Santo Domingo. - President Leonel Fernandez signed an agreement to recognize Honduras president elect Porfirio Lobo yesterday, via which the new leader pledges to install a Government of Unity and of National Reconciliation.
Fernandez noted that in the Latin American Summit Dominican Republic objected the recognition by the Latin American community of the elections held in Honduras, because it lacked the sufficient values needed for a total return to democracy, aside from a dialogue and a willingness to reconciliate.
However in the context of Lobo´s commitment with the Agreement of San José, signed in Tegucigalpa, and to yesterday´s agreement signed in the National Palace, Fernandez said it justifies Santo Domingo´s recognition of the Honduras Government, whose inaugural is slated for January 27.
“Dominican Republic will be present in president Lobo´s inaugural and will return with (deposed) president Manuel Zelaya,” Fernandez said.
The Dominican leader said he expects other governments to also recognize the new Honduran authorities, since it´s a question based on the return to democracy recognized by all the political sectors of that nation.“Manuel Zelaya has agreed and we understand that we from the Dominican Republic can contribute so Honduras returns to peace, to the civilized coexistence and which is the base for its progress, its prosperity and the well-being of its population.”

danny00 ,,I think Leonel still is keen for the DR to have a seat on the security council as Mexico leaves in 2010 and Brazil in 2011 ..but I agree that his initial handling of Honduras seemed only to please Chauvez but like all politicians he leaves a door open so is now best mates with President Lobo . Leonel has a very good relationship with most world leaders and that is no easy task .
