NEW YORK.- Dominican native Angel Alvarez,  23, is still alive despite being riddled with as many as 23 bullets of 46 rounds fired by five police agents who confronted him after he gunned down Luis Soto.

The authorities said the shootout occurred while 200 people were taking part in a barbecue in the squares formed by Lenox avenue between 143 and 144 streets

In the melee 32nd Precinct policemen Alfredo Vargas 28, and Michael Tedeschi, were wounded by several shots some by friendly fire of the agents who fired against Alvarez. Four civilians were also wounded.

Witnesses said the shooting was a "scene from Western films" in which "run for your lives prevailed."

Preliminary reports affirm that a brawl preceded the shooting, when 30 police officers arrived at the squares and told the partygoers to go home and disperse the area.

It was reported that the gathering was to honor a Harlem man nicknamed "Twizzy," who was gunned down in the Bronx last Thursday.

Excuse me, but what was he doing at a "bbq" in the middle of the night with 200 orders disrupting the peace. These "parties" need to stop and if that means that the NYPD has to open fire, well let it be it. This is the kind of occurrences that give dominicans a bad name in NYC. It's embarrassing to hear of stories like these one, and they happen all the time. What's the use of gathering in the middle of the street? Can someone explain me that? It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

Police are warning revellers they'll be cracking down on illegal barbecuing and drinking
Posters put up in northern Manhattan by police laid down the law on sidewalk barbecuing, public drinking and selling alcohol from unlicensed stores -
Although Sunday’s parade route goes up Sixth Avenue from 36th to 59th streets, and runs from 2 to 5 p.m., many people congregate in Upper Manhattan afterwards as the area is home to the largest population of Dominican people outside the Dominican Republic.
Pamela Palanque-North, Community Board 12 chair, said the police effort is intended to educate the community on acceptable practices during the event and avoid trouble.
Palanque-North said she didn't know of violent crimes related to the previous parades, but quality of life complaints like cars honking throughout the night and street congestion have been brought to the cops
“The police are taking a more proactive approach “Some of the community doesn’t know what is accepted behavior "

Here it is different ,,,when there is no electricity it is much cooler for people to sit together in the street , play some dominoes and have a few Presidente . outside many discos there are also many people taking the fresh air. Occasionally when the police get over officious , some shooting starts and some one dies if they do not heed the police ..but living outside ones home is a very Dominican thing .

There is that old saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans".
In other words, leave all your "ethnic standards" in the place you left and abide by the mores of the society in which you now reside.
Many immigrants fail to realize this advise and end up athwart the leagal system of the place they are in presently.
Each society is different and one should NOT EXPECT that societies acceptance of ones native mores, which are alien to others.
If that doesn't make sense, think in terms of YOUR acceptance of foreigners and their actions in relation to Dominican society.
Accept and obey the mores of the society you live in and you will get along fine.
Deny and oppose those mores and you will find yourself an outcast.

Holy cow!
Is the NYPD using standard pressure FMJ?
Ricochet? Overpenetration? Anyone? Anyone?
Aside from which, it would also explain their reputation for needing dozens of rounds to bring down a perp.
In 9x19mm, I roll with 147 gr. JHP at standard pressure, and +p for anything lighter than that.
I'd strongly recommend you do likewise.

What you say is correct, as far as you take it.
If the people who wish to migrte to another country would take the time and make the effort to. at least, try and understand the society they wish to place themselves in, then they would realize that the mores of the society they are leaving is alien to the one they hope to assimilate. In studying the society they are going to, they would realize those differences and would find it much easier to assimilate, don't you think?
We can rationalize all we want to, but in the final analysis it behooves us to accept that we are the ones under the microscope, being viewed askance and with suspicion as to whether or not we are acceptable in our new society.
Parents are the controlling factor within the faqmilial mileau andare the guides to the future. The imposition of simple discipline to the actions and the guidance of our childresn thoughts are the responsibility we can't ignore, though many do.

Right on the money. That applies to all people migrating to the USA who come around waving their flags and forcing the standards of living they are trying to supposedly leave behind. Assimilate, educate, respect, doesnt mean you have to forget who you are and where you come from.

As a Dominican I am embarrassed by people like this ,but just like another person posted here this is part of the US ghetto mentality and many Dominicans in the US copy the most backwards elements in the country instead of trying to progress. Most of these people listen to rap "music" and dress like hoodlums so why are people shocked when this happens....

It's bad enough to bring our own bad habits from DR ...it is much worse to adopt bad habits from the lower crust of US society!

cibaeno75;

If you would please re-read my post, you would find that what I was refering to applies to ALL PERSONS who imigrate to another country--NOT JUST DOMINICANS!~!!
If you can't derive that simple truth from my post, go back to school and learn to interpret the language you are reading in the context applied.
You have an unholy habit of reading what you want to into the posts on these pages and if you cn't see the error of your ways of interpreting simple statements, I suggest you "SILENTLY FOLD YOUR TENT AND STEAL AWAY INTO THE NIGHT"!!!
Now, if that shoe doesn't fit, o r if it pinches, try a different size. Maybe then you'll be more comfortable.
You are "rationalizing the truth away" and "can't see the forest for the trees".
If my statements are offensive to you, then you might re-read yours to me and decide if I am justified or not.
People who avoid the truth of a matter with rationalized excuses, only dilude themselves and no-one else.

Angel Alvarez got into a fight with Luis Soto who had a gun in his belt. The gun fell out while Alvarez was whupping his azz and Alvarez picked it up, cops saw the gun and went crazy firing 40 times, hitting Alvarez 23 times, each other and (stray bullet) killing Soto who was laying there helpless from the azz whupping he took. Then the cops tried to lie about what happened.

NYPD is a pack of rabid dogs. This story is proof.

Don't miss the point

It shouldn't be open season on Dominicans or anyone else in NYC or Santo Domingo or anywhere else. I don't care whether they're college students or drug dealers.

They have the right to due process of law like everyone else.

I can't believe some of you people. Take the time to find the truth before manking your mind up that these kids deserved to be executed in the streets of Harlem by the NYPD.

cibeano75;

You may think you are calling a "spade a spade", but in reality your paranoia and defensiveness is causing you to ignore the obvious.
FYI, my initial statement is based on generalization and was/is not intentionally directed at any particular ethnic group.
In fact, the statement could well describe Americans who immigrate to other lands.
You seem to haqve a "hard on" for Americans in particular, judging from your posts in the past on subjects and posts dealing with that ethnic (?) group.
Is that your problem, or do you just always jump to conclusions of your own making?
I would suggest the latter.
As to a "spade being a spade", you seem to have a tendency to call them a "bloody shovel". Does it make you feel better?

No,cibneo75, I don't staqnd on "righteous indignation" in the least, nor resort to "thinly veiled attacks afterwards", as you have put it. I resort to aqn outright attack against stupidity, fallacious reasoning, misquoted allegations, and generally say it like it is.
Neither do I "get my kicks" out of debating with ignorant synchophants (note the misspelled words, also, you young whippersnapper), both today and in my days of "being a man", nor do I seek, from one such as you, any accolades as to my commentaries, since you have proven that you only have the ability to assume an attitude of superiority and condesention to those whom you would like 'to put in their place".
Since I am well aware of what my place is, and I do not consider you to be other than one who has his nose in the air in deqaling with others, I'll just leave you to look in the mirror and admire yourself over your disillushionments.

The shooting took place in harlem with mostly a black neiborhood followed by the heights which is where the the dominican community reside, the police dont bother to ask questions in these parts of nyc, they shoot.
