The photo reminds me of how many high-rise buildings are built in the capital.... I guess many builders have not heard of I - beams, girders, and rivets. So many blocks and so much cement... but not so much steel. They are built like normal houses, just piled on top of one another- with just a little rebar in them to bind the cement and bind them together. I feel sorry for the people living in them, as these buildings can all come tumbling down like toy blocks in an earthquake.

with just a little rebar in them to bind the cement and bind them together= It still will not bind. Cement needs to be kept 90% moist for a week to cure. Here they pour and than walk. Just look at the cracks in these buildings. and the Metro was buit the same way. Just look at the Autopista. Holes, cracks everywhere.

Do a little research. Cuba may not be the bast place to live when it comes to having freedom, but this is the "human development index" in other words. Quality of life such as: How long do people live (Cuba is one of the highest because of their medical system), literacy rate (one again Cuba is one of the highest in the world). No, you cannot speak out against the government and your chances of making it rich are small then in other places, but when it comes to the things that are actually measured for this survey they are actually in great shape. So yes, freedom is low... but last I checked that's not something that is measured on these surveys.

Mcruz is absolutely right.
Cuba doesn't have much in the way of freedom--in fact it sucks! but, for those who have been there and spent time there, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how much better their education system is and their literacy rate is one of the highest in the world. in fact, compared to most of south america, it's thru the roof high literacy! and everyone gets free health care. Yes, Everyone! and dropping out of school is illegal in Cuba!
Yeah, the political system absolutely sucks, and it's nearly impossible to get rich their no matter how bright you are but, you cannot deny their education and medical system as being one of the best.
PS. I've only been there a couple of times, 1998, 2000, so maybe things have changed a lot since i was last there.

Hahahahahaha..... How can Dominicans spend time thinking about education when they are busy wondering how to become millionaires of some how or sort? Pun intended! Yes, but very true at the same time. It is preposterous when commonly a conversation of any etiology among Dominican fiends ends up rather sooner in discussion of X many dollars equal X many thousands or millions or who has this or that much or the best car somewhere town in Dominican. It seems that there is nothing else to talk about. So even with little facts at hands it appears that Education or other subjects are totally unimportant for the common Dominican encountered on daily basis. And of course, THE CULPRIT government that does little to nothing to control the situation. Oh well, Dominican is in a free fall in a abyss. Its officials are aware. But who cares? Dominican is a fat COW being milked the hell with the COW. Let's keep running it further into the abyss. Dominican The most EXPENSIVE place in the CARIBBEAN.

The UN is an example of a multi-leveled latrine. It's a joke! The folks that run it are the has-beens of their own country because their sorry ideas have failed at that level. China gets really high marks as their environment is so clean, or is it low unemployment (for those under 10 years of age), or perhaps it's their fantastic maternity care (for the first child). As far as the perfect scandinavian life styles go, their success in civilization is from practically being isolated from each other, Ja, let the guv deal with them. They really don't like each other. Remember, the UN has done such a fantastic job in Haiti, importing a special Nepalese-an cholera in the process.

Crime so high fear has many trapped in their neighborhoods. Transportation impossible. Police corrupt that routinely stop and demand 100 - 300 pesos from the impoverished. A justice system that supports this behavior. A President who is now a multi-millionare and no one knows where the money came from. Drugs cheaper than rice. Combustibles so high even pasola owners try to economize.

To Carmen Reyes and MCruz: I see the two going at it. This is good. Let's just turn all this energy and brain power into a productive mean. It is not us the individuals out here who should be going at each others necks. Why not canalize crerative thingking and bring awareness to the people. COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION. Educating the people, increasing awareness is a better pathway to counter those dragging Dominican Republic further into the abyss. Yes indeed, Abuse galore! Nevertheless, the people have been conditioned to a subservant type of life which has turned into a norm anymore. Let's maken aware and provide them with means to break themselves out of this horror. I am SICK AND TIRED of seems Dominicans within and without living like sombies chasing a mirrage before their faces The United States. So where is the so called pride? When speaking of freedom we must remembeer that freedom is not just the ability of walking the streets at 2:00 AM without phisical harm. It is equally the ability to self determination including financial safety and security. Not the ability to produce a few pesos $$ to affort a bottle of rum or a Presidente but the ability of securing employment to affort bread and butter and rice and plantains and of course to hold the roof over the head for one and loved ones. Poverty, Squalar...I'm sorry, that's not the Cuba i saw. in fact, far from it. i didn't see any poverty and squalr when i was there (i was there twice.) in fact, just the opposite. everyone i met had adequate amounts of provisions and food, but nothing special, but again, nothing to rave about--but enough to get by. It was certainly more than the poor have here in this country. The lack of freedom in cuba and the inability to criticise it makes it bad but, the ability to criticise the government here has done nothing, accomplishes nothing, and proves nothing.
Great, we can criticise Leonel! How far has that got us? what has that accomplished? At least in Cuba, they have a fantastic education system where education is mandatory, and the health care is free for everyone. Yes, everyone!.

Well I do agree with a few of the comments and points that have addressed here. Cuba's freedoms suck and no one will ever become rich there by no means no matter how educated they are or how good of a medical system they have. The lowest illiteracy in Latin America. Some of the best Dominican doctors earned their medical degrees in Cuba but just like some one stated on here what can be done if all people can do is complain and or criticise. Just like the quote from Gandhi if you want change you are going to have to change yourself first and do something about it. How many Dominicans who have been able to escape the poverty, crime, corruption of the common Dominican citizen returns to the country with an education to make a difference. Not too many and if they do they come back to participate in the same corrupt system to do some exploitation of their own. Like the saying goes you can lead a horse to water now if he drinks it is another story.
