Domingo.- The vice president of the hoteliers and restaurateurs grouped in Asonahores Friday said more than 50 flights with tourists who were headed to Mexico will arrive in the country this week, after the H1N1 virus that affects that nation prompted a change of destination.

Arturo Villanueva said those flights are being received via an agreement with Mexican hoteliers, as a show of solidarity.

He said all the necessary preventive measures have been taken across the country’s ports and airports and all necessary equipment have been acquired to gauge body temperatures.

The hotelier also lauded president Leonel Fernandez’s decision to allocate 50 million pesos to purchase antiviral medicine.

Villanueva said in addition to the measures the authorities have taken in hospitals and hotel zones, any person with an abnormal body temperature is subjected to an examination.

you always can know what a Dominican living in North America will write here..always negative or half praise or low level sarcasm.
In fact , I do not think any country could have done things better ..the hoteliers have worked well with their counterparts in Mexico , the authorities have already got equipment in place at the airports and the Government has got a good supply of medicine. There will be extra money for the hotel suppliers, the hotel employees and all the support industries and I think this is a win win situation for this country and for the tourists.
My congratulations to all concerned .

But you have to admit that a regular tourist that is not Dominican will take a cab and probably call a working girl since they do not know anyone on the island... Am I wrong?

xwill7, hate to pop your ballon, but tourist can go to any Caribbean Island and ride a taxi and find a Dominican working girl (a few colombian). Doesn't matter which Island, Antigua, USVI, BVI, Aruba, St Marteen, PR, Trinidad, Curacao,,, to name a few. I hope the DR can use this windfall and make most of it. Treat them right and they will return...Don't screw them thinking they will never return.

Some of you make it sound that the main reason tourist visit other countries is to have some girls ironing their bed sheets. Prostitution is legal in some places here in the States and Europe. Why spend so much money going to another country where these women are not required to have medical check ups and take the risk of getting STD?
Of course, some will go to enjoy the beautiful beaches and at the same time the services of these women who are readily available, but I don't believe that it applies to the majority.

The ones that truly concern me are the pedophiles. We know that too many Dominican parents nowadays don't seem to care a whole lot about where their kids spend their free time. It's too easy for these sickos to find what they want

Yes Amber you are quite right but just an important correction is that working girls do have medical check ups in la Romana and if they fail the doctors do not give them a clean certificate so they probably go to discos ..I am told the same thing applies in Bavaro but that is the end of my knowledge on the subject

Juan,
I hope that you are right and DR takes advantage of some new tourist that might have never traveled to DR. Hope the scam artists and petty theives do not ruin this... keep them coming back!
