Santo Domingo.- The President of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AKR) told the press today that during a meeting in San Salvador an unnamed Dominican Republic official revealed that the Caribbean nation would recognize the independence of Kosovo, the Web site kosovotimes.net reports.

It said Behgjet Pacolli had a “very important meeting” with Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez, who has confirmed to that the Dominican Republic has decided to recognize the independence of Kosovo.

“Fernandez has asked his Foreign Minister to conclude all formalities regarding the recognition of Kosovo’s independence and also has promised to visit Kosovo during his first European tour,” reports kosovotimes.net quoting Pacolli.

It adds that Pacolli will also meet also with senior officials of several CARICOM countries.

Vice president Rafael Albuquerque was in El Salvador on Monday, representing Fernandez in the inaugural of president Mauricio Funes.

Analyst cautions

Dominican analysts compare the splintering of Kosovo from Serbia with the country’s situation with Haiti, because the growing number of nationals from the neighboring nation pose a threat of future demand for political recognition.

Oscar Medina, of the Teleradio-America afternoon program Poder de la Tarde, said the Haitian presence in certain regions in Dominican Republic resemble the situation which occurred prior to the civil war in the Balkans.

“Someday the ‘Haitian-Pedernalenses’ could rise up and demand independence from Dominican Republic,” said the analyst in reference to the southwestern province whose Haitian population is proportionately among the highest.

How would the DR benefit by recognizing Kosovo? That is the question.
Regarding the Haitian invaders asking for land rights, it is not a likely event, although possible.
So maybe the Trujillo policy of "kopue kotto-a" must be researched and studied again.

Please. Many nations from all over the world with all kinds of internal issues have recognize Kosovo because its case is unique. Kosovo is a reality. Has been recognized by 70 nations, member of two important financial institutions World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and soon to join others.
Domenican Republic should not follow such false claims by these so called analysts.

Go ahead announce recognition.

The Kosovo region in the Balkans in antiquity was known as Dardania, and from the 1st century AD formed part of the Roman province of Moesia. It was part of Serbian medieval states notably Raska from c.700 to 1455, when it was conquered into the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Kosovo Vilayet dates to 1875, with borders significantly different from today's Kosovo. Kosovo was incorporated into Serbia in 1912, and with Serbia became part of Yugoslavia in 1918. Kosovo gained autonomy in 1963 under Titos' direction, and in 2006 with the breakup of Serbia & Montenegro became part of the republic of Serbia.

Kosovo was absorbed into Serbia in the late 12th century, and was part of the Serbian Empire from 1346 to 1371. In 1389, in the famous Battle of Kosovo the army of the Serbian Prince Lazar Hrebljanovic was defeated by the Ottoman Turks, who finally took control of the territory in 1455.

During the rule of the Nemanjic dynasty, many Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries were built throughout Serbian territory. The Nemanjic rulers alternatively used both Prizren and Pristina as their capitals. Large estates were given to the monasteries in Western Kosovo (Metohija). The most prominent churches in Kosovo - the Patriarchate at Pec, the church at Gracanica and the monastery at Visoki Decani near Decani - were all adopted during this period. Kosovo was economically important, as the modern Kosovo capital Pristina was a major trading centre on routes leading to ports on the Adriatic Sea.

Ethnic identity from the Middle Ages was somewhat fluid throughout Europe, and people at that time do not appear to have defined themselves rigidly by a single ethnic identity. Those of Slavic origin, particularly of the Serbian background, appear to have been the dominant population culturally and were a demographic majority as well.

In 1355, the Serbian state fell apart on the death of Tsar Stefan Dušan and dissolved into squabbling fiefdoms. The timing fell perfectly within the Ottoman expansion. The Ottoman Empire took the opportunity to exploit Serbian weakness and invaded.

