Caracas.– Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez questioned the exclusion of Cuba from the 5th Summit of The Americas to be held from April 17 to 19 in Trinidad and Tobago.

Chavez confirmed his attendance to the meeting which will be attended by representatives from 34 countries of the Americas. He also reaffirmed the request of his government to include Cuba in the summit.

Chavez said that South American and Caribbean countries can no longer accept impositions from the U.S. "This continent must be free!," he said and added that the Organization of American States (OAS), organizer of the summit, is not democratic.

U.S. President Barack Obama "has moral obligation to suspend the embargo in Cuba. On our side, we only request respect for Venezuela. We will not kneel before anybody," Chavez said.

Chavez invoking democratic principles? Has he been chewing coca leaves? Look, I do not approve of the Cuban embargo on the grounds that it hurts the people and rest of world thinks it's ludicrous.

Certainly, the embargo has been a total failure in its primary objective of bringing down a regime which has outlasted nine US presidents. Perhaps it is high time that, as a great nation, we re-think our objectives and re-align them more closely with our principles and trade policies. Heck, we are just hypocrites, for we openly trade with China and Viet Nam.

We could exercise infinitely greater influence on Cuba by trade and negotiations than we ever could with this antiquated cold war action. The Cuban people have endured way too much, without yielding, as a consequence of this policy, and it is high time it be eliminated.

BTW, grandma was born in Havana, and distant relatives are being affected by this grossly inappropriate policy. I would very much like to see it reversed

Chavez is right! IF the OAS is holding this meeting, they can not refuse Cuba attendance and input! Cuba can significantly impact the military and economic balance in the Caribbean if they want to!

The OAS is another puppet of the U.S. (just like the UN and other agencies are) and it is time to stop the political and policies bias put forward in this meetings orchestrated by the U.S. Given the fact that everybody's reactions and voting in the OAS are tamed by the U.S., this meeting are NOT DEMOCRATIC!

The U.S. uses the OAS to punish countries based on political or economical philosophical differences. Or even more on the drug war or illegal alien migration or free trade agreement, all have been used to punish countries using the OAS as a mean of attack ( the perfect camouflage to punish without incriminating the U.S.).

letroudeballeGeneroso,
"...Cuba can significantly impact the military and economic balance in the Caribbean if they want to!..."

Reality Check: We are in the year of our lord 2009; not 1985. The Cuban military, as with everything else has significantly degraded since the demise of the Soviet Union...

Screw Chavez and anyone who supports that despot. Perhaps the other countries will feel different about Cuba when it releases it's political prisoners? Perhaps not.

You took the words right out of my mouth Mister, I agree with that statement 100%

Don’t forget what the OAS did during the war of 1965
