Havana.– A magnitude-5.4 earthquake hit eastern Cuba early Friday, rattling nerves but causing no reported injuries or damage.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the
temblor hit just after 7 a.m. Friday, centered about 55
kilometers southeast of Baracoa, near the easternmost tip of the
island, just 255 kilometers from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where a January 12 quake
destroyed much of the city and killed countless thousands.
"Yes
we felt it. We felt it strong," said Maira Legra, whose son runs a home
offering lodging to tourists in the colonial beach-side city of
Baracoa. "There was no problem. I was in bed because it was early, but
I didn't get up."

Good thing Cuba can count on her world class medical expertise, Sean "Da" Penn-Head, Hollywood liberal bunch, Hugo-a-go-go, Belial, Vivacuba, Josean"Da"Chosen and maybe Jolie's follies.
TO EXCLUDE THE EVIL "IMPERIALIST PIGS" the US, Cuba can now steal and profit all by herself.

I am glad our Cuban brothers and sisters sustained little if any damage, and no apparent loss of life.
Perhaps building construction in Cuba is compliant to accepted norms, as evidenced by lack of real damage, unlike in DR, where all we got is the assurance of a non-credible source under government pressure.
While I am a conservative and avoud capitalist, I must give credit to the Cuban nation for its demonstrated resilience, self-sufficiency; also, for leading our hemisphere in literacy.

This just shows that the geologists have very little anticipation and how it is important it is for the caribbean countries to have good building codes and emergency plans .

GLORMA,
How true ! Those who have little have a little less to loose and part of the blessedness of possessing nothing is the depth of character it produces in nation as well as the resilience and self -sufficiency you alluded to . Remember the Santiago y PP quake of 2003?
It was 6.7 and lasted the same amount of time the PAP quake, how many buildings felt? how many lives were lost?
What do you know about cuban building codes? this was not a earthquake, this was 5.4 tremor.

Platanos,
You might need to work on your reading comprehension just a little.
I wrote: "Perhaps building construction in Cuba is compliant to accepted norms, as evidenced by lack of real damage, unlike in DR, where all we got is the assurance of a non-credible source under government pressure." The operative word here is "perhaps" which is not in the affirmative; it's used more as a question than a statement. Nowhere in this statement do I affirm that this is true. My intent was to criticize credibility of Dominican who asserted building safety.
Furthermore, when I referred to code, it meant the internationally accepted code-intended for buildings to withstand a designated earthquake magnitude. Perhaps neither one of us understands what Cuba meets.
As for POP & Santiago's earthquakes, I know there was damage in POP, at least at the cathedral there was. Don't know much about Santiago. Thank God there was no great loss of physical structures or human lives.

Dr. Strangelove,
Because of your fair and critical analysis is that you are true conservative in the vein of Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley and not the modern flavor of the month conservatives.
Obviously your upbringing and scientifically trained mind allows you to be objective and follow facts where they lead you. Not like many so called modern conservatives and commentators here on DT that try to lead the facts to their predetermined conclusions.
Tolerance and fairness are virtues; both of which you appear to have in abundance.

platanos,
You cannot compare a 6.7 magnitude much deeper in the ground to a 7 magnitude at 10 km deep! I wouldn't take that as an assurance that the buildings are that much safer. Some are of course but many are not and would not stand more.

Josean ..I belive that most students were taught and are still taught in the better schools that there is a northern and southern hemisphere divided by the equator but I believe that there is some new schooling that suggests that there is an eastern and western as well but in general conversation and writings I believe that when you ask what hemisphere a country is in , the reply is north or south .

Dean Josean,
For as long as I can remember, we've always talked about the four quadrants of the compass when discussing hemispheres. Clearly, our neck of the woods is dead smack in Western Hemisphere, not Northern or Southern or Eastern, but Western Hemisphere.
With DR being closer to Equator, defining world in terms of just Northern and Southern Hemisphere would totally exclude places such as DR.