As well, mining was an important industry in Novo Brdo and Janjevo which had its communities of émigré Saxon miners and Ragusan merchants. In 1450 the mines of Novo Brdo were producing about 6,000 kg of silver per year.
The ethnic composition of Kosovo's population during this period included Serbs, Albanians, and Vlachs along with a token number of Greeks, Armenians, Saxons, and Bulgarians, according to Serbian monastic charters or chrysobulls. A majority of the names given in the charters are overwhelmingly Slavic rather than Albanian. This has been interpreted as evidence of an overwhelming Serbian majority. This claim seems to be supported by the Turkish cadastral tax-census (defter) of 1455 which took into account religion and language and found an overwhelming Serb majority.

The Second Battle of Kosovo was fought over the course of a two-day period in October 1448, between a Hungarian force lead by John Hunyadi and an Ottoman army lead by Murad II. Significantly larger than the first battle, with both armies numbering twice that of the first battle,[citation needed] the ending was the same, and the Hungarian army was defeated in the battle and pushed from the field. Although the loss of the battle was a setback for those resisting the Ottoman invasion of Europe at that time, it was not a 'crushing blow to the cause'. Hunyadi was able to maintain Hungarian resistance to the Ottomans during his lifetime.

Although the battle has been mythologised as a great Serbian defeat, at the time opinion was divided as to whether it was a Serbian defeat, a stalemate or possibly even a Serbian victory. Serbia maintained its independence and sporadic control of Kosovo until a final defeat in 1455, following which Serbia became part of the Ottoman Empire. The fortress of Novo Brdo, important at the time due to its rich silver mines, came under siege for forty days by the Ottomans during that year, capitulating and becoming occupied by the Ottomans on June 1, 1455.

Same thing happened recenlty with US, recognizing Kosovo.

Thats why Serbians burnt the US embassy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwF1ApXDa5M

The First Battle of Kosovo occurred on the field of Kosovo Polje on June 28, 1389, when the ruling knez (prince) of Serbia, Lazar Hrebeljanovic, marshalled a coalition of Christian soldiers, made up of Serbs, but also of Bosnian Serbs, Magyars and a troop of Saxon mercenaries. Sultan Murad I also gathered a coalition of soldiers and volunteers from neighboring countries in Anatolia and Rumelia. Exact numbers are difficult to come by, but most reliable historical accounts suggest that the Christian army was heavily outnumbered by the Ottomans.[citation needed] The combined numbers of the two armies are believed to be less than 100,000. The Serbian army was defeated and Lazar was slain, although Murad I was killed by Miloš Obilic.

I have met many Kosovars in the United States. Milos is issuing propaganda and lies. Kosovars are the most tolerant people in the world.

While you slavs killed each other over religion, Kosovars and their brothers in Albanians, kept their religious tolerance.

Serbia needs to back off from its lies. Another attempt to falsify the store..Serbia is only a neighbor to Kosovo.

Kosovo is like Domenican Republic where its neighbors like Haiti, in this case Serbia wants territory that was never theirs.

Domenican Republic needs go ahead to recognize Kosovo.

A few loser serbs come to spam the site. Last time i checked 80% of Serbs recognize Kosovo's independence unlike their politicians. Over 100 countries support its membership at two important world institutions which are also the UN organizations: the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

What this Miloskorac is saying that Dominican Republic should not exist because their country is Mexico. Like Dominicans speak Spanish, so there is no need for them to have their country. Like Kosovars speak Albanian, therefore their country is Albania..no need for them to exists. With this the Serbian Miloskorac is denying the existence of our mighty nation, the Dominican Republic.

Kosovo is a friend of Dominican Republic and a wonderful place. Having a strong ally in Europe that has access of sea port St. John is very important. Kosovo could be a major hub to our products in Europe.

Kosovo has a large Catholic population. The parents of Mother Theresa are from Kosovo. Serbs invaded Kosovo and violently took some of the Catholic Churches from Kosovars, and converted them to their cult religion which it's not Christians. Serbs are not Christians but worshipers of their own cults. Some were used as centers for chopping people off.

