José Peralta, Hiram Monserrate
NEW YORK.- A fierce electoral battle is escalating in Queens County Senatorial District 13, pitting Dominican-American assemblyman Jose Peralta, who has moved there from Brooklyn, in an attempt to dislodge the unwavering Hiram Monserrate, who was recently ousted from Albany’s legislature on a domestic violence conviction.
Peralta faces activists and organizations who demand a probe for his alleged embezzlement of money from a presumably ghost organization which he created and managed by his mother and other close political associates. Monserrate, who no longer has the democrats’ blessings, and was expelled from his senate seat together with the republicans, defied his former party’s well-greased “machinery” to try to recover his legislative seat, warning that only his constituents can remove him from the post.
Some surveys including the network Univisión place voter’ intention at 50-50, whereas The New York Times says the results may be the squeakiest in District 13’s history.
The elections are dated for the March 16 this month by executive decision governor David Paterson, who according to the law, had to summon them to necessarily fill the lazy vacancy by the Puerto Rican/American.
Peralta could’ve easily won the post but Monserrate didn’t sit still and launched the challenge to return, by creating an independent movement “The town decides.”

How dare you libel a fine human being like Hiram Monserrate? He was not accused of punching his girlfriend. He was accused of slashing her face with a bottle, leaving her with 20 stitches.

And the other guy is a cheating, lying scum bag and a thief so choose your poison.
P.S." MonseRAT" has already been expelled from the NY Senate, there was never a need or consideration for any impeachment process. An impeachment is a legal statement of charges where the accused then faces a legislative vote to determine innocence or guilt. "MonseRat" was found guilty of a misdemeanor assault via a criminal trial which then allowed the NY Senate body to vote on his expulsion and he was cast out by a 53 to 8 vote, thus opening the door to a special election on March 16th.

Uptown, Downtown, North or South, they are all the same. Some are worse than others and your choices are limited to the lesser of two evils, no matter where you are. Good to hear from you brother J, how are things going with the Metro? Did they make the direct non-stop to China route yet or was that phase 3?

A long long long time ago, there was a time when men were actually geared towards truth. One of those men wrote this quote below:
"La política no es una especulación; es una Ciencia más pura y la más digna, después de la Filosofía, de ocupar las inteligencias nobles."
That man was Juan Pablo Duarte. Even before this, Plato wrote of the need for there to be philosopher kings ruling the republic. More so, politics in general is the most divine science that exists today. It is also no wonder that because of this that it is so easily corrupted and being so exalted that its damages are far worst when used for its negative rather than its positives.
Politics is the science of humanity. It allows humans to co-exist and everything that revolves around your daily life is a dilemma under which Politics is always preoccupied. However, as is obvious we do not need to look too far to see how ugly it has become. How this science has turned into a dogma. A wasted science to the ve

That was an excellent and well presented narrative Dominica. Sadly today's political machinations are not of the exacting standards and repute inherent to the sagacity of Plato or the Nobility of Juan Pablo Duarte. Today's political leaders are far removed from the romanticism of a bygone era where a person could actually tell the truth and not risk ascension by being honest. It's not just the current political culture that is to blame but also the voting public, who more and more everyday, have allowed a process that does not seek to represent their best interests for the interests of a privileged few.

cibaeno,
you might want to read Plato's Gorgias. It explains everything you need to know. It's not that long and you can probably get a simplified version online that gives you an explanation. He goes on to explain that convincing people (like what has become of poltics today) is not truth or virtue. Just because you make people believe in you or accept you does not mean that you are right. His goal was always to seek truth with the application of virtue. So its not some guy off the street that reads philosophy that would be a philosopher king. there are serious criterias and by reading Gorgias you can tell why politicians aren't being moral by their deeds. There is a strict explanation of what it means to be virtuous and to be a politician it is the ultimate example of virtue (or is suppose to be because you are serving the people). anyway, read gorgias you will have fun.

Dominica, I've read Plato's writings and have been since I was a teen (I'm in my 30s now). I've always had trouble with his ideal society because it seemed (to me at least) to be very undemocratic and elitist, not to mentuion the fact that he was an early proponent of eugenics. Not a big fan.
