Havana.– Juan Almeida Bosque, a comrade-in-arms of Fidel Castro since the start of his guerrilla struggle more than a half-century ago, has died of a heart attack around 11:30 p.m. Friday night in Havana, revealed a statement published in government media.

The 82-year-old was one of several Cuban vice presidents and had been among only three surviving rebel leaders who still bore the honorary title "Commander of the Revolution."

According to the statement, Almeida will "live on forever in the hearts and minds of his compatriots." Cuba declared a national day of mourning for Sunday and ordered all flags flown at half-staff.

A bricklayer who began working at age 11, Almeida was the only black commander among the rebel leaders. He was one of the most important and decisive voices in the battle to overthrow Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, as well as in the early years following the Jan. 1, 1959, triumph of the Cuban revolution.

After Batista fled Havana (to the Dominican Reublic) on New Year's Day 1959, Almeida served in various military posts, ranging from head of motorized units to chief of the Rebel Army's Air Force. He later was named a vice minister and chief of staff of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

Almeida was a member of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee since its creation in October 1965. His duties included welcoming new foreign ambassadors to Cuba and greeting other visiting dignitaries. However, Almeida cut back on public activities in December 2003, announcing he was suffering from heart problems.

Almeida also composed traditional Cuban music and wrote about his years behind bars and in the mountains.

In the END all will take this Route, nobody escapes Death not no one. His Commie Friends will Glorify, Miss and Mourn Him, His enemy's will rejoice in his passing and wish and wonder why not sooner.

It's safe to say no one gets recognized / promoted in Castro's Cuba unless one agrees and par takes in Castro's Communist Ideology and Murderous Atrocities. One can only wonder the Atrocities HE commented which are known only to the top remaining Living Cronies [ old Guard ], God and Himself ?

Something to ponder.....
What if one knew that within 24 hours one would depart [ Death ] from this World...would one change.....How does one want to be remembered....Not by a few, but by all.
Castro must be wondering by now......Am I next.
Old age is a reflection time of one's own past. We do not have TOTAL CONTROL after all.

ElProfe,
I also wondered the same.

MRios,
Very well said. Castro's days are short and when he Dies you will see one of the biggest celebrations this world has ever seen. I was in Miami when he got sick a few years ago and the rumor was that Castro had died. People hit the streets of little Havana in style. It surprised me how many young Cuban American teenagers were participating in the celebration. I look forward to the day that my country is FREE.

And now for an Cuban Blockade update:

Francisco Jose Hernandez - The Cuban American National Foundation co-founder and president states:

"Of toppling Cuba's government, he says now: "It's not that I wouldn't like to do it. It's that I'm smart enough, and I have enough experience in these things, to know that that is not possible, and that it's counterproductive at this time because the Cuban people don't want that, and we don't have enough resources."

America's beef with him his not the fact that he is a die hard communist ,but the fact that he seized their shit and kick them out of Cuba, not too many have been able to do that and live to tell the tell. He only turn to the Soviet when the CIA start to sabotage his cane field. The old man will go down in the world history books, not just Cuban history. elprofe,
Just like you I have experienced bigotry and prejudice in Miami from SOME light skin Cubans (Some)
They are not racists, they are delusioned " as--holes". The had hoped that they would be accepted as whites in US and quickly realized that they needed to have more that the white skin and the white features to be accepted as whites.
They need to have the white(right) religion, the white ( right)bank account, the white (right) name, the white(right) country of origin , the white(right) diet, the white(right)history, and the white(right) culture.
They can not love mofango, like cock fights, like to play dominoes, like strong and sweet coffee, like to dance salsa and think that they are going to be accepted as whites by the sickos of the master race.
Those who have created the master race club made it exclusive. You can not get in without being aauthentic member.
And demonizing, deshumanazing, brutalizing, their darker skin brothers still will not make them a members

My friend I Cannot imagine your pain for not being able to go home. But remember it takes two to tango, the US is who put this draconian embargo in place for so long without giving a shit who get hurts in the process. These people are ruthless when it come to achieve their means. They did the same thing to Haiti in 91,hell we had to convert our cars to running on propane because we could'nt get no gas. Look how their decimated the Iraqi society with their sanctions, people were not even allow to buy medecine, and then roll into Baghdad like heroes. As Far as their beef with Castro ,last I check it was the Chinese who ran over their people with tanks. Yes they want us to believe capitalist is good, communism is evil, but funny every day they have to keep kissing the Chinese asses to keep buying their treasury bonds. Yes free market economy is being finance by communism and Vietnam is one of America's biggest trading partner.

"He attended Yale University, but, as he stated, "[he] flunked out."

"In November 1962, at the age of 21, Cheney was convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI). He was arrested for DWI again the following year.[12] Cheney said that the arrests made him "think about where I was and where I was headed. I was headed down a bad road if I continued on that course."[13]"

"When Cheney became eligible for the draft, during the Vietnam War, he applied for and received five draft deferments.[14][15] In 1989, The Washington Post writer George C. Wilson interviewed Cheney as the next Secretary of Defense; when asked about his deferments, Cheney reportedly said, "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service."[16] Cheney testified during his confirmation hearings in 1989 that he received deferments to finish a college career that lasted six years rather than four, owing to sub par academic performance and the need to work to pay for his education."

Most people look only in one direction and accept whatever tales from their U.S. heros. They think this is it the U.S. Cuba fought to liberate itself from a government mafia. Castro had socialist ideas but after taking power came face to face with the true and after the U.S. refuse to assist him, he turned to the Soviet Union. Some choice. About the U.S. and Viet Nam, 50,000 american soldiers thats very sad. How about the other side, over a million that no one ever mentioned but Viet Nam became one Nation not two as many wanted to happen.
