josean I was at a function a few months ago where there were quite a few diplomats (golfers) and they all speak very highly of Leonel . except for his punctuality , so I think he is a good ambassador for the DR and even if a person has voted for another person or favours another person , he is the leader of the country and it would be interesting to hear him address his country men and hear him respond to questions

Why doesn’t he do this in DR with the press asking him questions? It’s called an open press conference.

For somebody who cliams to political neutral, you defend him more than Margarita!

Here is report on the snow job he deliverd at John Jay and not even winter yet, just a little taste of fantazies and tall tales!

President vows to fight drug trade

On the first day of his official visit to New York City, President Leonel Fernandez spoke at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and stressed that his administration and security officials are fully engaged in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime. He spoke of steps that have been taken to fight drugs and strengthen public institutions.
Fernandez claims that during his tenure a total of 19,000 drug sales points have been raided in the DR. The President said that a crusade against small-scale dealers has been launched in barrios across the DR. He said that drug consumption in these areas went up after dealers began paying their distributors in drugs.

"There is a need to strengthen the struggle against small-scale drug trafficking. We need to revise the Penal Procedures Code to respond to the changes in the patterns of organized crime," said Fernandez. He said that more international support is needed for local programs.
According to Fernandez, the increase in small-scale drug trafficking in the DR is the result of an increase in migration by young people from rural areas to large cities in search of jobs, and then fall into the trap of easy drug money. He added that the drug situation is global. He commented on the DR's favorable geographical position alos works for drugs trans-shipment.
On a more positive note, he said that the Dominican public now has greater trust in the National Police. President Fernandez highlighted the success of the low-income neighborhood security program, Barrio Seguro. He said that at the start of the program the homicide rate was 26.41 for every 100,000 inhabitants.

He said that by June of this year, the rate had declined to 22.81. He said patrolling nationwide at the start of the program was 4,000 agents, and that now 14,526 agents are on patrol.
Fernandez said that John Jay College has helped train Dominican police officers in criminal justice, to improve investigation and intelligence skills and scene of crime protection in the DR and New York.
President Leonel Fernandez also spoke on the future of higher education in the DR at Hostos Community College, and today he is scheduled to speak at Brooklyn Law School on Constitutional Reform.
President Fernandez is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly and the V Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative.

Josean it seems that this topic awaken your spirits, but it is ok. I have met the president a few times at the City College when he conducts one of these conferences. The reason why the president usually conducts these types of town hall away from his homeland is because they are high scripted and they have total control of the kind of people that attends. However, this is not surprising since most politicians do the same thing. I am curently working on my Doctorate degree at Fordham Lincoln Center and work closely with the City College Dominican Center, so it was easy for me to attend these events. The majority of the people attending are PELEDEISTA, because certain groups make sure that their peers attend, also, you have to declare party afiliation at least to get front rows or get to ask questions at the city college's. The president will be heavy on construction projects that been completed and projects that are on pipe line for the future. He and his advisers understand,

that dominicans often judge the success of their government on them amount of roads and public works that the government is able to produce. Therefore, it is very easy to satisfy the people that will be attending such event. That also, goes for the dominicanyork, who often talks about the stuff that havebeen built. For those of you that make it to the event, do not expect the president to address health care, education, eradication of third diseases, and fair distribution of growth opportunities in the country. He knows that the dominican population in there will not be as interested on that as they are about the next few kliomers worth of metro. One thing I say, it is more difficult to rule a people when they are healthy, educated and comfortable. The dominican gorvernment knows this and is actively working to make sure that its people never achieve such status. Keep them hungry, unhealthy and uneducated and they will be happy with roads and birdges and no services.

dagtan,

Your comment should be on the front page of the New York Times and El Diario La Prensa. It is as precise as the finest laser.

I too had the displeasure of seeing his performance at Lehman College several years ago on some so-called flavor of the month nonsense about including the Dominican Diaspora. You should have see my (our) poor countrymen/women report out on various projects as if they were going to be taken seriously by this charlatan.

What was really sad was how these otherwise smart men and women many highly educated were charmed as if the were snakes by his lying hyperbole.

I was snuck in because it was build as intimate discussion with Lie-onel of no more than thirty people and I was going to give him hell about the MERTO versus education. Three hundred were allowed in and I was never able to even get near the microphone.

I really appreciate your extremely accurate assessment. Thank you!

Thank you very much Josean. Josean you see those few people were present at that event that you declared to be professionals and they were still drinking the president's cool aid are first generational dominicans who were able to make it here in the U.S. What you saw is known as conditioning and even if you get educated, your brain continues to access things the same way unless you make a real effort. It was not easy for me personally to snap out of that mentality, especially if you live in dominican majority neighborhood. I was unlucky and lucky that when I came here at the age of 14 and are 35 now, I came to a neighborhood in which I did meet a dominican for months at time. The exposure to a different culture and their way of holding the government accountable for the good of the people forced me to question what I often perceived as important when it came to what the people that i help elect were doing for me as an individual. These people are still brain washed this also,

happens with 3rd and 4th generational dominican americans who are trying to connect to the home country because they feel disenfranchised here in the U.S. they only see and valued the physical when it comes to process and living standards. This is the worst form of ignorance when it comes to people that think that because they wave a flag and go there on vacation and never worry about going further into getting to know the country and the people they call bothers. then ignorance when it comes to what a government is for in the Dominican Rep is horrendous and sad. But when are sick and there is no way to get medical help, or you are hungry and have no suitable local schools or services to give you the hope, just the hope of better things to come in future, it is almost understandable that you simply do not care to search for such answers.

I saw his address to the General Assembly.

I must say he is a good talker, but a horrible walker.

It seems that he is really pushing the international agenda, yet how many of his deals will come to fruition remains to be seen. Yet he is a politicians politician, that isn't necessarly a good thing.
And the METRO seems to be a project which he can point to when talking with other leaders and dominicans abroad, a legacy project of his. Yet that money was sorely needed for other things like education. I have no doubt that one day the metro will be used to it full potential and even possibly hailed as a good project, but the timing was all wrong. There are priorities and the metro was is not one of them. Also the development going on in the capitol is stiffling, yet it is another sign of "progress," the infrastructure is not on place yet many ignorant people hail these tall buildings as such.

He was talking up a storm about the millenium project.

About x amount of kids die, etc, etc.

Yet he does nothing about it in his own country

HiHater, you might want to do some research about how fruitfull the metro in PR has been for the past decades. Not considering that PR is more educated and technologically advanced than DR.
