Leonel Fernandez, Manuel Zelaya.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- Honduras’ deposed president Manuel Zelaya asked his Dominican par Leonel Fernandez, “to use his influence and prestige before the government of the United States and the Organization of the America States (OAS) to obtain of the international community purpose restore him to his country’s presidency, which for him means the respect of the democratic institutionalism and the dignity of the Honduran people.”

The chief executives met in Panama City yesterday, to attend the inaugural of that Central American nation’s new president, Ricardo Martinelli, just hours before Fernandez’s return to his country.

Dominican ambassador recalled

Dominican ambassador in Honduras Jose del Carmen Acosta returned to the country last night as part of the responses by the Heads of State of the Central American Integration System (SICA), including the recall of their ambassadors in that Central American nation, to press the restoration of democracy in that country, interrupted after Sunday’s military coup.

Fernandez arrived in the country from Panama via San Isidro Airbase at 7:50 p.m., two hours after his scheduled arrival.

" The sad reality is that the Obama Administration has allowed the situation in Honduras to spin out of control. Driven by external backers – Hugo Chávez, Daniel Ortega, Fidel & Raul Castro – ex-President Zelaya deliberately pushed his country to the brink of institutional civil war. On the way to the train wreck which the Administration surely saw coming, no voices were raised in protest, no public statements of concern issued. At the end of the day, even U.S. friends in Honduras ceased to listen and did what they felt was necessary for their country."

Glad to see Honduras people fighting for what they feel is correct. Bravo!! If Zelaya returns, arrest him. LF should feel at home with Zeyala, as he too, has many alligators (the dominican people) snapping at his ankles. How in the world can LF justify spend time advising Zeyala, when he himself has big issues at home (where he should be spending more time)? How many other Heads of State stayed behind and too time to meet with Payaso Zelaya?

Leonel should be prepared to help. He is trying to pass the same constitutional changes in the DR.

DR should recall its ambassador from hondura and issue a strong statement and work with other countries to isolate this unconstitutioinal regime...

there is an assumption that the US is at fault, or at the very least should do more to settle the situation, or as some believe that they should step aside and not interfere in the issues of another. We have another assumption here as well, which is the one that Leonel has any fault for speaking to zelaya or even acknowledging this situation. One thing that has to be understood is that regardless of who zelaya is and all the things he has been accused of, that he is still DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED. THE PEOPLE PUT HIM THEE. THAT IS THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY IN ANY COUNTRY. THE PEOPLE. the courts and congress are just means to carry out the people's ideals (whether rightfully or not, corrupt or not). Second, I doubt that Obama's trestle board has enough space on it to involve his administration to be fully committed to this issue. I do believe obama has IRAN, IRAQ, AFGHAN, PAKISTAN, RUSSIA, NORTH KOREA, SYRIA, ALMOST ALL OF AFRICA, CHINA is a bit defiant and etc.

in continuation, don't expect the US to be fully committed to the situation of honduras, a country that's like the 3rd poorest in the americas. Regardless, of it being right or wrong the fact lies on the US having to deal with bigger issues. People will always think that their problems are more important than others but think of North Korea being less important than Honduras, or Iran less important an issue than DR. The geo-political climate is a mess and things have to be handled according to highest priority. No government has the authority to enter honduras and interfere in it's own issues (like the US once did in the 80's). That is why obama has done nothing. He has no legal right (through courts or otherwise) to go to that country and tell it what to do. Yes, zelaya was kicked out illegally (although he is a borderline socialist communist) so the government that is there now is essentially illegal. Forget about feelings about business and freemarkets. law is law.

and one thing the world has to understand is that the 21st century is very different than the 20th. The year 2009 is not the year 1979. The world is now watching. People are more restless. The coverups of the 80's by the US involvement in latin america most likely would be impossible today. If the US interfered in honduras, the world would be on it like flies on sh*t. there is no such thing anymore as the US being the father and all the countries in the world being it's children. There is no more big brother. Big brother is only so to it's own people as the world has gone out of control and grown more independent.

It is all so crazy to have Peru,Chile, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic lecturing Honduras on coups and democracy .Even for the USA whose interference in the affairs of other countries has led to so many dead civilians has no right to lecture and Spain who caused all the problems initially by not having fair or honest colonial administrations should but out ...no other colonial power has left such a horrid legacy of corruption and mal practice as Spain ..so I hope Honduras can be left to sort out their own problems

by the way, I am sure that those who can't stand leonel would be better served with balaguer or hipolito as president. Let's not forget the billion dollar bank scandal and inflation that went through the roof. Hipolito is the same guy also who destroyed the economy, right? Oh, let's not forget a president who was in office for like my whole entire life and part of my parent's life (talk about constitutional powers). Let's not forget that DR was nothing more than a hole in the wall where the world looked on a map and said who the hell lives here? Now LF is looked at as a crook or maybe much worst. Maybe true and I sure don't know. But one thing that I do know is that the country today is very different than it was 30 years ago. Fast forward to the year 2009 and now we have china, middle east, europe, etc willing to invest in this god forsaken country. Metro? YEA PEOPLE HATE IT. but it's a sign that the country's infrastructure is improving. conchos are much better right? NO

it is sad to say that all those who complain of imposing powers and imperialism are the ones who have no power to impose. Every state has its own self-interest in mind. There is no such thing as saving another country, or coming to the rescue of another, for the sake of just being a good samaritan. Name one instance where this is the case? America, the freest of all, has not done so. So what makes anyone believe that any country would come to the rescue of another for the sake of just plain humanity? No such thing. All in this world is self-interest. All countries are concerned for their own well being. If it is in their best interest to support another then maybe it happens. But don't expect for one minute that the world cares about what goes on in honduras simply because of honduras. countries aren't people or individuals who have certain sympathies. countries have agendas. Agendas that might interfere or conflict with even those of their own people.

Minister of Education Melanio Paredes has been explaining how over a thousand students were sold the answers to the National Standardized Tests last week. He said the teachers used cell phones and received RD$1,200 for each set of answers. He named seven people, including a ministry employee from School District 15-04 and a teacher from a private school....

"why not worry about the above article?.... "

We should be very leary about what happens in our sister republics. Events in Latin America have a way of mirroring each other from country to country even if under each individual country's peculiar circumstances. A sampling of twentieth century Latin Amrican history would bare witness to the fact.
