PROVIDENCE,—Forty year-old Angel Taveras, a Dominican-American lawyer, became the state’s first elected Latino mayor Tuesday, trouncing independent Jonathan P. Scott to assume the seat being vacated by Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline, who won the 1st Congressional District seat the same night, Rhode Island media report.

The Democrat Taveras’ victory, which seemed all but assured after his September primary victory, came on an election that also marked a changing of the guard in the 15-member City Council. Seven new council members will take office in January, following the decision by a number of long-serving council members not to seek reelection and surprise losses by other incumbents in the primary, news source projo.com reports.

It said among the significant winners Tuesday was 21-year-old Democrat Davian Sanchez, who emerged from a three-way race in Ward 11 (Upper South Providence) to become the youngest elected councilman in city history.

“At 10:25 p.m., with about 77 percent of polls reporting, Taveras announced his victory. With 98 percent of polls reporting at 10:55 p.m., he had more than 82 percent of the vote,” projo.com said.

Taveras, speaking at the state Democratic Party gathering at the Biltmore, thanked his mother, Amparo “Milagro” Ovalles, a Dominican immigrant who had raised him and his two immediate siblings largely on her own while working at local factories.

Now the GOP controls the house, and soon they will have a Republican President; it looks like Barry Soatero is on his way out, even though he's done an ok job, but lacks leadership.
Adios Nancy Pelosi, and see you later Mr Harry Reid.

I think he'll be ok, Providence has a huge latino population and most of them are dominicans. If he manage to get his own people under control he'll be ok, providence is a very small city so there's really not much to do there.

Yeah......sure...........like Angel has nothing to do.......Oh come on now, for Christ sake !! You make it sound as if he is going to sit around all day and make paper airplanes.

Just remember it is always better to be the head of a mouse rather then the tail of the Lion.

Congratulations to Angel Taveras. Congratulations to the dominican community in Providence. Congratulations to Amparo Ovalle for being a wonderful mother, and overcoming all the hurdles.
It is a great day for the Dominican Republic as well.

That is great news! First we have Mayor Dr. Alex Blanco from Passaic, New Jersey. Second, we have William Lantigua from Lawrence, Massachusetts. And now, we have Angel Taveras from Providence, Rhode Island! Well done! Soon we will have a Dominican-American president! LOL!

eriliza are you serious, a dominican president jajaja. but none the less it is a good thing for us latinos in the states.

Danny,

It is a major city given the fact that it is the main city for a state, is just not big in size but is huge to rhode island which is full of fugitive dominicans from new york lol. i love there.

Don't get carried away - these individuals first and only interest should be promoting and helping their respective constituents in the USA. The fact they are of Dominican origin should be of no significance.

dominicans in the UK damn, domlon i agree with you their origin shouldn't be significant and by law it is not, but a hispanic candidate can only win in a zone thats is floated with hispanics other wise race will play a big factor. A dominican candidate has a higher chance of becoming mayor of new york city than baltimore, maryland.

Great news. I have family who lives in Providence. Dominicans have quitely built a nice community over there. An often untold story about Doms in the U.S. is that they have built nice middle class communities in places like Providence. People often only think of doms in urban places when they think of them here in the U.S.
