling jokes in the classroom instead of doing your homework , I said :Teacher I am already done. ( guess what I am trying to say ,i dare you) ah ! ah ! ah ! ah !

I think it will be a good thing if both sides of the island enter into a cultural exchange during carnival. Carnival time in Haiti is the time when all social barrier drops and everyone has a good time.

Haitian carnival just ended a few days ago. Watch the video below:

To: etiennc, Haitians eat mud cake because they are so proud of their land that they gained through bloody battles. They proudly eat a piece of their land as a ritual to show their love and affection for the land of our ancestors: Bookman, Toussaint Louverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, etc...

Haitian 1804 is not completely cured as you told me.
Haitian 1804 , no sir you are so wrong ,if they had loved their country so much they should have
stopped chopping down the trees to make charcoal.
This is why there is not any vegetation just the naked land.

Hmmmm....Jean-Jacques Dessalines....isn't that the guy who invaded, ransacked and burned Monte Plata, Cotui and La Vega and then moved onto Moca and Santiago de los Caballeros and murdered the entire population? What a guy to dedicate mud cakes to. Well, at least you didn't say they are consumend in honor of, oh say Jean-Pierre Boyer.
