Presidents Obama and Fernandez had met previously in a summit in Trinidad & Tobago.
Washington.- Presidents Leonel Fernandez and Barack Obama will hold a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office of the White House, Press secretary Robert Gibbs announced Sunday.
The U.S. and Dominican Republic leaders will be "discussing a wide range of bilateral and hemispheric issues as part of [an] ongoing engagement with leaders from throughout the Americas on the most important issues facing people throughout the region."
According to the White House spokesman, Obama and Fernandez plan a joint press conference in the Oval Office at 2:40 p.m.
Among the potential topics may discuss in the meeting is the flow of aid to Haiti, as Port-au-Prince announced on Saturday that it has accepted to incorporate Dominican Republic to the Interim Commission for Haiti’s Reconstruction (CIRH).
Also a bone of contention is the Caribbean nation’s efforts to fight the traffic of persons, which earned it the U.S. State Department’s “black list” status for countries which in Washington’s don’t do enough.
Another issue is the country’s war on drug trafficking, in which several local political leaders say Washington doesn’t provide enough support, given the U.S. as the final destination for most of the narcotics which enters Dominican territory.
In the Blair House
Fernandez and his wife Margarita Cedeño are staying since yesterday in the Blair House, located in front of the White House, as Barack and Michelle Obama’s guests of honor.

One of the unsolved bilateral difference between the USA and DR is the name of the island shared with Haiti, which also has a different name for it.
USA calls it "Island of Hispaniola"
Haiti's Constitution calls it "Island of Haiti"
DR's Constitution calls it "Island of Santo Domingo", as it is in every international treaty since 1506.
If Haiti honors the treaties, its Constitution should call the island "Santo Domingo", then, the USA would not have an alibi to call it Hispaniola. Spain never accepted Hispaniola ("Española") for obvious reasons. Once an agreement over the name of the island is reached to have only one legal name for it, "Island of Santo Domingo", then the DR can use its proper name of Quisqueya for the Nation and Quisqueyan for the People. It is now the time, as Juan Pablo Duarte would have said: -"Quisqueyans, the bells have already tolled to end centuries of grievances; he, who doesn't love God or his country, should cover himself with the blanket of death".

The key for many of our problems with the USA and Haiti derive in the lack of interest to solve an old historical fact: accepting the name of the island shared by Haiti and DR, "Island of Santo Domingo".
