New York.– Yulkendy Valdez of Dominican Republic, Miguel Blas-Matus of Mexico and Jorge Muñoz of Colombia were named "Immigrant of the Day" by the US immigration portal ILW.COM.

Until four years ago,Yulkendy Valdez, now age 14, lived with her family in a town south of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. With hopes for a better life, her family came to the United States when she was 10 and settled in the St. Louis, Missouri area.

Yulkendy Valdez had to learn English from scratch. She did. Last week, Yulkendy, now an eighth-grader,  won first place in the Post-Dispatch Spelling Bee. She will travel to Washington, D.C., in May to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  Keep in mind that she has only spoken English for four years.

Miguel Blas-Matus grew up with seven siblings in a one-room, dirt-floor house in his homeland of Juchitan, Oaxaca, Mexico. He completed medical school in Mexico but came to the United States and had to face many immigration and professional challenges.

Jorge Muñoz is a school bus driver who, in his spare time, feeds the down-and-out arroz con pollo in Jackson Heights, Queens. His nonprofit, An Angel in Queens, feeds the needy of all-backrgrounds who have come from around the world.

I hope she also learns math and science because language mastering has a very narrow market with limited impact!

Yulkendy,

Applause, applause, applause a thousand times!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great accomplishment! You make all Dominicans very proud. Please keep on going and achieve many great things, for you definitely possess abundant capacity for achievement.

I look forward to hearing your name in the future relative to even greater accomplishments to follow, perhaps with your name preceded by the title "Dr.".

Thank you!!!!!!!!

DT contributors,

With so much negative garbage coming out of DR, and our compelling need to contribute our own sarcasm and further negativity, perhaps we should all rejoice in this positive news and show our pride and encouragement. On this specific article, perhaps we should refrain from gratuitous and non-edifying comments.

Thank you.

i have nothing but admiration for this young miss. guys, this is beyond great. not only can she speak the language, but with enough proficiency to be spelling bee material. have any of you guys seen all the foreigners in the USA who cannot speak a word of english, after thirty years in the country? and, have you seen all the gringos who have lived here for 10 years, yet they cannot do much better than to order the next beer? young lady, you are magnificent. i hope you win the spelling bee. then, the USA, in disgust, will change the rules to make it harder for more Dominicans to win it!

further, gentlemen, this is why i campaign so actively for a more just society in the DR. the potential is severely diminished when only the children of the rich get a chance to shine. this young lady appears to be from humble beginnings, but look at her now! many of the children of the wealthy are boorish swine, who endanger society with their impromptu street racing, and their silly inclinations to behave like animals. because of their station in life, materially, they believe that it is clever to moon passersby through the sunroofs of daddy's mercedes. i say that they should be given a machete and ordered to cut cane, while the aforementioned stellar young lady should be sent to one of those prestigious private schools. no...i take that back. then she would probably be exposed to too many obnoxious behaviors.

This is fantastic! I know this Spelling Bee Contest quite well. These kids learn to spell almost every existing word. She is probably gifted but certainly a young girl who puts in a lot of effort in what she does. I certainly would not worry too much that she won't learn math and science!!!!! She is a great example of effort for kids from every country.

I also hope this girl has not forgotten Spanish otherwise she is just celebrating another culture and again, this represent how the Diaspora is being absorbed by another culture. We are losing our children to another cultures and once they are absorbed, DR loses big!!! Those children are not longer considering themselves Dominican but U.S. citizens!

Of course, I celebrate her accomplishment and the fact that she has mastered another language to the point of excellence (something is better than nothing) is amazing. In fact her performance helps temper the American attitude towards the Dominican Diaspora (perhaps more acceptance of our migrants). But I am just hoping that she diversifies her databank because of today's competitive market!

I hope future Diapora's children excel in the science and math! And that they comeback to DR to educate our people!

We always celebrate the positive performance of the Diaspora (i.e. baseball players, swimmers, etc.). What we need is for Dominican to excel in DR or at least for the Diaspora to return and to empower the criollos!