Folks, read Hague Court documents of Serbs leaders being indicted for Genocide.

Serbia is just a bully in the Balkans that wants to steal other countries territories. Tried to steal territory from Croatia, tried to steal territory from Bosnia, Slovenia and now it's trying to steal territory from Kosovo.

Their design is much larger in scope. They think of transforming the Balkan Peninsula into a stronghold of the Albanian mafia controlling the drug trafficking routes to Europe and extending criminal activities of Albanians to cover the entire European continent.

Yes, you can live in Albania, it is your country.
Not to appropriate other territories from other country.
You can have a Serbian residence card, or take a Serbian nationality, after legal approval, as far as you think living on the Serbian territory.

You can not say that you have three religions, muslim, Christian and Orthodox, when Orthodox are Christian. You can be Muslim, Catholic Christian or Orthodox Christian.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_religion
Here also you can see it on on interactive map http://www.mapsofwar.com/ind/history-of-religion.html
You can see that after Turks, only two regions left with Muslims in Europe are Bosnia (federation) and Albania...So these Muslims are converted Christians.

As far as I can see, you don't know who you are, where you live or what is your religion.
Please decide finally what you want and stop whining.

19th century
19th century data about the population of Kosovo tend to be rather conflicting, giving sometimes numerical superiority to the Serbs and sometimes to the Albanians. The Ottoman statistics are regarded as unreliable, as the empire counted its citizens by religion rather than nationality, using birth records rather than surveys of individuals.

17th - 18th century

The Great Turkish War of 1683–1699 between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs led to the flight of a substantial part of Kosovan Serbian population to Austrian held Vojvodina and the Military Frontier - about 60-70,000 Serb refugees total settled in the Habsburg Monarchy in that time of whom many were from Kosovo. Following this an influx of Muslim Albanian[14] from the highlands (Malesi) occurred, mostly into Metohija. The process continued in 18th century.[14]

Noel Malcolm suggests that the Great Migration of the Serbs from Kosovo is only a myth created by Serbian nationalism to justify the Albanian majority already in Kosovo[15], but a number of historians who reviewed his work, including Mile Bjelajac, Istvan Deak, Thomas Emerat and Tim Judah refute this

A study in 1838 by an Austrian physician, dr. Joseph Müller found Metohija to be mostly Slavic (Serbian) in character.[17] Müller gives data for the three counties (Bezirke) of Prizren, Pec and Ðakovica which roughly covered Metohija, the portion adjacent to Albania and most affected by Albanian settlers. Out of 195,000 inhabitants in Metohija, Müller found:

* 114,000 Muslims (58%):
o c. 38,000 are Serbs (19%)
o c. 86,000 are Albanians (39%)
* Christians:
o 73,572 Eastern Orthodox Serbs (38%)
o 5,120 Roman Catholic Albanians (3%)

Milos, thank god at least someone knows what they're saying.

As for domenicano, you're ignorance and stupidity never fail to amaze me. The same goes to those sprouting BS out of their asses about any genocide being commited by Serbs. Ever heard of the Jasenovac concentration camp? No? You might want to read up on that one a bit. Or about that alleged claim by a British journalist stating Serbians were setting up concentration camps in Kosovo to continue with the "ethnic cleansing" which all ended up being completely false? Funny how the journalist's reputation was on the line when she went to Kosovo to write up a story on this imaginary "concentration camp" and when none was found, she took pictures of an anorexic Albanian man behind the fence of a chick coup. Quite a stain on British news that was. You never hear any of that in the news, do you? But then again all you listen to is CNN.

Or how about in Croatia when a Serbian man I know very well survived by pure luck when the Croatian army was rounding up all Serbians in the town, and locked them all up in an orthodox church saying they were simply protected them, and ended up setting the whole church on fire? Or how about another town in Croatia where all the women where brutaly raped and burned as well as every other Serbian man and woman? That's never read or heard about, is it? But then again, according to you, that's not genocide. The only genocide that ever occured was in the little selo of Srebrenica which the UN considered a genocide by the farthest stretch of the definition. ~8000 people were murdered in Srebrenica compaired to the 600 000+ that were murdered in Jasenovac. Srebrenica is still worse, right, Domenicano?

