Havana.– A U.S. congressional delegation met on Monday with Cuban President Raul Castro in his first talks with U.S. officials since taking office last year -- a sign that U.S.-Cuban relations may be thawing.

Castro was host to six black Democrats from the U.S. House of Representatives who came to Cuba last week to explore ways of normalizing relations between the two countries, which have been at odds for five decades.

The television report showed Castro, attired in a business suit, sitting down with the delegation, but gave no details of what was discussed. Delegation leader U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee has said the group did not carry a message from President Barack Obama but had come only to "listen and talk" with the Cubans.

Castro succeeded his ailing older brother Fidel Castro as president in February 2008. Fidel on Sunday wrote a column in which he said Cuba did not fear dialogue with the United States and on Monday wrote another recounting the visit of what he described as "an important political delegation."

There was no word that he had met with the group, but he wrote that one member had said "it was necessary to use this moment in which there is a black president in the White House and a current of opinion favorable to normalization of relations" between the two countries.

Hopes that U.S.-Cuba relations would improve have risen since Obama took office in January after promising to ease the 47-year U.S. trade embargo against the communist-led island and seek talks with Cuban leaders.

News reports have said Obama will shortly lift restrictions on family travel and remittances between Cuba and the United States, perhaps before the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago on April 17.

As Obama said before is up to Cubans if they want to be free or keep going down the path. The embargo should keep going or Fidel should pay back everything that was stolen in the 60s and recently.

It is about time we changed the out of sync and boring US embargo towards Cuba.
Let's turn a new leaf and not be stuck with the old ways of doing things.
Cubans are not really enemies of the US, let's extend them a helping hand.
Borrón y cuenta nueva.

Fidel shouldn't pay back anything. The people who lost stuff during that WAR need to get over it. It's WAR. People who lost loved ones during that war and the aftermath need to get over it. That type of thing happens in WAR.

I am sick of all the people talking about how their family fled Cuba. They fled because they had no heart. If you believe in something stick in there and die for it. That's conviction. All these people that are mad because they lost need to learn to fight better. Next time you might win.

Also, to everyone who feels the need to lash out at me because of what I think, Great. However, Fidel and his boys won and they should be able to do whatever they like since they won.

Do you happen to know why is the embargo maybe you should read on it first before posting. Taking embargo today change anything cause investor will invest in Cuba and reason is because fidel may decide to seize all properties at any point. By way welcome to dt

Let us not forget that Cuba has helped Dominicans and other Latin American countries.

Cuba has recently helped DR with the two medical outbreaks that plagued the country.
Cuba has also sent teachers too much need Dominican schools around the country.

CeraJotaA,

I am for the Best for my people, I think that there will always be some kind of Capitalism in the world.
But that we Dominicans need to embrace some of that other ism.

The commie Party in DR want to Unify the island and i do not like that Idea at all.
I wish we Dominican had the whole island for our selves. But then again whom would the rich have to cut there Sugar....?????

The Afroamerican delegation is there to strengthen the hand of the African population in Cuba (65 % is black many brought over by Castro from Congo/Angola). The African will expel whatever light skin people that remainr in Cuba!

If Obama said "it is up to the people of Cuba", then once again Obama has shown his stupidity since there is no democratic elections in Cuba and therefore, it will take a Coup d'etat to overthrow that Government. That is something Cubans will not do. Similarly, if was the U.S. who put the embargo (not the other way around) and therefore, they should take it away!

This is all politics, this is not about what is good for the people, but about the oil that have been found off the coast of Cuba, where China, Russian, Brazil, Europe and even Indonesia are trying to get oil from Cuba cost, the U.S just doest not want to be left off the piece of pies with hungry oil man with the money and the technology to get oil and get pay, they are just looking for a way out the hand of the cuban from miami that are the one that have the embargo on cuba,,they are still thinking that Fidel is going to return everythin the way it was in 1960. these cuban can forgive the past, i say forget them and move on to the future..most cuban 2nd and 3rd generation have no clue about cuba and does not even speak spanish anymore.....move on END THE EMBARGO

as i posted a year ago, the embargo will end when oil is found in Cuba. it just has not ended YET, because the cagey americans are waiting to see more conclusive results from exploratory digging before they play their hands. as soon as it is definitive that there is oil in cuba, Obama himself will be carrying the olive branch to Fidel, or Raul, whatever the case may be. as CeraJotaA reminds us, this is realpolitik. just as the rapproachment with Vietnam is one with the interest of more cheap labor, in the image of China. actually, were the USA and China not at loggerheads too, until the USA realised the potential economic benefits of falling in love with China?

Darth noted the embargo rationale:
"maintain sanctions on the Castro regime so long as it continues to refuse to move toward democratization and greater respect for human rights."

WHY DOES THE USA DO ALL THE BIZ WE CAN WITH CHINA?

The President understands US Policy inconsistencies & does NOT want Russian bombers 90 miles off shore! TS, comments are detrimental to America! But people like TexasShoe do NOT understand this becuz their on the wrong side of the argument, expecting Palin to restore America when she can not manage her household (Americans needed a better path & voted for one). We were tired of an oilman in the DC and +$4/gallon gas!

RECALL, I TOLD U 1ST, THE CUBA CHANGE WAS COMING IN SUMMER '08!

Cubans didn't kill Americans like Vietnamese; or the Chinese during the Korean war when US troops reached far into N. Korea and found out we were fighting & killing Chinese soldiers!

Obama sent this new team becuz he could trust them 4 a non-biased assessment!

Why are so may people quick to down play the Negative things the United States has done in the past. By the still hold grudges about what was done to them?

The U.S. might feel it was threatened by nuclear weapons but, the U.S. has much more worse things then just threatening. A LOT WORSE

Just like J.F.K , Obama and Slick Willy will soon HAVE the best weekend getaway suites in Havana and the best Cubanas in thier sacks when the pressures of capital Hill and nagging wives start getting to be to much for them. Oh , im sorry Mr .KENNEDY , they closed that section of the white house library when Fidel came to town and shut the lights off on you and your boy Capone . Be real ! This embargo really started when Fidel decided to suffer rather than bow down and kiss Uncle Sams Capitalistic star spangled butt for a few watts of electricity and a line of SUVS. I am in no way supporting the old tyrant , but I am saying that If Fidel didnt have the balls to be an independent country rather than sell out like that butt puppet Batista before him did , Cuba would have a Welcome to the United States OF AMERICA SIGN hanging on its malecon...

Who said oil lol ? America doesnt need Cuban oil .. thats why Georgie occupied Iraq and thats why Obamas got his puppet head up Chavez @#^ reading his marxist propaganda. As it was in the 50;s so will it be in the new post embargo era if the Lord tarries .. The las vegas of the Carribean . The number 1 fantasy island sex tourist destination in the world.. The Dominicana Prostitutes are already building thier rafts ..... The sad thing is that the only ones who stand to benefit from it are the ones who had enough money and influence to flee the island in the first place .
