Taipei.– Taiwan said Sunday that its diplomatic ties with Paraguay and the Dominican Republic are firm, despite calls for the governments of the two countries to recognize China.

Foreign Minister Francisco Ou made the remark to the Central News Agency (CNA), after visiting Paraguay and the Dominican Republic to strengthen ties. The two nations are among the 23 mostly small countries that recognize Taiwan.

Ou said that he visited the two countries because after President Ma Ying-jeou had visited in August 2008, "some people in these countries continued to urge their governments to recognize China," according to the news agency.

Taiwan lost most of its diplomatic allies after it was expelled from the United Nations in 1971, as many countries dropped Taiwan to recognize China. Since then, Taipei and Beijing have been fighting a fierce diplomatic battle to win over each other's allies.

We recognize Taiwan and it's right to exist as an independent Republic! We also recognize the Nation of China. But we will not deny Taiwan to exist as a nation until Taiwan decides to join in with China or China rapes Taiwan out of existence!

DR has to change its naive position on this and I hope it comes soon cause its costing our country countless business and educational opportunities. Its a pain the ass that DR is blacklisted cause of its support of Taiwan. Taiwan is part of China no matter what their political system is, and believe me I get an earful from my girlfriend who is Taiwanese about the differences of China and Taiwan. Its like bickering siblings and its gonna get resolved between them soon but DR and the countries that continue to recognize Taipei are just helping to prolong the argument.

Hey look at it this way.. the lesser the countries, the more bilateral trade, business and assistance to those who do.. let DR benefit as long as they can from that until Taiwan does go back to China :-)