Or that other ridiculous claim about the Hague reports. One can truly see how accurate any of Hague's claims and reports are when they accused Milosevic and Seselj of being war criminals and were never able to convict them as such? Of course, Milosevic died (of natural causes many of us doubt) and good old Seselj is still spinning them on their propaganda-inflated heads.

Another one; Serbia trying to take land away from Croatia and Bosnia? Really? How about trying this one; when Yugoslavia began seperating, Serbia allowed the independence for everyone as long as they didn't take Serbian territory with them. Didn't suit Croatia's needs that one. They wanted to make a greater Croatia by taking half of Bosnia and parts of Serbia with it. I doubt any country would allow that to happen.

And as you said, the Kosovars you talked to in America all seem like great people. Are you really that stupid? I won't even get into that one.

So you see Domenicano, the only role you play in all of this is that of an uneducated propaganda-influenced child. My only advice to you is to read up a bit more on the subject and then make your mind up on this independence of Kosovo. Only then will you realize the mistake you are making. And stop listing to CNN, the propaganda-central, and thinking you're on top of the world with the information that you heard in a one-hour special.

Ahora bien,

The fact that serbs are spamming this site, shows how insecure they are. Remember, in Europe, you are know the European Human Butchers. Killed half million people, raped over 100 000 women, burned down over 400,000 houses, kept people in concentration camps, ethnically cleansed 5 million.

these are not some youtube or serbian bloger sources but UN international court, Human Rights Watch groups.

Serbia attempted to colonize Balkans. Attempted to invade territories of their neighboring countries (Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Slovenia) so they can rake their natural resources.

Indigenous People

The first large-scale confinement of a specific ethnic group in detention centers began in the summer of 1838, when President Martin Van Buren ordered the U.S. Army to enforce the Treaty of New Echota (an Indian removal treaty) by rounding up the Cherokee into prison camps before relocating them. Called "emigration depots," the three main ones were located at Ross's Landing (Chattanooga, Tennessee), Fort Payne, Alabama, and Fort Cass (Charleston, Tennessee). Fort Cass was the largest, with over 4,800 Cherokee prisoners held over the summer of 1838.[53] Many died in these camps due to disease, which spread rapidly because of the close quarters and bad sanitary conditions: see the Trail of Tears.

Throughout the remainder of the Indian Wars, various populations of Native Americans were rounded up, trekked across country and put into detention, some for as long as 2 years.

Almost 120,000 Japanese Americans and resident Japanese aliens would eventually be removed from their homes and relocated.

About 2,200 Japanese living in South America (mostly in Peru) were transported to the United States and placed in internment camps.[55]

Approximately 5,000 Germans living in several Latin American republics were also removed and transported to the United States and placed in internment camps.[56] In addition at least 10,905 German Americans were held in more than 50 internment sites throughout the United States and Hawaii.

In reaction to the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan in 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt under United States Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942 allowed military commanders to designate areas "from which any or all persons may be excluded." Under this order all Japanese and Americans of Japanese ancestry were removed from Western coastal regions to guarded camps in Arkansas, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona; German and Italian citizens, permanent residents, and American citizens of those respective ancestries (and American citizen family members) were removed from (among other places) the West and East Coast and relocated or interned, and roughly one-third of the US was declared an exclusionary zone.

All I will say about this is I wish Josef Broz (Tito) was still alive, probably the smartest, least bloody dictator there ever was. Yugoslavians had a living standard on par with most western European nations, an independent foreign policy and the benefits of a socialist government (universal health care, eduactionetc...) Josef Broz played the west and the Soviets and Yugoslavia prospered, name any other leader that has accomplished that .
