Nassau.– The Royal Bahamas Defense Force took to Nassau a Dominican fishing vessel and a crew of 33 men who were accused of illegal, the Bahamas press reported.
According to the report, the 70ft steel hulled motor vessel "Adrian I" of the Dominican Republic
was intercepted in the rich fishing grounds of Columbus Bank, east of
Ragged Island in the southeast Bahamas.
United States Coast Guard Cutter Pea Island intercepted the boat with a
Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) officer "shiprider" onboard. But as they boarded the Adrian I, some of the crew out fishing in several skiffs attempted to flee into international waters.
The Coast Guard gave chase and apprehended 33 men, taking control of their boats and haul of seafood.

The Dominican's or the Bahamian Thugs.
The Bahamas dirty little secret: Little Mud Cay is full of refugee's in despair. Mainly Dominican an d Haitians who are exploit into doing the lowest of all jobs that they have to pay bribe money so the Bahaman Government looks the other way. Living roughly 9 miles to the east of the "STREAM" the bodies wash up all the time of people trying to live the American dream. The Bahamas is/has/always will be corrupt!
As far as the fisherman and the fishing vessel goes, just set back and watch how the Bahaman Government becomes the THUGS when you ask how much money they want to release the vessel and the men, and don't be surprised at the sticker price.

Bahama authorities keep hijacking Dominican fishing boats who maybe poaching miles from their waters, just in case.
They confiscate the boats, impose heavy fines, jail and sometimes even burn the ships to the ground.
We Dominicans have to learn from them how to treat the illegal trespassers in OUR territory.

Been all over the Bahamas and never heard of Mud Cay until now. Just where is it? As for illegal fishing, yes the Dominicans are pretty blatant about it, also Cubans straight out of Cuban ports. They are fishing in shallow water on the banks, no question of whose territory. The picture on the post bears no resemblance to a Dominican fishing vessel. Photo is of a long liner while these are using mother vessels and yolas with one compressor/skiff man and two divers. These divers break every rule in the tables of diving and decompression and most live to tell about it with few exceptions. They should be studied to see how they are relatively immune to the 'bends'. Crews are hardy men trying to make a living for all that, the owners don't go along to share risks only profits spare the sorrow for them.

The D.R. is totally fished out. Zero conservation except for the Punta Cana area.
Durring the Veda, off season for lobster the supermarkets and restaurants are selling tiny and out of season lobster and the state doe's nothing about it.
Haiti destroyed the land and the D.R. fishermen are destroying the sea. The new desert!
Laws with no enforcement!
From: United States
yes, Grosero. blame the Bahamas. it is the other guys fault, as usual. the Bahamas is not the only country fighting against illegal fishing boats from the DR. every so often, they get hauled in by the Jamaican government, also. had the proper conservation methods been adhered to, maybe there would be fish in this area. as a wise poster said, we have done to the seas what Haiti has done to the trees.
From: United States
why is the United States enforcing Bahamian fishing laws?
From: United States
good question. since it interests you, maybe you could research the mutual agreement treaties that the Bahamas might have with the US, such as territorial patrols.
From: United States
caprice, i just did the legwork for you...........
Section 1903(c)(1)(E) provides: "[A] `vessel subject to the jurisdiction of the United States' includes — ... (E) a vessel located in the territorial waters of another nation, where the nation consents to the enforcement of United States law by the United States." 46 U.S.C. app. § 1903(c)(1)(E)
From: United States
"where the nation consents to the enforcement of United States law by the United States"
this statue allows the US to enforce its laws within the territory of another nation. The US Coast Guard was enforcing Bahamian fishing laws within the territorial waters of the Bahamas, a British Commonwealth nation.

makes no difference, caprice. the agreement means that the USA can stand in and enforce the same laws it would have enforced, had the vessel been in US waters. that is not a unilateral situation. the Bahamians must have some treaty in place to allow for this, given their shortage of naval firepower. maybe they have a similar treaty with Great Britain...i just do not know.
