Santo Domingo.- Dominican ultra distance swimmer Marcos Diaz will soon cross the Straits of Gibraltar, the third stage on an attempt to link the five continents by water as part of  to promote the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

After the first two successful swims across the channel between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia to link Australia and Asia, and later Asia with Africa crossing the Red Sea between Jordan and Egypt, Diaz will try to swim from Morocco across the Straits of Gibraltar to the Spanish city Tenerife.

The challenge aims "to attract people’s attention so that common individuals know about the topic of the Millennium Goals," the swimmer said today in a press conference in Rabat, where he affirmed that “if a person can swim from one country or from one continent to another, that shows that we aren’t so far apart."

Diaz, appointed UN Honorary Ambassador for this project, plans to swim from Africa to Europe from July 28 to August 10, since the exact date can’t be known because it depends on weather conditions.
