EXCLUSIVE FOR DOMINICAN TODAY

Port-au-Prince. – I wake with a start as the earth begins to tremble beneath me. A distant muffled roar fills the air and the ground starts shaking violently this way and that. The aftershock rips through the waking city sending traumatised survivors of last week’s earthquake running into the streets. With a magnitude of 6.1 it is the strongest in a series of tremors that continue to plague this beleaguered city.

I get up and leave the tent, entering a world of chaos and confusion. The air is filled with the cries of young children and dogs barking in the rubble filled streets. The camp is a hive of activity as the Dominican Defensa Civil, dressed in their bright orange t-shirts prepares for the day ahead. One week after the quake fewer and fewer survivors are being pulled from the rubble but this mixed team of volunteers and professional search and rescue experts is hoping they will find life somewhere in the stricken city.

I scramble into the back of the pick-up truck and we set off past a series of improvised clinics that share our compound. The injured and the dying lie on the sidewalk feebly brushing flies from their wounds, while frantic doctors and nurses rush from patient to patient administering what treatment they can. We approach the thick steel gates of the compound and Peruvian soldiers from the United Nations move to open them, the sun glinting off their trademark blue helmets.

We know what to expect outside as the crowds have been here for days but still I am unprepared for the heaving mass of starving survivors that crowds the gates. Some are angry at the lack of help they have received, some look desperate and others simply stare with deadened eyes, all hope lost. Behind them on a wall of cracked concrete are painted the words, “WE NEED HELP”. Wielding their batons the soldiers drive back the crowds and slam the gates behind us.

Helicopters buzz to and fro like flies overhead as we drive on through the city. As we draw closer to the centre the full extent of the destruction becomes apparent. On all sides now buildings lie reduced to rubble. Pieces of furniture, cooking utensils and even toys lie scattered amongst the debris, a horrendous reminder of the humanity lost with the collapse of these buildings. Mangled masses of twisted steel protrude above the concrete like broken skeletons. My mask does little to prevent the stench of death from washing over me. After a week in the infernal, searing heat the thousands of bodies yet to be retrieved from under the rubble have started to decompose leaving a sickening odour hanging over the wounded city.

We drive on right into the city centre, past the remains of the presidential palace and then a collapsed church. A statue of Jesus on the cross stands proudly in front of the crumbling building, a powerful symbol for the staunchly religious Haitians. And on, deeper into the inferno we drive, blinded by dust and the smoke from countless heaps of smouldering rubbish. On a street corner to our left people walk past the charred remains of a child but pay it no attention. Death is everywhere. It lurks around every street corner, under every building. We pass a sign hanging in front of a collapsed building: “SOS HELP – 20 DEAD”.

Eventually we reach a pile of rubble indistinguishable from those all around us and we disembark. I am told it was once a bank and that there are still people clinging onto life inside. For an hour the rescue team searches for signs of life. They command silence from the growing crowd of spectators and using sensitive sound-detecting devices they strain for sounds of hope. But none is heard. It appears we have arrived too late.

I see a rag of red and blue protruding from the wreckage and with a gentle tug it comes free. A layer of dust falls off it and the Haitian flag is revealed. A bystander takes it from me and climbing on to the rubble lifts it skywards in defiance. It flutters briefly with a gust of humid wind, providing a splash of colour in the dusty grey wasteland and brief smiles of hope flicker across the faces of some of the watchers. Several gunshots ring out over the city and in an instant the illusion is shattered.

All through Port au Prince the scenes are the same, from the cathedral to the shacks of the Cite Soleil slum. The city is broken and its embattled people are desperate. It has been over a week now since the earthquake struck yet still many parts of the city have received little or no aid. If the people do not receive help soon, it may well be too late.

If you are a Christian then you believe that God created everything.
If God creating everything then he also created evil, pain, death and suffering...including the earthquake in Haiti.

So every baby, child, innocent and mentally ill person in Haiti who died from the Earthquake did so because God made it so.
Every person starving does so because God wills it.
Every young child forced into prostitution because god wills it.
Every Pedophile was created by God.
Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pot, Castro.....All made in god's image.

