New York.– Joseph Pabon, an elevator operator at a skyscraper near the World Trade Center site, was arrested Friday night in the slaying of a cleaning woman of Dominican origin whose bound body was found stuffed in an air conditioning duct.

The man was taken into custody at 7:30 p.m., NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. Police pulled him over after he left his Staten Island home in a car with two other people, Browne said. Charges were pending, he said.

Browne said earlier Friday that DNA evidence had linked the elevator operator to the killing of Eridania Rodriguez, whose body was found with a gold crucifix taped to her mouth in the Manhattan skyscraper where she worked.

Pabon voluntarily submitted to DNA testing during questioning after Rodriguez' body was found July 11, Browne said. The DNA taken from Pabon is linked to material found underneath Rodriguez's fingernails, police said.

Rodriguez disappeared July 7 in the middle of her shift at the 26-story office building a few hundred feet from ground zero.

Its about time, this guy was a major suspect from the very beginning. Too bad it took NYPD so long to begin a serious search for this woman.

In my opinion the NYPDhad to follow certain guidelines. Lets not forget that there were no witnesses and in fact the NYPD was lucky that the suspect agreed to a voluntary DNA test, otherwise this could have taken even longer. What I find really horrendous is the sponsor link right below the story advertising prostitution in the Dominican Republic. That is really an insult.

There is such thing as due process here in USA, as opposed to general anarchy in DR.

Crime was perpetrated only 7Jul09 and body found 11Jul09; suspect submitted DNA on same day. Since it takes time to process DNA, I suppose NYPD did a good and prompt and commendable job in effecting the arrest of this criminal.

Unlike in other countries, particluarl third world and lawless ones, here in USA, one must be found guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt before being convicted. Consequently, due process must be employed and a good case built before an arrest is effected. I believe that was the case here. The NYPD should be applauded rather than criticized, I believe.

I would like to know WHY DID HE DO IT?
Why would a 26 year old elevator worker find it necessary to kill a hardworking woman with children?
and stuff her crucifix in her mouth? no one knows if it was symbolic or accidental. Please elaborate (if anyone knows).

NYCDR,
No motive has been given as yet since the accused has just been arrested. If you wish to keep up with the story visit www.nydailynews.com or www.eldiariony.com the latter is a spanish news periodical. Both sites have printed continuous stories regarding this heinous crime.

The accused killer, this piece of garbage, had issues with women. He was arrested earlier for punching his girlfriend in the face. Apparently no charges were brought against him, too bad, he would not have been out to commit this crime.

Zak,
I have personal insight into the phenomena of domestic violence. You would not believe how many times a battered woman will refuse cooperating with the prosecution against her attacker. Unless there are willing witnesses many times we just plea down the offenders because the woman refuse to cooperate. No matter how many times we insist "you don't want him to do this to you or someone else again", they will hardly ever, ever, aid the prosecution.
