FORT LAUDERDALE.- The Dominican boat captain has been sentenced to 9-1/2 years in prison for a smuggling attempt that killed six people off Virginia Key in October, the U.S. Attorney's Office said today.

According to newspaper Sun-Sentinel, Crecencio Hernandez, 63, was sentenced Friday in federal court in Fort Lauderdale on a charge of conspiring to encourage and induce illegal migrants to enter the United States without permission, resulting in the death of six migrants,.

Quoting authorities it said the Brazilian and Dominican passengers said they paid Hernandez between $4,000 and $15,000 to be smuggled into the United States.

The wooden boat with about 40 people sailed toward Miami on Oct. 24 from the city of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, authorities said.

The boat hit a sandbar off Virginia Key near Key Biscayne a week later and tipped over, after which six male passengers drowned trying to swim to shore.

Hernandez's prison term is to be followed by three years of supervised release.

He should have received a "Life Sentence" No chance of parole. Worthless bastard. Bottom line ...GREED.. these types know it well, and have no boundries. They would sell their mothers, if they could.

The 9.5 years seem light but this guy will wish he were dead when spending prison time with the Florida boys on the block. They will change his name to "butterscotch!". He will be 72 years old when released and likely deported to the RD.

Dominicans assumed that US law enforcement is the same watered-down version as Dominican law enforcement. Living in the RD gives them a skewed perspective of reality. Clearly, this was not his first attempt because he was experienced at this to make it all the way to the Keys successfully. This should tell us alot about the security of our borders...

They should beat his **s and then send him to life in prison. He knew that they wouldn't survive like many don't. How could he charge them the amount he did and just live with himself I can't understand the concept. It is so sad that DR officials don't do more to help the common people so they won't take the dangerous voyage. So much $ flows into DR that people starve daily!! I cant say anymore so mad!

Virginia Key is not really "The Keys" but a populated island off Miami. This guy was in sight of "terra firma", highrises and the Port of Miami...the fact is these people died after jumping overboard and attempting to swim for shore..

..human smuggling is on the rise from the Caribbean and has to be stopped.

The idea that DOMINICANS will try to cross the shark infested, rough waters of the Mona Passage to PR sends chills down my spine. Even in the worst of times, the U.S. remains a beacon of hope for the poor and opressed of the world.

Check this link out and if after watching those videos, you don't become less egocentric and arrogant and don't understand what is happening to your country and why your people and mine are still dying in the mona and windward straits, then I'll know that I was right to leave you alone. Good watching folks.

Chocking truth, isn't? I hope those who did take a look at those videos and who are still suffering from acute delusion will find a way to be healed. I don't ask you to make any comment, for I am not sure your society is as free as where I am living.
Anyway, when you see those high rises condominiums and commiercial offices and subway system being built in your country, just think it is only for the foreigner's eyes and not for the good of your population which, incidentally, is still fleeing your country the same way mine is trying to reach another so called promise land.
My country and my people and yours have been sold by the same economic and political elite that supposed to be the keeper of their well being. I wish to them and to you a very good luck and to die well in poverty.
