I've said it before and I'll say it again: Posterity will be kind to Don Juan, not so to balaguer. I think it very doubtful that an international organization of the scope of UNESCO would create a "Joaquin Balaguer prize".

The DR is still struggling for democracy.
What it supposes to have is a democratically elected president.
Just like Hugo Chavez and Castro, Leonel is democratically elected into a dictatorship.

A great Dominican deserving of this and much more. Elected by the people and deposed the pro-American military- Bosch pushed for a revolution of man, humanity and for the poor.

Cibaeno75, you are right history will be much kinder to Bosch: he never killed anyone.
Caamano, Narciso etc...

Mr. Bosch's books are accessible but still give so much vital info to understanding our history. I hope scholars who receive the award are those who also find a way to wed a serious approach with accessibility even to non-academics.

Seriously?
Just show up with your transcripts and a check.
Then be prepared to spend 5 years to get a 3 year degree.

Ciby,

You upset DT monitors? Seems you've been banned. Last time I saw yellow sign next to name GC disappeared.

Forum sure to miss you if you are banned. Can't say I have always agreed with your points; nevertheless, I have appreciated them.

Here's to hoping this is just a warning and that you will not be banned.

I have never agreed with Juan Bosch and his Socialist Ideology; I may be a dying breed of natives; Yet, I lived in the times of his presidency in Santiago: The OAS (OEA) flooded the nation with food supplements, five gallon cans of oil, chiken in a can, etc. It was no paradise...

However, I do recognize that Juan Bosch was a literary genius and great thinker of the 20th century; I place him besides Hemingway, Neruda, Dario, Garcia Marquez..
A giant of an intellect.
But, I feel that this is the UN pandering, patronizing our country.

I call them as I see them. And I see a snow job in the Tropics with this UN gesture..

Arsenio:
I agree with you; this is pandering on the DR. It also look like this is more the result of efforts (lobby) from our current government to promote and exalt the figure of Juan Bosch at the international level. The same happened with the Hermanas Mirabal, our pseudo heroines. Why is this happening now during the PLD government? Why is this sudden admiration for "Don Juan Bosch"? I see the manipulation of our current diplomats in this case. I do not think that Juan Bosch was a "great thinker of the 20th century".; by what standard? By the standard of their followers ? We still need more time to assess the political impact of Juan Bosch in the political realm of our country. Let's not into into idolizing his Juan Bosch too much. The man was great; not as great as many of you wants to promote him.

Willmo;

Ever heard the joke about the land of the blind? Well, they say that if you have one eye there; You're in charge; Case in point Bosch who spent most of his life in exile attempting to become "El Manda-mas"; When his turn came up he spoke about planting papaya trees in everyone's back yards...... That was it; besides the redistribution of wealth via the reforma agraria....giving land to folks who never even had a shovel or a rake? Con que cara?
