Santiago de Chile.– A huge magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, killing
at least 78 people, producing powerful aftershocks and triggering a
tsunami, agencies all over the world are reporting.
According to President Michelle Bachelet, there were
78 confirmed deaths and more are possible. Telephone and power
lines were down, making it difficult to make an early assessment of the
damage, but serious damage was reported in two southern cities.
The US
Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the
city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET).
Chilean
television and radio stations said several buildings collapsed in the
city of Curico and that there was damage to buildings in the historic
center of the capital Santiago, about 200 miles north of the epicenter.

This earthquake occurred at the
boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. The two
plates are converging at a rate of 80 mm per year. The earthquake
occurred as thrust-faulting on the interface between the two plates,
with the Nazca plate moving down and landward below the South American
plate.
Coastal Chile has a history of very large earthquakes. Since
1973, there have been 13 events of magnitude 7.0 or greater. The
February 27 shock originated about 230 km north of the source region of
the magnitude 9.5 earthquake of May, 1960 – the largest instrumentally
recorded earthquake in the world. This magnitude 9.5 earthquake killed
1655 people in southern Chile and unleashed a tsunami that crossed the
Pacific, killing 61 people in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines.
Approximately 870 km to the north of the February 27 earthquake is the
source region of the magnitude 8.5 earthquake of November, 1922. This
great quake significantly impacted central Chile, killing several
hundred people and causing severe property damage. The 1922 quake
generated a 9-meter local tsunami that inundated the Chile coast near
the town of Coquimbo; the tsunami also crossed the Pacific, washing
away boats in Hilo harbor, Hawaii.
The magnitude 8.8 earthquake of
February 27, 2010 ruptured the portion of the South American subduction
zone separating these two massive historical earthquakes.
A large vigorous aftershock sequence can be expected from this earthquake.

Considering that this quake was FIVE HUNDRED TIMES more powerful than the quake in Haiti, where 200,000 people died, to only have a couple of hundred dead is a miracle, and a tribute to proper construction methods, and REAL inspection.

Sirens in Hawaii for Tsunami Alert, and Phillipinas, in last hour Tsunami hit the coast of Northeast Polynesia , Marquesas islands, and Tahiti with minimal demage.
Waves were two meters high.
Caribbean and Central America were not affected with Earquakes today, except this week 4.9 above the St. John Island in small Antilles, 3.7 in La Romana and 2.5 under Saona Island, also two of 4.7 in Haiti. These small under 4 are normal Earthquakes, like 8 small ones above Porto Rico.

the chileans are more prepared for quakes and it was at a deeper depth.

Faith means to believe something without any supporting evidence. If you believe that God doesn't exist you certainly have evidence to substantiate that belief as you cannot see,touch,hear,feel or smell God. This means that faith in there not being a God isn't required.

Eternal life "hereafter" is permanent existence of soul without body. This isolated soul is not "life" i.e., union of body and soul. Since this isolated soul is indestructible, we shouldn't be grateful to anyone for the soul's continued existence. "Hereafter," we 're stuck with the soul.
Relatively low annoucned loss of life is testament to deep resolve, success of Chilean nation to define and enforce construction codes established to deal with strong earthquakes to which area is prone.