How can Christians, Jews and Muslims sleep at night?

if you are being serious ,then we are told in the Bible that it is impossible for us , mere humans who live a transitory life , to understand the way our God works ..in some religions, such as Hinduism, they believe in Karma, which is the will of God ,or what ever will be will be . No one can comprehend the mystery of the ways of the Lord but we are told that his love for us is eternal..is very difficult sometimes to be a good christian but I think it is better than having no faith .

So God's a product of man's imagination just as you and everything else that surrounds you is part of man's (or better yet, your) imagination. All the atoms got together in a conference and decided they would combine just right molecularly so they can give way to all the different types of matter, flesh, bones, different DNA strings, etc.

Tell me how would you start making oh I don't know.. a cow? How would you MAKE a man? Oh and by the way, the man you try to make has to have life, a mind, emotions, free will & a spirit. No need for good looks, just make one.

AnthonyC,

I'm a Christian and I'm able to sleep at night just fine. Why? Because I understand some God. Not all of Him.
God doesn't create evil. Man & the devil do. We humans have a free will and there's a principle created by God that says that whatever you sow, you shall reap. You do evil (sin), you reap death (both physically and/or spiritually). Spiritual death is merely separation from God. We're all creatures made by God, but we're not all children of God. Being a child/son of God implies having a relationship of Father & son/daughter. I can't explain it all here, but that's more or less along the lines of what I want to introduce to you... may the LORD GOD bless you and expand your understanding through an encounter, a vision, a dream or a revelation.

FAITH is the vessel to understand God. If you're trying to fit Him into your finite mind, you'll fail. He surpasses all human understanding. Faith is for the heart, not the mind. Read the Word. Again. And aga

You might be a non-believer and that's entirely your right and prerogative; however, there is something very compelling about that image of Christ on the cross standing as sentinel in midst of this chaos, catastrophe. To the believer, this might be a reminder that God has told us he will not give us any more than we could handle.

He is looking for believers amidst this chaos, and the recompense should be a better and more modern Haiti. I must admit that I have been noticeably moved by the seemingly unshakable faith of the Haitian people. Yes, God will look after them and provide and reward them for their faith and suffering. Yes, I fullly believe that.

temetito, deicibao, Bizc8, riosm etc. You are certainly entitled to your belief, but ignorance to the knowledge and facts of our univers and mother nature is obviously something you choose to be.

The cristian religion has had 2000 years of influence and indoctrination, hence it is almost in our gens. However we are from nature born with a brain, some smarter than others, please make use of it to objectivly look into subjects from all angles, given all information and not solely one side before making a decision.

Hitler had only 10-15 years of indoctrination of the German citizens before he managed to have their fully support of going to war with the rest of the world.

We are only citizens of mother earth, easily being fooled into sheeps for the right cause of some so called "god", even though we have a brain. Use your brain and try not to be "fooled". Good luck.

Anthony ,
I Am atleast in word ''a christian'' , even though my life usually does little to support that claim .
However, please note that God created Lucifer , not the Devil ! Lucifer , the perfect angel became the Devil or Satan after his pride got the best of him and he decided to become the Hitler of the cosmos . What God intended and what God has allowed as a result of mans freewill and sin are 2 different things . In the bible , Jesus very clearly says that hell was created for the devil and his angels , not man , and that those that go there do so by making a choice of thier own free will . God does not send a person to hell , He only honors thier decision to go. GOD has sworn that in these days and on the day of judgment that is knocking at the door, that He will not judge His children with the wicked , which is why I boldly proclaim that this is not the wrath of GOD . Dom,

There is an old sying stating that: "there are no atheists in a foxhole".

Extrapolating to present, this could be re-stated as: "there are no atheist under the earthquake rubble".

When we have time to reflect and we sense presence of "grim reaper", inevitably, we all invoke the name of God. Some are lucky, and attributing to sincerity of plea are rewarded with second chance. These chosen ones oftentimes go on to become best ambassodors for christianity.

I've seen ample evidence of christian faith in midst of this catastrophe afflicting Haiti, and it has clearly made me realize just how weak and lucky I am.

"There is an old sying stating that: "there are no atheists in a foxhole""

Old saying but not true. I can attest to that.

