New Jersey.– Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and East Orange Police Department’s Detective Bureau raided the premises of an East Orange grocery store yesterday afternoon and arrested two targets of an illegal gambling operation based on lottery numbers from the Dominican Republic.

Moise Brutus, 32, the store owner, of Irvington, and Joseph Resolus, 56, an employee, of East Orange, were taken into custody and charged with promoting gambling and possession of gambling records. They are both being held in the Essex County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

During the raid, detectives found several carbon slips containing illegal bets totalling thousands of dollars and $5,000 in cash. "The investigation was not long after receiving the tip, but the police suspect that they've been operating out of there for two years," one of the detectives said.

Customers buying a handwritten ticket would pick three numbers, which would be matched to the last of five numbers drawn in the Dominican national lottery.

How do you know that they are from the DR? I know we have "cocolos", but if I'm not mistaken, their names are mostly along the English ancestry and these names are defenitely not English

those are Haitian sounding names. Plus, Irvington has a sizable Haitian population to suspect that these guys are Haitians. But Dominican lottery operations in the back of convenience stores and bodegas is big business in the East Coast. I've seen too many to count. Haitians and Dominicans alike partake in the activity, making profit. Heck the Haitians sometimes speak Spanish and the Dominicans are able to speak in Creole making for quite a friendly atmosphere. I'm telling you from firsthand experience, Haitians and Dominicans in the States get along well much unlike their island counterparts..

because you are a radical allumeuse doesnt change reality. There are too many instances to count where both people interact with each other in friendly ways, such as the bodegas. I've witnessed it, how are you going to tell me otherwise. I'm not talking about chopos, zoes, and the urban ghetto youth I'm talking about adult, older generation Haitian and Dominican emigrants in the U.S, especially the Tri-State Area. Your take on island politics has no place on the realities of the diasporans that live in this region.

So take your washington heights dominican trinitarios/haitian zoe pound ghetto culture out of the equation. I'm sure your average adult dominican or haitian diasporan can vouch for my take.
