CAIRO.- Dominican open water swim champ Marcos Diaz, who’s goal is to link the five continents to promote war on poverty, will make an attempt to cross the Red Sea from June 9 to 11 and culminate the second leg of his ordeal.

Diaz, 35, said in Cairo today that although his swim was initially scheduled to link Asia and Africa from the coast of Yemen to the beaches of Djibouti, the possible presence of Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden forced a change in plans. “The pirates and the lack of security forced us to opt for crossing the Red Sea between Jordan and Egypt."

The Dominican athlete, who completed the first stage on May 13 crossing 19.5 kilometers in 4 hours, 18 minutes, from Papua New Guinea to Indonesia, visited United Nations programs in schools, hospitals and orphanages during his stay in both countries. “We had the opportunity to really live the needs and the great challenges of these two countries to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals.”

In the swim of the Red Sea, whose waters are home to a wide array of sharks, Diaz will count on the protection of a device which emits an electronic pulse to repel sharks. “Although there are no statistics of an attack on a swimmer, we don’t want to be the first," Diaz jested.

A well-intentioned, yet meaningless feat.

Other than instilling a sense of pride and recognition for Dominicans, this effort parallels those of our BELOVED president in Venezuela and Colombia, etc. What the heck is it doing for the material benefit of my country and people? Let's rather concentrate on what we could do to improve education, health care, infrastructure and our overall economic well-being, not to mention the necessary quantum jump on integrity. Then, when we have achieved a measurable and recognized level of meaningful economic development and our people are able to attain gainful employment, provide for their families, then maybe we could concentrate on these more meaningless feats-which are, in general, the province of those from 1-st world countries and the pompous.

Mr. Diaz, I shall remain proud of your athletic prowess and general accomplishments, nevertheless.

Thank you.

I sure hope his international visiter's Visa is updated, after all some of the Nations he'll be linking have some of the harshest immigration laws that make the AZ-1070 look like Mickey Mouse.
Forget the sharks worry more about the Somali Pirates.
Now that he's getting close to his goals.......he should turn-up a notch the needs of the DR's Children living in poverty.
Is it me or what ? has anybody ever noticed the non reports by the International sports media ?

Some people just never have anything positive to say around here... always trying to come up with something so "deep" or "smart" to say about the true solutions on the world's problems... what a bunch of clowns.

T,
In the end please tell us all whats to become of all this.......bringing attention ?.......solutions ?

Is your idea of doing something like bringing attention......the solution ? or saying something possitive........the solution ?

I don't know about you but I've seen with my own eyes the poverty in the DR.

Do we really a world attencion getter kind of guy to open our eyes to the reality that is ? maybe some but NOT ME !

Maybe the real problem lies with......as long as some one else brings attention we'll just stand on the side line and cheer, as an excuse to say see.....there's some one who cares He's bringing attencion to the problem THEN DO NOTHING.

Many use the excuse " Boy, If I had a million dollars" I'll really show'um.

The real million dollar questions, is.......What ever happened to leading by example ? I'm reminded of the old saying "Some have none and give all, Some have all but give nothing".

JOIN THE CIRCUS.....

This shameless, self-promoter would do more to end world hunger by opening up a Colmado in Bonao than the stunt he is doing now.

I do not get it. If he is that good he should be competing in the Olympic and show the rest of the world that you are the best of the best. Go ahead compete with somebody else and show us what are you made of.

Stop all this nonsense, compete, compete.

This is another episode of this guy with errors in the story and I personally doubt whether any news outlet knows anything about him ..In fact ,there are sharks in the Red Sea and they have attacked swimmers but as far as I know the pirates from Somali have not yet employed their gun boats to capture a swimmer and it is doubtful if they would set their sights on a Dominican to achieve a healthy ransom.
