All the crying over Abu Graib and not an utterance of out rage at the constant beheadings and "real" torture perpetrated by our foes on a daily basis. When DR deports the illegal Haitian, international human rights agencies intervene and cry "RACISM." When the U.S. does it, you can't find a response from international human rights agencies. TB, you're the definition of one-sided history. Go read a few Dependency Theory, then we can talk. You're proposing that the US has not benefited from "southern" countries - why then does it invest in FTZs? why then do they want to weaken trade barriers that inhibit the development of high-value-added industries? Many scholars hold that the US's trade policies and historic foreign policies create the conditions that cause for mass migrations...
From: United States, Washington, D.C.
For example, the link between the labor exporting countries and their "former" colonial masters - and yes, the US fits this mold for the Caribbean basin (Cuba, DR, Haiti, PR, & Central Am), just look at all the military interventions - are those historical bonds by which the former master used migration policies to maintain the status quo in its colonies. In the DR this meant "exiling" potential radicals during the 1960s and 70s, to ensure a stable pro-US Dominican government.
Additionally, just try to imagine the US w/o migrants to take care of the menial jobs. In short, the US has benefited and still benefits from "southern" countries and migrants, even the undocumented ones.

Like all governments, they make and have made decisions which conform with their foreign and domestic policies.
While I might not agree with all of the actions taken, I do reamain faithful to the overall intent of those actions, which is basically, do the least harm.
Additionally, I must vehemently disagree with you about US policy being the cause of the mass migrations from Latin America to the US and elsewhere. These migrations have been the result of gross government mismanagement of thesociety from which the migrations have occured. Also, I fail to see where severly cutting import duties on goods entering the US have had an adverse effect on local economies; especially when those governments have not cut thier own import duties on incoming US products. You accuse mewf re-writing history. It seems to me that by your own words you have attemptedto do the same.

As to the US fitting the "mold you describe, realative to being a "Colonial Power", I think you have been reading the wrong history books. t least those that describe the current status of US Territories; ie., Puerto Rico and The US Virgin Islands are the only places which have any connection with the US. The PR comes under the Congress of the US for certain financial matters and I'm not real sure about theVirgin Islands. Most certainly, theUS has not ever treated either place as a "colonial possession" by any definition of that condition. The PR has theprerrogative of electing to become a State, remain in their present status, or become independent at any time they wish. Is that Colonialism??? I think not, so you're really barking up the wrong tree and trying to make something true by mis-stating the circumstances when it isn't so at all. I really hate it when people do that.

As to militaray interventions, none have ever taken place, except ot physically reinforce existing policy regarding US interests. Panama, Grenada, Honduras/Nicaraugua and the DR have been ones that come immediately to mind. Haiti was at the request of the UN along with other nations, so don't point fingers at that occasion, it's not significant regardless of what you may think. Grenada was occupied by Cubans with the intent of taking over that island, Panama is self explanatory and with the agreement of the Panamanian people (Noreiga was a Drug Lord who needed to be replaced), H/N was an effort to surpess Laftist guerillas and I'm not sure it was successful. Oh yeah, I forgot about the Bay of Pigs Fiasco and aborted effort to oust Castro.
I'm sure you're familiar with the rightwing government of the times mentioned. Communism was and still is a dirty word in the US. It was a threat to the way of life we had then. I'm not so sure of the present.

Why should the U.S. be responsible for taking in everyone from poor countries? If that was the case the entire nation would crumble. It's the same for the Haitians being in DR. If you didn't come in legally you should expect to be deported. I think we all feel for the people of Haiti but laws need to be followed and abided by. Let's ask ourselves why Haiti was once the most prosperous colony in the caribbean but no longer are. Where is sense of responsibility? They have proven that they have no respect for the laws of that country, so why should they be accepted? Just because they are already in place? No Thank you, my friend, because that is not the way citizens think in the USA.

TexasBill
"I have a dream"!!!
And yes the U.S. government is full of hypocrites. If they don't want illegal immigrants they should mind their business about DR deporting.
You're either American, or you aren't!!
in spiting nasty narratives. But it is about debading serious issues wher the intellect are needed
you retire into your obscure hole.
You play dead and we have to beg you to come out.
But as soon the issue is about cursing the Haitians they can see in front carrying the fear and hate flag
What this isall about is a group, any group, who have the audacity to assume they have the right to illegally enter any country then demand that that country accept them becausethey are already there.
They have proven that they have no respect for the laws of that country, so why should they be accepted? Just because they are already in place? No Thank you, my friend, because that is not the way citizens think in the USA.
You can screan, whoop & holler all you want to, but in thefinal analysis what your dealing with is a bunch of scumbags demanding something just because they want it. Stealing from their neighbor is no different from what they are doing by demanding acceptance without going through the PROPER LEGAL PROCESS.
You think by making enough noise about "HUMAN RIGHTS" will do the trick? Not in my book it won't. Maybe the ultra liberal segment of do-gooders will accept this but not me andI'll fight it to the bitter end.
TexasBill
I'll leave it up to the Dominicans to solve their own problems, if they can.

