NEW YORK.- Dominican born Diccia Pineda-Kirwan Thursday night became the first Hispanic to obtain a bench in the New York Supreme Court in Queens County, in a ceremony held in the Supreme Court of Queens County, where the new Justice hailed her colleagues, elected officials and the people instrumental in her historic ascension to the post.

Born Diccia Trinidad Pineda Ramirez in the Santiago province town Baitoa (north) in 1955, the new Justice said she's a result of the American Dream, as an immigrant who arrived in the United States when she was nine, having to learn English to forge throught the Queens County Public School System and ultimately earning a degree in City University of New York (CUNY) University's Law School's inaugural class.

Speaking in the courtroom packed with more than 200 people including judges from the various courts, friends and a delegation of 20 people from her native country, the official who won the bench in last Novemeber's election expressed her emotion in conveying her appreciation to the many colleagues who attended the ceremony fraught with tradition as evidenced by a New York State Supreme Court Color Guard bearing the flag to initiate the induction at 4 p.m.

Justice Jeremy Weinstein, Administrative Judge for Civil Matters in the Eleventh Judicial District presided over Pineda-Kirwan's induction, Judge Faviola Soto administered the oath of office, Master of Ceremonies Justice Jaime Rios, whereas New York State Assemblyman Jose Peralta represented the authorities of the Hispanic community and with Father Arthur Rojas asking for prayers for the people of Haiti.

“It may take years to realize a dream, but dreaming itself is an elevating experience,” the Justice said quoting the poet Maya Angelou and to describe the long road to her successful judicial career.

To stress the importance of dreams in the search for success, she also quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.  That is to have succeeded.”

Pineda-Kirwan's rise in the New York Judiciary began in the elections of November, 2002, when she also became the first Hispanic to win a Queens County Civil Court bench, an accomplishment which prompted the Dominican Republic Presidency to bestow her with the Civil Merit Medal.

"I will strive to make my service as Justice of the Supreme Court an overwhelming success," she said, and asked the unwavering support of her colleagues, friends and relatives to accomplish it.

It is indeed a great achievement for her to rise to her position from fairly humble beginnings and I like her quote from Maya Angelou .

you know what mayne, a guy name william lantigua became the first hispanic mayor of Lawrence, Massachussets.
he happen to be of Dominican decent too.
i always thought if he had not been dominican the first hispanic mayor of lawrence mass. would of more likely be a puerto rican, because the northeastern united states or "east coast", is full of puerto rican and dominican "hispanics". unlike the western and southwestern united states that happen to be full of mexicans.

anyways, i am happy for diccia pineda kirwan , congrats.

A much deserved congratulations to Judge Pineda. In the interest of historical reality it would be fair to point out that she is not the first Hispanic judge to hold a bench in New York State. That distinction was served almost 50 years ago and by about 30 plus Hispanic judges since. I have had the personal honor to represent The People of the State of NY in the courtroom of more than a few of those judges who have served their Hispanic heritage with great honor.

Whether she is the first, middle or last, we really don't care.....we are most proud of Justice Pineda, nevertheless.

Justice Pineda, I really wish you much success, predicated on good judgment, impartiality and utmost respect for the law.

The faith and weight of a nation are behind you. Please elevate us and help us move forth, and be an inspiration to many.

You will do well, I am sure, and perhaps you will touch and mentor others to follow in your footsteps.

Best of luck to you and you have my full support. I know how tough the job will be, for former Justice Robert Lund is my neighbor [I coached his son, Robbie, in little league a few years back!]; sadly, he lost the election last year-you know, the Obama factor.

Well the writer really did care Glomar because he really did make mention of it. Historical precedence is important and when it is cited it should be acurate unless you agree that George Washington invented the lightbulb, Thomas Edison was the first US President and Jesse Jackson broke the Major League Baseball color barrier.

Devin,

You've obviously misconstrued my point above.

My comment was about pride of ascension to such high, prestigious office by a Dominican, not historical precedence or accuracy. I didn't and couldn't care less who came first....it is simply not that important. This is the celebration of a great moment in Dominican-American history, and nothing will take away from that. Period.

Please don't take it personally, as I was neither rebutting or attacking your preceding comment on subject. Really, in this forum, you sort of have to have thick skin and very low emotional pre-disposition, lest you wish for usual suspects to pounce upon you.

And, Devin, you left out an important fact: Al Gore clearly invented the internet!

I am sure Judge Pineda-Kirwan would be the first to admit she stands on the shoulders of many who went before her ....we all are proud of her and look forward to her future accomplishments

"What you talking about" Mr. GC??? I traded Gary for Jesse because I thought Jesse would be more
recognizable in this forum.

Glomar, I have thicker skin than most, I assure you. I did take personally the fact that my good friend, the Hon. Rolando Acosta who was THE FIRST NY SUPREME COURT JUDGE OF DOMINICAN DESCENT had his accomplishment and career practically rendered moot by some of the misinformation in this article. I am all for Judge Pineda and the pride that she evokes in Dominicans and all Hispanics, I just don't think it's necessary to attach an unmeritous claim in order to heighten that sense of pride however innocent that claim may have been. And I'm sure Judge Pineda would wholeheartedly agree.

And what do you mean by trying to infer that Al Gore did not invent the internet, next thing you'll try to have me believe he didn't invent Global Warming either.

Devin,

While he may not have invented "Global Warming", being from Tennesse and knowing how attached they are to BBQ'd food and beans and such, he likely generated much "local Warming"; lots of latter can soon add up to former. So, it's not entirely impossible that he indeed could have invented "global Warming".

Oh no, no Nanette Mr. GC. I didn't trade away the teams future, in fact I just signed this guy named Casey from the Mudville Nine, he's just great under pressure. Anyway, different strokes for different folks. I apologize for those that didn't get the double entendre of my message and for going off topic but the GC made me do it.

The article is 99% accurate coming straight from the horses mouth, maybe a better choice of more accurate words should have been used, like substituting the word Dominican for hispanic that has a much larger interpretation.
Final verdict:
In the interest of historical accuracy and having been devin 11 a certifiable witness in the events, the accounts divulged by our esteemed friend, devin11, do have validity, and the corrections have been taken into account. He dicho.
