President Rene Preval made his first trip to the Presidential palace to personally see the damage.
Port-au-Prince.– Haiti's quake death toll officially stands at 180,000, but it is feared that it could be much higher, a government spokesperson said, adding
that new victims were being found every day.
Haitian President Rene Preval Saturday apologized
for his long silence during the two and a half weeks since the massive
earthquake that destroyed the capital city. Haitian elections
scheduled for the end of February were to be postponed for two years,
officials said.
In his first interview with a domestic
broadcaster, TVC, Preval answered repeated complaints by Haitians that
he had not been a visible presence in the rubble of the destroyed city. "A president is also only a human being and the worst pain is silent," he said.
Preval
said he only escaped injury on January 12 because he had left the
presidential palace earlier than usual, right before it was crushed by
the quake. Instead, he was at his residence in the gardens, playing
with one of his grandchildren: "My first reflex was to protect the
child with my body."
He also described how he had taken a motorcycle taxi through the city, to get an overview of the extent of damage. "I felt defeated and powerless in face of the catastrophe," he said. Preval criticized the lack of consultation with the government and
coordination among countries bringing a flood of aid after the January
12 earthquake.

I ,for one, can imagine the total feeling of hopelessness that the President must have felt ,without a home and with many government buildings in ruins and very few employees at work ..he gave an accurate assessment of the damage and loss of life very quickly and seemed to obtain much help from overseas countries and from the DR. The earlier criticism here of him for exaggerating is now seen as baseless so I will not pass any judgment on him.

A good leader posesses a mental toughness. He always keeps a cool head , remains composed in times of crisis so he can find solutions and give directions to get everybody out of a difficut situation.

Many Haitians from the "Mushroom Spores" AKA: Dispora, didn't like Preval because of his close ties with the DR, they were yearning for a caco-caliente like Aristide to declare open war on the DR.

Haiti was in pathetic shape before this tragedy. I don't see Preval and the government doing nearly enough and putting off elections for 2 years doesn't help either. With a little luck a new leader will emerge from this tragedy to bring Haiti back to a country where it's citizens can earn a living wage legally without having to leave the country to do it. They deserve better than they are being treated now. The aid took too long to get where it needed to be and now we have more red tape causing the killing of innocent people especially the children.
Anyone caught trafficking in illegal orphans should be given the death sentence for taking advantage during this tragedy.
It is time for a new beginning my Haitian neighbors. Seize the moment and bring good from this sorrow.

Etienne allow me to finish the sentence... Swim out of your povety... Or go to the DR where they'll care more for you than haiti...

If the very first day after the tragedy the president of Haiti had been on the radio saying everything was pretty much screwed. Hang on best you can stay as calm as possible and cooperate with the international aid as it arrived then at least the appearance of some kind of leadership would have been in place.
But now what has happened is he was awol but wants to delay elections for two years. I would sympathize for six months better yet three months.

Preval is a sad example of a president who lacks the basic skills of a leader. It should be humiliating for him and his followers to see Leonel take the lead in front of all media assesing the situation and asking for help.

Preval found it hard to pop back after the quake. He has a long history with cancer. In 1995, he switched from US doctors and hospitals to Cuban doctors and hospitals. In his weakened condition, the eathquake shook him up.
Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive assumed most of load on organization and administration. Preval went after aid and he has done well getting aid.
Now, Preval is looking at the State.
Unless the old legislature can pop back from the quake, the 2-year postpponement of legislative elections results in an increased concentration of power in the executive branch under Preval. But this concentration of power is not an unconstitutional concentration. And, this concentration may be just what Haiti needs to get something done.
Preval does not seem to know what to do with the apparatus of state power -- the army and police; so, he relies on foreign forces before and after the quake. US imperialists want to control Haiti's security forces.

How can you call yourself ateo 2010 ?
Many atheists(ateos en Espanol) feel that the idea of God as presented by the major religions is essentially self-contadictory, and that is logically impossible that such a God could exist.
That makes atheism a philosophy.

My Diamond.
I will not second guess anything thing that any official did in the first few days after the quake. I will criticize the lack of action period. One of the things the the US navy teaches about shipboard emergencies is that more times than not the wrong action is better than no action.
The Haitian people needed the appearance of leadership even though there was really nothing he could have done but wait for the international help to come. The just telling his people that on the radio would have been some comfort to say yes we are in touch and coordinating.
The bottom line is if every surviving government leader was doing something visible even if not the best action it would have been motivating to the rest of the population and reassuring. To have the appearance of just waiting for help that may or may not come is not what was needed. This situation is way beyond anything that can be imagined.

when you have 3% of a country population monopolysing exclusively 80 % of the economy of the country , in times of crisis when all counties in the world are mobilising their resources and their man power to aid ,you need to investigate what has the Haitain elite contributed to Haiti.
Here are the surnames of some of the bilonnaires in Haiti that have acquired their fortune by not paying decent salaries to their workers and by having their private ports so no to pay customs taxes: acra. madsens. baussan.apaid, bigio, vital . vorbes, berhmanns, brantd, kouri, loukas, sada ect.
Now, tell me if any of these wealthy surnames names in that sea of poverty in Haiti is associated with any schools, any roads, any healh care clinics for the poor. Tell me if any of these surnames sound French or Creole to you ?
