Cartagena's history is famous as a Caribbean pirate refuge. Perhaps it is re-living it's history today?

I just wish he would "meddle" in our affairs half as much as he meddles in the affairs of others.

DR has a rightful place to encourage peace and dialogue no matter which government is in power. ... DR stood up for the jews in WW2 and have role to play even now on the world stage. .. vague or not it may appear but it is a noble pursuit for any country and optimism is not to be mocked

FedericoD,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Dominican Republic sat on the fence in WW2 and Trujillo was a big fan of Hitler, and like Hitler, an anti-Semitic Roman Catholic.
What kind of role on the world stage did you have in mind for this failing state?

During World War 2 the Dominic Republic did declare war on Germany and Japan after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and after Germany declared war on the United States. They were not able to send troops, aircraft or ships however. So they were allied with the Allies in rhetoric only? Sounds familiar?

Looks like I was wrong about Truilljo's antisemitism - FedericoD, I stand corrected:
"In 1938, when no other nation would welcome Jewish refugees, Rafael Trujillo, the Dominican Republic strongman, offered to take in 100,000. Between 1940 and 1945, 5,000 Dominican visas were issued, but only 645 Jews actually made their way to the Dominican Republic. The refugees settled in the tiny seacoast town of Sosua, then just jungle land, that Trujillo had established with funding provided by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee"

Roy ... the DR contradiction is worthy of note ... here was a country offering itself up as a place of refuge and yet sadly during a period of intense hatred toward Haitian people sharing the same island ...
