A Dominican survivor confirms at least 20 dead, 2nd paragraph

Santo Domingo.- As many as 20 Haitians died in an accident of the truck on which they traveled from the Dominican Republic border town Dajabón, where they  took part in the binational market, local media report..

The Dominican Daniel Valdez, who works for a local company contracted to build th road to link the Haitian towns Ouanaminthe with Cap-Haitien, told Efe that he was able to count "at least 20 bodies" in the site of the accident.

Neither the Dominican nor Haitian authorities have confirmed the report.

Some of the injured attended in a Dominican Republic hospital said the truck flipped in the section Tierra Roja, on the Ouanaminthe-Limonade-Cap-Haitien road , in Haiti’s northeast, around 35 kilometers from the border.

The accident occurred when the driver tried to evade a motorist who crossed the road, according to Yolanda Fersul, one of the injured taken to the hospital at Dajabón, where Haitian vice consul Yonat Jean went to find out about the tragedy.

Some of those injured were taken to regional Cabral & Báez hospital, in the city Santiago.

God save their soul.

It's a shame that because of one motorist, 20 die. It may be cruel to say it, but if the truck driver would have hit that one motorist, then other people would have been ok. The thing is, I am almost positive that the motorist probably came out of nowhere as they so accustom to in the DR.

I drove behind a truck that had plastic chairs like 20 feet high and haitians were sitting on top with no seat belt! Any fast movements by the truck and they would all be gone... This truck might have been speeding like most trucks in DR do, and you can blame the driver too for having people in the back with no seat belts...

I am always shocked when I see children in the back of pick up trucks in DR... AMET needs to stop everyone that has people in the back with no seats!

Hispaniola, nice picture but dumm remark respecting voodoo. You mean if they were worshiping to your god the accident would not happen? not really smart

These things happen because there is no control through AMET. They watch people get transported in a truck like animals and just don't care. AMET is also watching everyday motoconchos carrying a whole family and their belongings. AMET would stop you if you don't put your belt on or use your Cel but they don't care if a truck which is not for human transportation violates the most basic security measures. These kind of accidents are only responsibility of AMET and no one else. These people don't have the education to live safe, we can't blame them for that.

God (which ever) save their soul

WTF is wrong with some of these God Pimps?

It's a sad and tragic accident and that's all it is.

I don't understand some of the comments here. How does AMET get into the picture? Didn't this happen 35 miles inside Haiti? Do we know the nationality of the driver? Was the truck registered in the D.R., or in Haiti? Was the motorist who crossed the road a Dominican? Do all Haitians who travel to and from the D.R. use Dominican transportation, or do these Haitians arrive in vehicles that are safe and equipped with enough seat belts for everyone and then are loaded like cattle in unsafe vehicles for their return trip?

there was a time in his life in which Einstein pondered the issue regarding the possibility of infinite human stupidity. had he met hispaniola, his equivocations would have been erased.

Ateo2010,

Tell me who your friends are and i will tell you who you are. Agree? or not?

By the way, there is an old saying......"Birds of a feather flock together." I would say that it is parially true.

yumnuk, i once thought that ateo had potential to be a sane human being. his recent forays into the realms of insanity have reversed my thinking. anyone who commiserates with extreme fools like hispaniola needs to be regarded as a person of limited intellectual firepower. i am sorely disappointed..

Dread, i think Ateo's essential beliefs were formed early in life and will probably change little over time. If age brings wisdom -and it does not always do so- he should at least become more tolerant of the differences between us as human beings, be they racial, sexual, ethnic, linguistic or whatever else. As Aristotle pointed out, such things are accidental, while our common humanity is essential.
