SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic would become the 187th member state to join the international treaty banning production, stockpiling or use of chemical weapons, the organization that monitors compliance with the pact announced today.
The Global Security said the island nation has delivered ratification papers for the Chemical Weapons Convention to the United Nations. The convention will enter into force in the Dominican Republic on April 26.
"I congratulate the government of the Dominican Republic for its decision to ratify the convention, which draws us closer to the goal of realizing a universal ban on chemical weapons, and we call upon those remaining States that have not yet adhered to the CWC to do so without further delay,” Rogelio Pfirter, director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said in a press release, quoted by Global Security.
It said eight nations remain outside the treaty -- Angola, the Bahamas, Egypt, Israel, Myanmar, North Korea, Somalia and Syria.
“All treaty states are required to destroy any stockpiles of warfare materials such as mustard gas and VX and sarin nerve agents,” it said, adding that the treaty members are subject to inspections by OPCW personnel to ensure that industrial or other uses of chemicals do not promote proliferation.

Does that mean we can't use any more our huge stockpile of chemical weapons?
What is this an April fools joke?

no generoso what it means is that Dominicans have to be careful now, you can't be eating to much habichuelas con dulce on this semana santa, we all know that we are capable of producing the most lethal gases after an afternoon bowl of the beloved dish.
I'm always put on quarantine after a couple of jarros of habichuelas con dulce, every semana santa is the same with me, I become a fearsome WMD.

Maybe we should direct the politicians and consumers of habichuelas con dulce to point the lethal
gases towards the east, and towards the illegal Haitians and maybe all the Haitians will run back in disgust.
So that is why they MADE US sign the treaty. I wonder if someone got some money for this.

How do you think this is a disadvantage to DR. Before we get into chemical we need basic education down to everybody i mean who knows of a great chemical school in DR. We can't try to flight before we learn how to walk. This is a good move for DR we don't need chemical weapons in the middle of a corrupted gov is just don't sound right. we have to explore education, flora and fauna and health care services remember we are not a figthing force we only have 2 planes oh no only 1 since the last pilot was flying on a bad license.

From: Dominican Republic
How do we stop the avalanche of millions of people from the neighboring state? How do we halt two millions crossing over to DR? We should never agree to commitments that can affect the options of future Dominican generations!
Shorty you are right! South America and the U.S. has attacked DR with Cocaine (WMD)! I love your analogy!

Yes generoso, I bet they'll ask us to get rid of our nukes too. But seriously, if we ever get into a life or death situation, we will use anything we can to win, that includes breaking all treaties. No somos pendejos.

the DR has the most lethal chemical weapons of all.....that black smog that comes out of the trucks/suvs/busses/cars etc., on to the pedestrians on the sidewalk ,.....im sure sooner or later a lot of people are going to suffer because of it

sooner or later? what do you think is happening now?
From: Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo and Punta Cana
More sooner than later, indeed.
From: United States
ok dreadlocks.....im just comparing chemical weapons which kill rapidly compared to car smog which will take some time but will kill you just the same
the sooner or later phrase is rhetorical...but if you ask about 'now' i guess miloskorac is correct that 'now' will fall into the 'sooner' category.
and if you ask me 'what do i think is happening now'...i suggest you go do some homework list the stats and citations and find out yourself about this problem....
in the end weapons suck....no one should be attacking noone...but thats like fantasy land....what sucks more is when some have weapons and others dont
i did, now i know, thats why i brought up the subject

If Haitians were stronger and had the will we would be sitting in the opossite side of the island. They have tried before and guess what it just dont work. Do you think we are doing better because we are weaker now thats stupid to even say it out loud. In DR we fight together just to get a public road or school fix now what makes you think we won't fight when s--- hits the fence. We will get it done by any means necesary you better start believing that. If Haitians were the wall that was stoping DR to be rich trust me we would have taken all of them out by now but they are not. They help more than they hurt the country if you dont think so then go to them Sugar Canes and find out. Don't you know that this country was built on the foundation of being free from any other nation. Remember presidents have been killed here for abusing power what makes you think we won't fight please tell me.

Haitians were not brave warriors during the Dominican independence war.
Desertion was high as the common Haitian soldiers were terrified of the Dominican campesino wielding machetes and spears, and many times refused to fight.
They also could not ride horses as well as Dominicans and Dominicans riding atop horses yielding sharp machetes sometimes killed dozens of Haitians in one day.
There are documented instances of entire Haitian formations running for their lives and only the officers making a stand against the Dominican irregulars.
