WASHINGTON.- Sonia Pierre, the controversial Haitian immigrants’ rights activist in Dominican Republic, yesterday received the Woman of Courage Award, together with nine other women who stand out in the fight for human rights.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton headed the activity in the State Department on Monday to mark the Day of the Woman.
"If Sonia Pierre could protest and demand better conditions for working immigrants at the age of 13, which she was arrested for, then none of you are too young to make a difference," said first lady Michelle Obama, present in the ceremony.
Pierre, who the Central Electoral Board declared a foreigner and whose real name is Sonia Pie, is the founder of the Movement of Dominican-Haitian Women (Mudha) which defends the descendants of Haitians in Dominican Republic, including better access to health, education, housing and labor conditions.
The activist, who already received the Robert F. Kennedy prize for Human Rights, led the denunciations which led to a 2005 conviction by the Inter-American Court for Human Rights, based in Costa Rica, ordering redress by the Dominican Government to two girls of Haitian ancestry, whom were denied nationality.
Mudha has promoted the construction of houses for Haitian immigrants, as well as campaigns against adolescent pregnancy and the prevention of diseases such as AIDS.
Many Dominicans view Pierre with the same animosity as the also foreigners and controversial priests Christopher Hartley and Pierre Rouquoy, whose campaigns sought to obtain economic sanctions against the country for its alleged violations of Haitians’ rights.
The other women who received the prize are from Afghanistan, Cyprus, Iran, Kenya, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria and Zimbabwe.

I know this is a waste of time b/c most of these yahoos won't know this reference, but Buche you can also throw in Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed." In that book Freire talks about how "oppressed" people buy-into myths and stereotype and are ignorant of their oppression, and when someone tries to tell them that there's a more humane reality, they usually "crucify" that person. Just take for example many people who tried to improve the world - Jesus, Galileo, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, you name it... these iconoclasts were persecuted just like these yahoos are persecuting MUDHA and your sentiments.
Freire also says that "the oppressed," instead of changing the dynamics that dehumanizes them, prefer to dehumanize others, in order to feel "liberated." I propose that that's another thing we're seeing here. ClaveDigital has an excellent Q&A qith Sonia. I'd encourage people to read it. Maybe, just maybe you'll see that Sonia is simply a Person (which in and of itself guarantees her fundamental rights) who has suffered extreme discrimination, and is fighting so that other dominicans of haitian decent, like her children and her grandchildren, don't face similar discrimination.
Each person, regardless of ancestry has fundamental rights, and when those rights are violated by other people and by gov'ts, then it is praise-worthy to standup and fight discrimination and oppression.