"
How are you going to fight that TexasBill ? some posters may consider joining you in that journey. Do you care to share?.
It's funny the USA want to deport 30,000 Haitians in the other hand hell break loose if DR attempt to do the same thing, how do you explain such a contradiction ? what ever happened to countries that lead on what they preach.
"Shark is the only fish that gets a bad name from all the fishes that kill people in the sea"
One dau you will know how many Mexicans Colombians Venezualans that enter the domincan Republic illegally
I give you one more day and you will stop posting your long diatribes, You will be suffering from BS fatigue Your hand will get tired from this excersise in futily.
You will stop posting comments when you realize that LEonel Fernadez , the Dominicans politicians , the eline and the majority of dominicans do not read your posts and coul not care less what you think.
He is 100% American and can tell who is full of it, even foreigners not related to either country can
tell how futile, dumbass and annoying can be dealing with the Haitian tiresome agenda with the
BS human rights, racism, victim role that Haitians enjoy to play against Dominicans.
You can give me ONE MORE DAY and I'll take it. Then you will have to give me ONE MORE DAY again and again, which I'll take regardless of whether you give me any others or not!
The PRIMARY PROBLEM lies in the acceptanace by people such as yourself of things the fovernment does without even trying to do anything about it.
All the Huelgas that take place area over small things that don't seem to affect anyone but those who are doing the protesting. BUT, let me tell you THIS: If you scream loud enough and long enough, your voicewill be heard! That is if you REALLY GIVE A DAMN about your country and what is taking place undear your very nose.
Problem is, you really don't give a damn, so you get just exactly what you vote for andask for. NOTHING that will help those who really need the help.
This government runs the numbers on projects to their satisfaction, then publishes these falxe numbers for public consumption without checking their accuracy.

The latest is that the numbers projected for Metro usage have been mised by 50%. Of the 175,,, people to use the Metro, there have been only 60,000 +- to actually use that facility. How about them apples, you winp?
You might check on other things the government has been telling you ,while you're at it, and uncover all the lies you're being fed over the years.
Since this thread is about ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION in the US, I don't hesitate ONE SECOND to voice my utter disgust about what is being rammed down the throats of the American People by a bunch of corrupt, egotistical, and self-centered Legislators in Washington and the organizations who are backing the so-called "COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM:.
Whaat is needed by all, including theDR, is a CONCENTRATION ON ENFORCING EXISTING LAWS already on the books in both countries.
If you don't agree with me, then so be it, I'll still fight the bastards anyway I can.
TexasBill
Great post!!!!
I think it's wise to stay away from any argument involving both countries, since your track record speak for itself TexasBill, what is your plan for the island,? are you concoting a scheme a la iraq?
you are babling all over the place from immigration to Metro, maldita bebida.
If the wall does not stop the mexican from comming, get ready to start using your rusty spanglish. In other word Mr TexasBill wannabe champion of the free world you are a pure hyprocrite.
FYI, I am a permanent resident of the DR.
However, as soon as thevisas for my wife and children are approved, we all will be moving to the USA.The "deportation laws" of each country are designed to affect those people who chose to NOT ABIDE by the laws and who have committed crimes (felonies and misdemeanors) against the indigenent society. So, YES, I am FOR the deportation of those citizens of my host country who commit a deportable crime against theUS society, the same thing for those citizens of the US who commit a deportable crime against the Dominican society and laws. That's at ALL levels.
My country was led by a religious nimcompoop who couldn't really see what was happening, or totally ignored the warning signs of failure.
I can make no excuses for the administration whose lack of a wider focus on domestic and world events which have led up to this financial cunumdrum now being faced.

As to the refereance of "greed", I must assume you are refering to thaat element expresseed by the "sub-prime " mortages in theUS and their proliferation into theworld-wide financial market. For my part, the perpetrators should be casterated and hung out to dry. But then, we have all sorts of these types of people in the world and Canada is no different when it comes to mentally corrupted individuals.
Needless to say, the people of the US will "pay up what is owed to China and the Saudis" for several generations to come. We'll give them the role of supporting all the other corrupt governments of the world and see how they like it.
You really need to read some of the positive historical facts about the US before making your snide comments in that arena. We have spent BILLIONS on countries in the past---feeling hurt because you didn't get any of the largess??
Your right, my track record does speak for itself. Ask the many posters on this board and on DR1 .
I have no plans to concoct any schenme "a la iraq" FYI. Why should I. I'm only one person who thinks the country has a failed government anyway. They certainly don't have a Republic dedicated to Democracy, no do they? Not when the underlying system is couched in the feudalism of the1100-1500 time frame.
I have detected nothing hypocritical about any of my posts to date, FYI. That seems to be only your interpretation of things posted. Maybe you should go back and read them all. you might just learn something about me in doing so.
You would find that I'm neither Democrat nor Republican. Just an Independent old geezer who has seen more of poverty andhard work than you will ever be able to imagine. I grew up during the Great DAs to "concocting a scheme a la Iraq", I think that is totally uncalled for and you demean yourself for mentioning it at all.
I'll leave you with this thought::
Read Rudyard Kiplings classic poem "IF". That represents the philosophy of life that I follow.
You just might get a bit of inspirataion from it.
TexasBill
Educated and passionate and then what ?
you could be a great history professor . You could study, teach predict the history of these two contries.
But as far of being a leader and influence the events and the order of thigs there ,I sincerly doubt it.
Well keep doing what you do best " History Teaching.
I must tell you I have learned a lot from you but I will not vote for you.
Surprise ! you did not even know that i could vote here in the US and in The Dominican Republic elections
Since I am a product of theFreat Depression and nearly 30 years of Military service, I think I have a fairly good idea of who I am.
You said theabove was a great post andfor that I thank you. As to being a teacher of History, I think not, since my knowledge in that field is drawn from personal observation and my interpretation of theeventstha have unfolded before my eyes. And, yes, Ihave rad a great eal of history from books by authors who presented the evidence of that history with aclarity anda wonderful command of the English language.
As to voting fro me, it won't be necessary to withhold that element of your prerogatives since I am not a political person and have never harboured any desire to hold a political office because I do not relish exercises in futility, nor do I hold politicians in high regard. To me they occupy the same place in society as what I refer to as "jicky-jack used car salesmen". There are "Statesmen" then there are "Politicians".
