SAN JUAN. – The U.S. authorities in Monito Island, located between Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, rescued 12 Cubans taken there illegally by Dominican smugglers, the United States Border Patrol announced today.
It said a U.S. Department of the Interior park ranger notified Puerto Rico federal agents in Aguadilla (northwest), after sighting the group of Cubans on Tuesday.
In a statement the Border Patrol said the Cubans, 11 men and one woman, were in good health, and requested asylum based on the legislation known as "wet foot dry foot policy," via which Cubans who manage to step on United States mainland are allowed to remain in that country and obtain a residency after being there for one year.

Glad everyone is unhurt and alive.
This is one law, however, in need of revision, as it is premised on cold war thinking.

Yes, 38 miles versus 41 miles. But by right of possession Puerto Rico has claims over the island.

Dominicans cant take care of the island they got...they don't need another 38 miles away

When PR goes independent, I would recommend going to war over ownership of this island.

Devin,
Just trying to get under skin of some of my PRican relatives. We banter back & forth and I know they check the site ocassionally.
You know I am not being serious with above proposal, and just being facetious.
BTW, please check out forum thread on "Education in DR: its sad state and what to do about it".
Thanks.

dominicans can have wet foot dry foot too if they want, but don't forget a complete economic embargo comes with it. Still want it?
Personally I think the US should open it's borders to anyone from any country meeting the following criteria:
1. They mush be able to purchase a habitable home for cash money.
2. Entrance fee to the US. let's say $25,000 since that's seems to be the going rate for a coyote
3) 2 people per house for the first bedroom or studio, plus an additional person for each additional bedroom (Min. size requirements)
4) At least 50% of each household meets or exceeds the average IQ of the state that they which
to reside in. That'll smartin' up them Alabamians.
5) They speak English and agree to adopt English as their household language
Granted instant residency and if they don't commit a felony in 5 years they become naturalized US citizens.
Still Want to come? That's solves the US housing problem. Prices go back up, I move to DR

Shorty,
I agree.....my parents came to the U.S the legal way and are u.S Citizens. but remember....
1. We are at WAR and to think some mid-east terroist who by the way look Hispanic entering the border to commet murderous acts.
2. The drug killings is way out of control.
3. Kidnapping for ransom.
4. Cayotes charge double once in the U.S and keep at a safe house.
5. A real slap in the face for those already waiting LEGALLY, up to 10 years.
6. One must show proof of drivers Lic., Proof of Insurance and car registration pulled over fro violating traffic Laws.
7. In order to obtain a drivers Lic. one must show legal apers.
8. One under Fed. Laws one must have their green card at all times.
9. Once over 18 years of age one must carry I.D anyway.
10. Imagine those in jails and prisons at tax payers expense.
Those are just a few items....
It would be nice to see all those protesting...to protest the mass killings, teenage pregnacies...

High School drop out rate, gangs, drugs and anti-social behavour.
Obama is smart he'll wait before the 2012 election in order to do SOMETHING to rally latino votes, considering 72% of latino voters voted for him in 2008.
Fact is latino voters connected with Obama because.....His Father was an imigrante from Africa.
Funny after seeing all those American flags with a couple of those guys wearing CHE t-shirts makes me wonder about the last protest of prop. 187 in California where one saw a sea of Mexican flags !
MY EYES ARE FULL OPEN....
Take care.
