Washington.– Haitians who were
already illegally in the U.S. are allowed to remain for the time being because of
their country's catastrophic earthquake, The Obama administration said Friday.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano
granted the temporary protected status on Friday, two days after she
temporarily halted deportations of Haitians, even those already in
detention.
The protection is only available to Haitians already in the
country as of last Tuesday, and allows them to stay and work for 18
months. Napolitano told the press that the temporary legal status is an act of compassion. "It's a horrible thing that has happened to Haiti," she said.
Temporary
protected status is granted to foreigners who may not be able to return
safely to their country because of a natural disaster, armed conflict
or other reasons.
The
pleas have been denied despite four tropical storms in 2008, massive
floods almost every other year since 2000 and the long-running
political strife that has prompted thousands to seek asylum in the U.S.
About 30,000 Haitians have orders to leave the U.S., according to Department of Homeland Security statistics. Many others are appealing their cases. The federal government estimates there are about 100,000 to 200,000 Haitians living in the U.S. illegally, Napolitano said.

I think that the U.S. should implement a "peter pan or pedro pan" program for those haitians children who due to a natural disaster do n ot have any family or parents. This is actually needed more than the nice deal that the cubans got via the same program in the early 1960's. BTW, those cubans were in the hundred of thousands, so if any cuban in Miami complaints about another peter pan for the Haitians to Florida, SHAME ON THEM DISGRACEFUL BASTARDS.

Abdoulaye Wade said Haitians could "return to their origin"
Senegal's president says he will offer free land and "repatriation" to people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
President Abdoulaye Wade said Haitians were sons and daughters of Africa since Haiti was founded by slaves, including some thought to be from Senegal.
"The president is offering voluntary repatriation to any Haitian that wants to return to their origin," said Mr Wade's spokesman, Mamadou Bemba Ndiaye.
Tuesday's earthquake killed tens of thousands and left many more homeless.
Buildings have been reduced to rubble, the distribution of aid is slow, and people have been flooding out of the devastated capital, Port-au-Prince.
"Senegal is ready to offer them parcels of land - even an entire region. It all depends on how many Haitians come," Mr Bemba Ndiaye said.

He stressed that Wade had insisted that if a region is handed over it should be in a fertile area, not in the country's parched deserts.
Senegal, a nation of 14 million roughly the size of South Dakota, is considered one of the most stable and developed in the sub-region. Still nearly half of working-age adults are unemployed and the country has been burdened by high food prices, frequent blackouts and spiralling energy costs.
Many have criticised Wade for being a dreamer, proposing lofty projects that do little to alleviate poverty or address endemic corruption. Others see him as a statesman who dares to have a vision for Africa.

Atabey, good job in getting this in before me. I was planning on reporting it last night but decided to go to bed instead. Atabey, remember that many Haitians are also part of the American Slaves Diaspora under Frederick Douglas and Abe Lincoln' s plan to remove them, so they did not suffer more under the American slave system. However, such method failed due to the fact that the Haitian landowners, ex-slaves themselves, enslaved these new comers, forcing Lincoln to consider emancipation instead.
History is a beautiful thing when one decides to study it an understand it.
On other news, yesterday, two Dominican nationals working at a mobile kitchen were shot in the Haitian capital. There is not much details, but they are in critical condition according to a report on cnbc.

African American interest in colonization increased. Haiti's president, Fabre Geffrard, hoping to ease the island's labor shortage, promoted policies that encouraged immigration but were not as generous as those offered in the 1820s.

In March 1861, Holly sailed to Haiti with 111 migrants from Connecticut and Canada. During the course of the year, several other journeys brought 800 more to the island. Most were unprepared for life in a different environment. Many complained about the climate and the language barrier, and expressed contempt for Vodou and Catholicism. Haitians were often suspicious of the immigrants, whom they described as lazy and uncooperative. Most immigrants, who came from American cities, did not want to work on farms and sold the land they had received for free in order to settle in the urban centers, where they could not find work. In addition, the government's subsidy policy depleted the country's already minimal treasury by funding emigrants who often left after their four months were over. The majority of the Americans returned home, but others kept on arriving.

President Abraham Lincoln had for some years advocated the removal of freed slaves as a partial solution to the nation's "race problem." In 1863, he supported the transportation of 453 men and women - most were former bondspeople from Virginia - to L'Ile-à-Vache, an island off the Haitian coast. The experiment failed due to inadequate planning and poor leadership. In less than a year, the survivors were returned to the United States.
Many Americans, black and white, were opposed to Haitian immigration. Their attacks were not as strong as those against Liberia, mainly because it was a movement initiated, for the most part, by African Americans. In fact, the 1854 National Emigration Convention actually endorsed Haitian immigration. But the opponents of Haiti were numerous. Frederick Douglass, who was opposed to emigration but had finally encouraged the Haitian movement, later abandoned the cause.

Widespread migration to Haiti never materialized. Estimates of the number of African Americans who made the trip range from eight thousand to thirteen thousand, but most returned to the United States. Unlike the situation in Liberia, the island's fairly large but mostly transient African-American community left no lasting evidence of its presence."

Dagtan,
While the current situation is urgent, I would like to propose that the long-term option should include the nation of France making amends for their historical raping and pillaging of the people and nation of Haiti by offering a third of the department of Guiana in South America for a New Haiti to emerge. The African slaves that fought the French Army for liberation and won their War of Liberation in 1804 were later ostracized and required to pay-back huge sums in reparations to France in order to be recognized by the international Community in the 1800s. It took Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War to finally establish diplomatic relations with Haiti. France gives Haiti a part of what you stole! Give Haiti and her people a chance at modernity. France should partition a third of French Guiana and it give to the Haitians as free state. Any reconstruction monies should go towards fulfilling that. French Guiana
Area 83,534 km2 (32,252.7 sq mi)
Population: 230,000
Hispaniola
Area 76,480 km2 (29,529 sq mi)

Clearly there is enough unused area to create a free Haitian state in French Guiana being that most of French Guiana is beautiful lush jungle. All France would have to do is keep the French Foreign Legion there to make sure over deforestation doesn't occur.

It's amazing that as a country, our government runs into Haiti to be the "good guys" and our news stations broadcast the blood and gore 24 hours a day, and tell us how great we're doing by texting money to Haiti.
Then our President realizes that they may want even more help, so we finally say, "Nope, sorry, we can't help you anymore."
While we are sitting in our beautiful houses and our SUVs and sitting in traffic going to our jobs, these people have nothing. We help them until it inconveniences us.
How sick is this? I mean we've heard the analogy already -- it happened (and is still happening) in Katrina and that is OUR country... Does it really matter what we call ours? We're all people.
