TUCSON, Arizona.– Over 2,000 undocumented immigrants have died in the last decade on the border between Arizona and Mexico, including 253 in fiscal year 2010, according to a new report.

The report released by the Arizona Human Rights Coalition showed that from Sept. 30, 2000, to Sept. 30, 2010, a total of 2,104 illegal aliens died trying to cross the Arizona desert.

The years when the greatest number of deaths occurred were 2005, with 282 fatalities, followed by fiscal year 2010 with 253. Coalition figures are based on data from coroners’ offices in counties along the Mexican border.

The deceased immigrants’ countries of origin include Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic.

It is a shame these people do not respect American immigration laws. They choose a dangerous fate.

Ever try to get a US visa??? Costs a months avg. salary and all you get is a "declined".

My wife (Dominican) has accompanied me 3 times to Canada (even though she has had 5 Canadian visas...did not run and hide in Montreal!!!) and once on her own to Italy over the past 4 years. We have requested a US visitor's visa 2 times now.....declined. Great for US tourism!!!

Odd that a country solely built upon immigration from other countries, is now not welcoming the outside world.

US should be taken to international criminal court.
US urgently needs immigrant labor but instead of issuing work permits it makes the immigrants die crossing the border.
US evil empire!

No the US should not have filed suit against Arizona! The USA does provide work permits. Just not millions of them. If you want to try and walk the desert go ahead but there are risks, too bad so sad, let the come in legally then no problem,

The problem for dominicans is that a few have ruined it for the many.

Sure they do. Thousands of legal visa holders come over for visits every day.

You can come for a temporary stay just as soon as you can prove that you have a vested interest in going back when your visa is up. What's wrong with that?

...and about being "built upon immigration". That was over a century ago when there were vast areas of unpopulated or underpopulated land. That time is long over, get over it.

US has millions of undocumented workers and needs them to survive.

To make them undertake a hazedous border journey then give them jobs when they arrive is at best hypocracy and at worst criminal.
Even senators take undocumented workers as maids. Its a form of exploitation and near slavery because they and their children can be deported when reported at a moments notice.

Major companies such as Tyson have hired undocumented workers for years - many allege this has lowered wages for all by 10 -30%.

Farmers in many areas hire undocumented workers. They do this without any hinderance from the authorities.

So why do we have these stupid posters - these good hard working people that are needed by the US economy should be given documents immediately. Many pay taxes and have driving licences.US hypocracy - people die crossing the border - employers hire them in millions without hinderance - they form a huge 'slave rate' army.
