NEW YORK. - The New York State Senate will officially declare Dominican Heritage Day for the first time on February 23, during the session at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the State Capital, Albany.
The Senate resolution is an initiative of the State senator the reverend Rubén Diaz, who for decades has been an activist for Dominicans in the Bronx.
Diaz said it’s the first time in history that the New York State Senate dedicates a day to the Dominican heritage. "The Dominican community and its residents will be officially recognized by the State Senate, to honor its great contributions to the political, educational, religious, institutional, cultural and economic development.

Next month, we should do Ethiopia, Somalia, the Philippines, El Salvador, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama,...............Bulgaria, Georgia, Tajikistan, etc.
Why are we so deserving of the special recognition?
Let's start achieving meaningful accomplishments in significant numbers in all important areas [not sports!], including: medicine; literature; engineering and science; social sciences; etc. Yes, we have a few, but not enough to be worthy of bragging rights. As a goal, I would set Asians as a target, and try to get within 50 % of their achievements in 10 years. That would be an accomplishment we could all be proud of. Look, it isn't entirely impossible and the Jews have been doing very well in all these areas for many years.
Anyway, these would be the kinds of accomplishment meritorious of praise. I really don't need to itemize much the attributes we are currently famous for here in US, and they are not exactly meritorious.

Perez,
With all due respect, what exactly have Dominicans in NY, or USA for that matter, done of significance and to help mankind, to merit this recognition?
Empty and worthless awards of this type only contribute to demean us, polarize us and promote racial hatred and resentment. Why not just take "walk and carry a big stick" sort of attitude, be quiet about it? Why do we need recognition? Is that why we do everything? We should not endeavor to undertake any activities with the expectation of thanks and recognition; if we do, then we are doing it for all the wrong reasons.
You know, is like the person who is smart: he doesn't need to be told so, especially by lesser beings.
People who seek recognition, in my opinion, have low self esteem and crave attention. Actually, I think this fits us to a tee.

Zolia,
I am not especially familiar with Francis Mendez. What has he/she exactly accomplished of great significance? What in his accomplishments elevates him above rest, expectations of his stature in government, etc.
We, as Dominicans and Latins in general, need to recognize that we are effectively guests in this country, and that this country has its unique language: English, and culture and we need to respect those facts. We need to assimilate, not change it into what we left behind, escaped. If it was so good that it must be preserved, then why did we leave it in the first place?
I don't ever want to make another call and hear: "To continue in Spanish pres 1; for English, press 2". This is wrong and totally disrespectful and really demeans us and conveys a message that we are not smart enough as those other immigrants, who didn't demand translation and assimilated and became CEO's, congressmen, astronauts, scientists, etc.
Let's compete on leveled field.

We must be careful with our arrogance, for we might expose our ignorance.
Fist of all, I am a pretty accomplished scientist myself, with 40 patents to my name and several more pending. I am a member of the Inventors Hall of Fame, class of 2004. I am a leader in the area of alternative energy, including compressed natural gas propulsion and fuel cell.
Please do not delude yourself into somehow believing that you are somehow a better Dominican or a prouder one. Pride which is not based on meaningful accomplishments is meaningless. Heck, gangsters in LA are very proud people, but what does that pride mean? Is it something we should emulate? I think not.
I see PRicans all the time being proud of I don't know what, when most of them cannot even locate their island on a map. Heck, most of them are effectively citizens without a country, for they were born here: 3rd generation welfare recipients! Is that something to be proud of? I think not.

I see similarly in the dreadful Dominican Pride Parade. I see lots of people being drunk and loud and practicing thuggery and littering and, frankly, I don't feel very proud about that.
You are totally missing the call of my cry and, instead, hiding behind a curtain of pride that I hope is on solid foundation and par with the notable accomplishments of other races.
Please understand clearly that my goal is to push us to compete on leveled field and to be judged strictly on the basis and significance of our accomplishments and contributions, without special considerations or false pretenses or allowance for being a minority.
Personally, I would never accept an award premised on my minority status-ever, under no circumstances! I've earned everything accorded to me, on equal footing and on the strength of their merit. That's the way it must be, if we are to have any real relevance.

BTW, you've taken some liberties with your thinly disguised insults, so a couple of corrections are in order. First of all, my daughter is a performing artist on Broadway in NYC. My aunt was an opera singer who performed at the New York Metropolitan House. My cousin is an orchestra leader in Miami and is featured regularly on TV; I also have a cousin in the Venezuelan wing of the family who is also one of foremost orchestra leaders in that country. My PRican wing of family has way too many musicians to mention. I'll leave those still in France out because I am not close to them.
I play the saxophone; my son the guitar and keyboard-he has his own band in Boston; my wife the flute; my daughter, in addition to being an actress, also plays the violin and has performed at Carnegie Hall.

This person is incapable of keeping track of her overt insults, put-downs of other people.
First, she attacks my parents and up-bringing, then takes exception to my rebuttals.
All those transgressions and she has less than 10 posts! She clearly knows how to make a grand entrance! No doubt, she will make lots of friends. Too bad DT annals are paved with corpses of the likes who preceded her.
Now we'll be deluged with psycho-babble and such, from this righteous being.
She escaped to Miami with lots of money from DR, purchased property there....wonder what type of business is so lucrative in DR?
My family left for political reasons, for parents were prominently at Ciudad Nueva in 1965. Many of my parent's colleagues left for PR at time, and we already had family there. Juan Bosch and other notable ones were there as well. We still own a 65-bed motel in San Juan, PR.

I'll give you benefit of doubt for now and hope that, upon careful reflection, you might retract some of your comments, especially those regarding my parents.

But since we haven't done squat, we don't deserve nothing. I definitely agree with u about such showing of pride and throwing it to other people's face would promote racism and stuff. It makes it look as if we were acting like spoiled kids demanding attention. With the reputation that dominicans have worldwide(very negative mind u) I feel like Hiding! this has to stop, I hear no other people demand as much attention as dominicans.