"I've seen ample evidence of christian faith in midst of this catastrophe afflicting Haiti, and it has clearly made me realize just how weak and lucky I am."

Did faith prevent the earthquake?
Did faith prevent people from slow agonizing deaths in the rubble?
Did faith prevent 1000's from being buried in mass graves without any chance of identification?
Did faith prevent over 100,000 people's terrifying deaths?

If you need faith get get by then more power to you.

but

If you truly believe in the Judeo/Christian/Muslim god then you have to accept that it was God's work that caused the earthquake in the first place.

AC,

God is very complex and difficult to understand. That is the way it is and probably the way he wants it.

To have faith is to believe in him and his way unquestionably. I truly envy those who fully trust in him, forsaking all worldly temptations.....they are the best people I've ever known or seen; they are truly special.

The problem I see with your thinking above is that you have too much attachment to worldly things and perceive death as the very end and are terrified of it.

People of faith don't fear death. They rejoice in the fact they will be welcomed by their mighty father into the kingdom of heaven and eternity. If you don't believe me, ask any born-again christian-they'll tell you.

You may laugh at them, for you don't understand faith; however, they know that they have an unbreakable promise of eternal life, insurance that can not be bought with money or worldly things. Only faith and acceptance can bring this to you, and it's largely free.

on the contrary - people who need a god and a religion to hold on to are too scared of death being it - nada mas - they cannot accept this fact and therefor need a god/religion to promise them a better life after death. The masters of the different religions know this very well and hence they know they will have a huge number of people embracing their promises. Try to do the best when you are living and accept to be taken back by mother earth, being a good fertilizer, when its your time. Accept the simple truth of nature, and if you deliver a coupon you might win the lottery.

Funny, Man lives by his own rules then blames God for his misgivings, Man is given the freedom of choice.

Amazing to think we all see the goodness and greatness of God in Men, example: aide to Haiti yet we refuse to admit or admire his existence.

"People of faith don't fear death" Terrorist use that same argument and fell that by killing the infidels / non-believers is an guarantee to heaven with 70 virgins to boot. One should not mix apples with oranges.

I believe Mans choice to refuse to believe in a divine therefore puts himself equal or above God is above all sins.

And to think when ever something goes wrong to a non-believer the first words muttered is "Oh ! my God".

Most non-believers know nothing about "FAITH"....faith one cannot explain, see and touch, but know all about greed, selfishness and evil.

Fact, Also most non-believers come from non-believing parents. Teach a Child faith he will return to it.

Northern Pirate,

I gather you are a non-believer. Sad, but your prerogative, nevertheless.
20 years ago at my supervisor's in-laws funeral [they had perished in plane crash in Hawaii] , the media [present because mother-in-law was prominent artist] couldn't believe how instead or mourning everyone was rejoicing because our fellow Christians had gone to heaven to meet their father.

One reporter was so moved that he immediately became a believer and was baptized. To this day, he still tells the story. I saw no fear of death in that room, from anyone!

Riosm also cites another relevant example, and that is Muslim fanatics-who clearly believe that quickest ticket to heaven is to kill an infidel, and they are readily willing to give up their own lives for it-without least bit of fear. The promised of 72 virgins helps, but with so many martyrs already in line, all that's left is unics. Hope they have unpleasant surprise in afterlife.

If it isnt the oil you are going to war over, it is the difference in religion - it all comes down to gread and superiority. That is definately why the catholic church are in charge of and running the whole show in the LAC. In my opinion you have spoken like a true non-believer a real "know it all".

It also sounds to me like your an expert and know all about FAITH let's see......

I see examples of faith everyday and acts of love and compassion, that's the God I believe in.

What's your God ? money, fame, hate, evil, power, science, injustice, greed or self ?

Every Man has his own version God.

No Man can serve two Gods for he'll love one and hate the other.

Remember......you can't take it with you and you can't buy or cheat your way to Heaven.

Example of probably your faith in Man:
You have money in the bank, with a phone call you get your current balance, with the Idea it will be there tomorrow, it's there when you need it, and grows with interest. Remember you can't take it with you or buy your way to Heaven.

In your mind death is the end with no recourse.
