Mar del Plata, Argentina.– President Leonel Fernandez Friday highlighted the importance of education as a tool to reduce inequality during the 20th Ibero-American Summit held in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

According to Fernandez, there must be a connection between education and economic growth. "Education is essential to protecting the growing mobility of our society," he added.

Fernandez also downplayed the impact of economic crisis in the region, saying Latin America would soon recover to pre-crisis level as "it has maintained its macroeconomic stability and certain growth."

The two-day summit, bringing together leaders of 18 Latin American countries and their counterparts from Spain, Portugal and Andorra, will mainly focus on the themes of "education and social inclusion."

A sign of being in office too long is short term memory loss. Just last week he was giving all the reasons why they could not support their obligation to education in this country...now...it appears to be important.

It is only important because influential people who invest here have basically said, if you don't do something to improve the education level of potential employees, we have little reason to invest n your country...not to mention the small but effective protests by those who believe this country has a future.

Sounds like double standard to me.

Back in your country Mr Presindent, we're asking for at least 4% of the budget to materialize that essential education you're talking about down there in Argentina.

as u sit in your cell alone u will have a long time to rethink what u where involved in. away from your family, friend's, and most important your freedom is taken from you.
what price is your freedom worth?, is their a number you can place on this?.
for my self i rather be poor then to sit for many years in a jail cell. at least one can do as he or she wants or needs to do in their life.
their are 1,000 of dominicans sitting in jail cells in the states.
rethink your life and your acutions their is no amount of money in the world that is worth your freedom the drug business is not real its short lived for most. in the end all is taken from you and your family..

Anyone ever been through the Dominican school system? I have in Santiago and while it is better than in most other cities it is quite abysmal even there. Most schools in the country for your average child last at most 3 to 4 hours a day in a public school. Lately they are lucky if the school provided milk is anything close to milk and doesn't get them sick drinking it.

If you want your child to have better education you need to pay more. For most Dominicans this won't happen.

Most Dominicans don't ever finish high school and many of those who do finish do so as fully grown adults having gone back to school.

I suggest anyone interested in the Dominican school system actually visit some of the schools our children go to you will be amazed. Start with a few public schools and then try a few private ones. The differences are astounding and even more amazing is how poor the overall educational system is by comparison to most other countries.

These kids deserve better!

Leonel has become a lost case.

Why on earth does he keeps talking about something he is not willing to do anything about?

The stupid part about him trying to keep the education topic alive is almost laughable since he has done nothing. Why talk about it if nothing will be done about it?

why talk about education in another country. and in your country you can even give the children what the are by law entitle to. he is bullshitting everyone , he does not care about our children getting a good eduction. he only care about how much money he is going to make. around 2% of the education budget is going into they pocket.

I always tease Ricardolito about the fact that he comes to a battle of wits, with me, unarmed.

Here's a case where LF went to a Latin American summit regarding education with nothing but shame.

Before I came to live in the D.R., I used to think highly of LF's extemporaneous interventions in the Ibero-American Conferences, along such international luminaries like Julio Maria Sanguinetti, president of Uruguay, and our always incomparable Dr. Fidel Castro Ruz, president of the Revolutionary Government of Cuba. After residing for about a year here, sad to say, I don't think history is going to judge LF very favorably. When he travels to Cuba he gives a pseudo-revolutionary speech which our streetwise Cuban brothers can see through, a mile away. In Europe he holds hands with heads of State, presenting the D.R. as some sort of a perfect place for investments. And worst of all, he holds hands with Uncle Sam, begging as usual from the crumbs off the table, from such dubious donors as USAID, which always have strings attached. A good Dominican friend has already warned me, that you can't play around with the people's patience. These neocolonial monarchs can't sense the people's heart

If it were just the 4% education issue that LF, is trying to dance around with, with his typical silver-tongued style-add to that the dysfunctional public health system, the default of the ARS´s to provide proper health care for teachers which plunk their paltry earnings into that insurance system, communities throughout the island which constantly harp about lack of proper infrastructure, services, etc., institutionalized corruption from the PLD, and complicity with the criminal Canadian mining companies which rape the environment and violate human/labor rights, it´s a miracle the current political system will survive. Again, you can´t monkey around with the people´s patience forever. Some daydreamers think that April, 1965, will never happen again. Dream on dreamers. :-)

danny 00 , I am not sure where you got your figures for Dominicans in prison in the USA, but it is not correct .. There are about 1.1 million Dominicans living in the USA. the majority in New York. and the average percentage of Latins in prison is 2.4% of their population and there have been numerous reports that Dominicans have the highest percentage so if you just take 2.5% of 1.1 million , you get 27,500. Hope my maths are correct . There are about 2.3 million people in prison in the USA and about 27 % are not citizens of the USA...source ,,department of Justice statistics .

All politicians tell lies and looks as if LF has now realised that if he wants his party to have electoral success , he needs to spend more money on red hot areas such as education Let us wait and see but I hope we can up the standard of the teaching colleges and then the wages for teachers so we have a chance of improving the overall level of education in the schools
