Port-au-Prince.– The Haitian government announced more than 111,000 people died in last week's devastating earthquake as the
search-and-rescue phase comes to an end, the United Nations confirmed late Friday
The 111,481 dead is the
first precise death toll for the magnitude 7.0 quake that struck Haiti on
January 12, and it is considered
the worst death toll from an earthquake since the 2004 Asian tsunami,
and the second-highest death toll from an earthquake in more than three
decades, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian
Affairs (OCHA) said.some 609,000
people have also been left homeless in and around Port-au-Prince, while some
200,000 people have crammed into buses, nearly swamped ferries and set
out even on foot to escape the ruined capital.
In a related development, as Haitians are fleeing, relatives said they pulled an 84-year-old woman from the
wreckage of her home yesterday, 10 days after the quake, but
some teams were giving up the search and efforts focused on expanding
aid for survivors.

Martha , I see that your finally learning to wield your sword my friend , but you need to keep that flag up a little higher . I suppose for clarification purposes as well as the ever so occasional need to humble myself , its worth a line or 2 to say that I am in no way trying to play Carlos Mencia at a time like this . Yes, I admit that at times I can be what atleast appears to be an egotistical , sarcastic insensitive a$$*%le but I assure you that is nothing more than one of my many character flaws and not a heart thats motivated by hate .
Furthermore Martha, I want you to know for the record that my time spent on this forum is something I do for enjoyment and intellectual stimulation , not because I really believe that my thoughts ,opinions and convictions are changing the D.R or the world at large and as much as I love putting the gloves on ,I truly mean no disrespect nor hurt to anyone else that makes regular contributions to my reading enjoyment on this forum .

I kind of remember a certain generoso stating that the death toll in Haiti was being exaggerated ..thank goodness for the people here who have the sensitivity to refrain from making frivolous remarks about the Haiti tragedy .. I remember that the cry for help that was considered to be exaggerated even when people were lying under rubble slowly dying and I remember the scorn that people had here for others who relied on their faith...Why is it that this board can bring out the worst in some people who think that rudeness is a form of pugilistic activity .. it is type of Dominican behaviour I never see here outside this board..,,thank goodness

ugh that sucks! Why so many people had to die and there are still alot of people missing! Why Haiti I would ask but im not going to. God does everything for a reason! Wooh thank you jesus my family is all alive and well and there in cap haitian except for 4 or a lil more than that. The terror of not knowing if your family is alive or dead! Wooh jesus that terror is gone now cause I know god protected them. Si we famim ap vive vye frem gras bondieu ki sou nou tout!
